This is Sara Jane Ho, expert of etiquette and founder of the Institute Sarita finishing school.
Etiquette combines charm and integrity. Knowing what to do in any situation gracefully is one of the most empowering things for a person: it means feeling capable and confident around other people. I grew up in China with my mother throwing dinners and parties at home; now I do the same. I like to create magic moments through entertaining, putting guests at ease.
As I travelled and immersed myself in different cultures, I discovered that people all over the world want to have a sense of belonging. I was a student at Harvard Business School and thinking about what I wanted to do in life, when it hit me: I had lost my mother to cancer, but I could keep her legacy alive by sharing the joy and love that she brought to others through entertaining. I took a leap of faith and opened the first finishing school for ladies in China in 2012. Today that leap of faith has grown into several thriving ventures.
As China opens its doors to the world, I want to continue elevating women and give them the tools to feel confident in any situation. This passion of mine has evolved into a business I want to continue nourishing and sharing with people around the world.

There are so many similarities I am seeing in African and Asian culture. Hard to explain a short paragraph but in speaking with Asian friends and watching this, there’s a lot we have in common. Short explanation: pressure to be a doctor or lawyer, filial piety, etc.

As someone with lifelong severe depression, I thank my lucky stars I grew up in a family that doesn't look down on me, that my personal struggles aren't considered a blight on my family's reputation, where I'm not kicked to the curb for the sake of appearances. I mean, it's not enough for your own mind telling you you're worthless, now your entire family is telling you you're worthless.

I think it makes sense why asians are practical. That generational trauma will definetly effected your parents and relatives. The anxiety of poverty and famine is carried on. I think with other culture besides asians who has grand parents or parents experienced war, instability in their own country will have similar upbringing.

I'm so sorry about your mom's passing away so early. Thank you again for this great video. I'm African-American and I would eat the pig knuckle soup. I think that we have a similar dish. We have pig's feet (yummy!!!) and I think it's popular in your culture, too isn't it?

Both episodes are accurate. We grew up modest but life quality evolved gradually after being entrepreneurs and the change around us (especially friends and people's behavior) was very noticeable. Fortunately, there was more good than bad.

I love your perspectives! I’m curious how you handle politics with etiquette. Like do political opinions signal manners just as much as how you treat others?

Oh yes, again non western people thinking western parents are all easy on their kids. My native american friends think this too. Not all our parents got the memo. German American parenting, for instance, can be very harsh in some, they still raise us like its the great depression, you are cared about if you can accomplish things, not for who you are. you have to keep your art and emotions to yourself, as a child in that environment. I have read a lot about the cultural revolution in China and I'm sure it caused a lot of scars, what a horrific thing. Good videos, thanks! Im not sure why i watched this show but im enjoying your take.
