Gday Steve, I’ve recently brought the Dremel 3000, I’m impressed with it but it does lack in the power/torque department, if I’m polishing with it I have to be careful to keep the same pressure at all times so I keep a even finish due to the lack of torque, it does struggle in quite a few things I’ve used it for, I wish knew about the one you have before hand, after seeing you demonstrate yours I would have got the same, then again I still might talk the wife into opening the purse strings once again with a little sweet talking, only time will tell, Thanks mate for a great honest review it’s much appreciated, Cheers Matty

This comment section is quite a cross-section...you’ve got Foredom employees leaving comments about how bad this tool is and how in 2020 you may not receive the item in the mail because “China”. Then you’ve got people knocking it for being bad and then admitting to rebuying it after it breaks. Then the icing on the cake is the updated comment telling us you never knew it was a fake even though it was 1/3 the price of the original. And that we shouldn’t buy this based on principle. Then, drum roll please, you tell us it’s a great value for those who can’t afford the original. Holy shi t. Make up your minds.

If the original Foredoms are as good as their reputation, then starting in the jewellery or engineering trade buy an original American Foredom. Why? They were over-engineered and have reliable and long lasting motors. Time is money in the jewellery trade so having reliable ones that can stand 40 hours+ a week use is essential. Ones from the 1970s are still in circulation and can be bought fairly cheaply, at least in the US. At most you'll have to replace the carbon bushes. For everyone else - occasional users and hobbyists - a Chinese knock-off may be more cost-effective as the price difference is huge at 2/rds less than the equivalent original. What I do note is that the Chinese Foredoms have poor foot pedals. That's where the cost cutting is very apparent. If speed control is important, the Chinese ones will not suit. However, as an aside, I do note that the Chinese Die Cutters on Amazon may be a better option for occasional users as they are cheaper still. No foot pedal, but come with a flex shaft and are claimed to run at speeds between 8000 and 30000 rpm. They can take from between 2.3mm and 6mm bits. Downsides? Flexibility. They don't use the Foredom style handpiece, so one is limited to the type sold with them but, these do everything but carving. At under 50 GBP, they are good value, and avoid any moral questions. Take your pick. Not everyone has over 300 GBP to drop on an original Foredom sadly.

I had one delivered from China yesterday after a 2 1/2 month wait. It would not turn on its own power. I took the flex shaft off to rotate manually and found that it was hanging up internally. Took it apart and found where the armature was contacting the stator and hanging up. After filing that area down it ran smoothly. Next I filed and sanded the bail handle hanger which had horrible burs all around both sides. The control pedal is basically on/off but feels like it should regulate. I'll change that out. The flex had what may have been a little graphite or just grime from production I lubed it with lithium grease. I've bought a lot of tools and parts from China, some I'm pleased with, some that needed some help like this. For the price I can't complain TOO much and think it may serve well now.

When I was a jeweler, we had to change the bits quite often. the one slot to insert the chuck key gets annoying. We would take a jeweler's saw and cut back the aluminum shield from the chuck so the key can be put in at any position. Also we would get a chuck key without the plastic handle. Since the motor is often hung, we would tape the wings of the key to the power cord hanging down so you never have to hunt for the chuck key.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:- PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE TOOLS ARE COPIES OF THE RENOWNED FOREDOM USA TOOL AND ARE ACTUALLY MADE IN CHINA. I NEVER KNEW THAT AT THE TIME OF MAKING THIS VIDEO. DO NOT BUY THIS TOOL IF YOU WANT A GENUINE USA FOREDOM, WHICH ARE CONSIDERABLY MORE EXPENSIVE TO BUY. HAVING SAID THAT THOUGH, I AM REALLY PLEASED WITH THIS COPY. IT IS REALLY WELL MADE AND RUNS REALLY SMOOTH. I THINK IT'S THE BEST ROTARY TOOL AVAILABLE IF ONE CANNOT AFFORD A USA MADE FOREDOM.

Does the foot pedal have good sensitivity ? And can it cut wet ? I need a flexshaft grinder and am broke as joke until I can get some things made...and some Rubyvale sapphire rough, skin polished.

I agree that if it's not a genuine Foredom, it should not be advertised and labelled as such. Let it be Chinese designed and branded and sink or swim on its own merits. Please check that the in-line connector plug between the foot pedal and motor is the shielded type IEC C14 or similar. The connectors on mine are unshielded, leaving potentially live contact pins exposed if the plugs become partially separated during use. The 3-pin mains plug also appears not to be fused. I believe the unshielded inline connecters are for a DC motor version, but have been used with an AC motor. Post Brexit, I'm hoping the UK can have more amicable trade arrangements with the US, so we can purchase quality, genuine US products at more affordable prices. Chinese competition is fine, but please, no copying and potentially dangerous goods to the market.

For sure it's a Chinese counterfeit if it's on Banggood for eighty quid. The problem with these is the risk of malfunction with no warranty or support. @SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 5 жыл бұрын
Hi It is a Chinese product. They sell them on many sites though even on eBay so I presume the company don't mind for one reason or another? eBay would be the first to remove such listings if it contradicted any law. It's the same with Mitutoyo Calipers. You can buy copies dead cheap on eBay and they are never removed from the site. eBay is very strict on this sort of thing, so I do not know why they allow it. I'm really pleased with mine. If I had the spare finance I would have bought a genuine one, because then it keeps it's value if one re-sells such things. If I sold this one I would have to specify it was a copy. Regards Steve

Steve Jordan thanks for clarifying. I guess there are two issues: (1) is the tool any good? - sounds like it is (2) is it ok to write Foredom’s US address all over a product (presumably for warranty) that Foredom made no money on. I have absolutely no problem with quality chinese products but I was slightly thrown that you made such an effort to describe the logo’s, addresses and brand when it apparently isn’t a Foredom.... unless these ARE Foredom (grey) imports manufactured for Foredom in China then the point of the brand/logo is lost on me though I *was* very interested in your hands on experience of the tool itself. Hope this doesn’t comes off as a rant but you mystified me there for a while - great review though - thanks :)

Called Foredom, told me that getting it repaired would cost more than a new one. So they sent me a switch. Holy smokes! Trying to remove and re-solder that switch is pretty much impossible for a mere mortal like me. So do NOT yammer to me about "warranties" and "made in the USA" ad nauseam. @@Steve_Just_Steve Seems like a knockoff to me. Foredom's own website warns of counterfeit products and even gives a serial number that's often used (ma068899). In any case, it's extremely unlikely that a tool that retails for £250 could suddenly be available at what's obviously less than trade price. It's nice to think it might happen, but out in the real world it just doesn't make any sense. Now, I don't mind Chinese tools, I don't even mind Chinese tools that are clearly budget copies of superior products - provided that they're clear about who made them and where they come from. They might be good value for money for people who can't afford or don't need the real thing, and there's a place for that in the market. Like many others, I have cheapo chuckaway copy verniers for quick and dirty work - but when I need to be sure of a dimension I dig out the Mitutoyo. When it moves into making counterfeits, that's another issue entirely - and it's fraud. I'm pretty sure that everyone who watches this and similar channels knows the value and integrity of well-made tools, and it would do us all well to remember that it's people like us who make such tools. They deserve our respect, as much as that Moore & Wright micrometer that you had to scrimp and save for, or that set of Starrett gauge blocks you bought instead of a taking a holiday.

Sergey Karpushev, This is absolutely NOT an authentic Foredom tool made in the USA. It's a complete counterfeit Chinese knockoff. I don't know why Mr.Jordan is misleading people about this.

How are they different from the real thing in their operation? I own 2 of these (SR models) and a US Foredom SR. In what way is the US model better, aside from its pedal?

If you use this tool in your trade, I'd avoid these counterfeit tools... you get what you pay for.

I got one, and the quality is impressive.. Very solid, smooth, the shaft and the pieces are not even hot after hours not even the motor itself... Anyone can tell me how much is a "real" one,??? I got mine from Amazon for 109$ I know a guy that uses this one 👆 8hours every day for almost 2 years and still like the day one , that's the point that decided me

Can the chick actually fit a 1/4 bit ?

The 6mm, which is actually 6.5mm, handpiece does fit round 1/4" shanks. In fact, I'm using a 1/4" shank 2" wire wheel right now. It is a tight fit, as 1/4" is 6.4mm, IIRC. Works very well.

I saw these Chinese counterfeits on EBay today whilst shopping for a flex shaft...was very tempted until I saw to terrible reviews.

Hi Kathy, Well I'm really pleased with mine. Its is actually the best rotary tool I have owned an used. The quality is outstanding to say the least! Its like with many tools now, who knows where the parts are made? I know this one is made in China, but how do we know whether the genuine ones all have parts made in their home countries. Most manufacturers sub out their work to have parts made in China now. I did see some bad reviews but I'm so pleased it didn't put me off. It has saved me spending three times the price and I have a super high quality tool. It is absolutely fantastic.

It's bad enough they copied the American product but they stole the name and the model as well? I don't care if it works or not. I won't buy it based on that. I'd rather have a real one (I have a real one and it's great) or one of the other manufacturers which don't steal the name. I have the Harbor freight one and it is nearly worthless. No torque at all. Barely good enough for light sanding. There is a dremel pendant motor that is 200 bucks an I have yet to try that yet but the reviews seem good. There are lots of other reasonable tools out there so I will never buy from someone who steals a name and model.

Yes, but very good, though. They seem to sell them on all different sites, but everyone knows they are not genuine ones by the price.

Please buy the original genuine part. If you can't afford it, then buy a Dremel.

I'm glad you both had better experiences, but I still advocate for supporting the company whose design the Chinese STOLE, and the piece of mind that comes with it. I wouldn't recommend, as stated above, but don't take this comment to heart, I do really hope your motors do not give out, and bring you many hours of creative application. But I still think people should just buy foredom. I'm waiting for my SR now, and will probably do a side by side review.

@@justinsane332 I understand your point of view, jewelry is (for the moment à hobby) I'm building my little workshop and each cent can be saved. I plan to grow, and of course I will buy real authentic stuff. But I have to say that I went from a dremel to this 👆 and it night/day difference...
