Gday Steve, I’ve recently brought the Dremel 3000, I’m impressed with it but it does lack in the power/torque department, if I’m polishing with it I have to be careful to keep the same pressure at all times so I keep a even finish due to the lack of torque, it does struggle in quite a few things I’ve used it for, I wish knew about the one you have before hand, after seeing you demonstrate yours I would have got the same, then again I still might talk the wife into opening the purse strings once again with a little sweet talking, only time will tell, Thanks mate for a great honest review it’s much appreciated, Cheers Matty

This comment section is quite a cross-section...you’ve got Foredom employees leaving comments about how bad this tool is and how in 2020 you may not receive the item in the mail because “China”. Then you’ve got people knocking it for being bad and then admitting to rebuying it after it breaks. Then the icing on the cake is the updated comment telling us you never knew it was a fake even though it was 1/3 the price of the original. And that we shouldn’t buy this based on principle. Then, drum roll please, you tell us it’s a great value for those who can’t afford the original. Holy shi t. Make up your minds.

If the original Foredoms are as good as their reputation, then starting in the jewellery or engineering trade buy an original American Foredom. Why? They were over-engineered and have reliable and long lasting motors. Time is money in the jewellery trade so having reliable ones that can stand 40 hours+ a week use is essential. Ones from the 1970s are still in circulation and can be bought fairly cheaply, at least in the US. At most you'll have to replace the carbon bushes. For everyone else - occasional users and hobbyists - a Chinese knock-off may be more cost-effective as the price difference is huge at 2/rds less than the equivalent original. What I do note is that the Chinese Foredoms have poor foot pedals. That's where the cost cutting is very apparent. If speed control is important, the Chinese ones will not suit. However, as an aside, I do note that the Chinese Die Cutters on Amazon may be a better option for occasional users as they are cheaper still. No foot pedal, but come with a flex shaft and are claimed to run at speeds between 8000 and 30000 rpm. They can take from between 2.3mm and 6mm bits. Downsides? Flexibility. They don't use the Foredom style handpiece, so one is limited to the type sold with them but, these do everything but carving. At under 50 GBP, they are good value, and avoid any moral questions. Take your pick. Not everyone has over 300 GBP to drop on an original Foredom sadly.
@morganlewis26674 жыл бұрын
I had one delivered from China yesterday after a 2 1/2 month wait. It would not turn on its own power. I took the flex shaft off to rotate manually and found that it was hanging up internally. Took it apart and found where the armature was contacting the stator and hanging up. After filing that area down it ran smoothly. Next I filed and sanded the bail handle hanger which had horrible burs all around both sides. The control pedal is basically on/off but feels like it should regulate. I'll change that out. The flex had what may have been a little graphite or just grime from production I lubed it with lithium grease. I've bought a lot of tools and parts from China, some I'm pleased with, some that needed some help like this. For the price I can't complain TOO much and think it may serve well now.
@clockguy25 жыл бұрын
When I was a jeweler, we had to change the bits quite often. the one slot to insert the chuck key gets annoying. We would take a jeweler's saw and cut back the aluminum shield from the chuck so the key can be put in at any position. Also we would get a chuck key without the plastic handle. Since the motor is often hung, we would tape the wings of the key to the power cord hanging down so you never have to hunt for the chuck key.

@DavidGellPainter5 жыл бұрын
I agree that if it's not a genuine Foredom, it should not be advertised and labelled as such. Let it be Chinese designed and branded and sink or swim on its own merits. Please check that the in-line connector plug between the foot pedal and motor is the shielded type IEC C14 or similar. The connectors on mine are unshielded, leaving potentially live contact pins exposed if the plugs become partially separated during use. The 3-pin mains plug also appears not to be fused. I believe the unshielded inline connecters are for a DC motor version, but have been used with an AC motor. Post Brexit, I'm hoping the UK can have more amicable trade arrangements with the US, so we can purchase quality, genuine US products at more affordable prices. Chinese competition is fine, but please, no copying and potentially dangerous goods to the market.

Hi It is a Chinese product. They sell them on many sites though even on eBay so I presume the company don't mind for one reason or another? eBay would be the first to remove such listings if it contradicted any law. It's the same with Mitutoyo Calipers. You can buy copies dead cheap on eBay and they are never removed from the site. eBay is very strict on this sort of thing, so I do not know why they allow it. I'm really pleased with mine. If I had the spare finance I would have bought a genuine one, because then it keeps it's value if one re-sells such things. If I sold this one I would have to specify it was a copy. Regards Steve

Steve Jordan thanks for clarifying. I guess there are two issues: (1) is the tool any good? - sounds like it is (2) is it ok to write Foredom’s US address all over a product (presumably for warranty) that Foredom made no money on. I have absolutely no problem with quality chinese products but I was slightly thrown that you made such an effort to describe the logo’s, addresses and brand when it apparently isn’t a Foredom.... unless these ARE Foredom (grey) imports manufactured for Foredom in China then the point of the brand/logo is lost on me though I *was* very interested in your hands on experience of the tool itself. Hope this doesn’t comes off as a rant but you mystified me there for a while - great review though - thanks :)

@@Steve_Just_Steve Seems like a knockoff to me. Foredom's own website warns of counterfeit products and even gives a serial number that's often used (ma068899). In any case, it's extremely unlikely that a tool that retails for £250 could suddenly be available at what's obviously less than trade price. It's nice to think it might happen, but out in the real world it just doesn't make any sense. Now, I don't mind Chinese tools, I don't even mind Chinese tools that are clearly budget copies of superior products - provided that they're clear about who made them and where they come from. They might be good value for money for people who can't afford or don't need the real thing, and there's a place for that in the market. Like many others, I have cheapo chuckaway copy verniers for quick and dirty work - but when I need to be sure of a dimension I dig out the Mitutoyo. When it moves into making counterfeits, that's another issue entirely - and it's fraud. I'm pretty sure that everyone who watches this and similar channels knows the value and integrity of well-made tools, and it would do us all well to remember that it's people like us who make such tools.
