The instrument is a type of traditional Chinese instrument called a Ruan. They come in different varieties that determine their tuning and range. This one in the video is a Da Ruan. It's the equivalent of a 'bass' Ruan.

This guitarist is amazing! I would bet that any instrument she plays will sound fabulous...I would also like to know what this instrument is called and where it comes from, it sounds incredible, in the right hands.

It's one of the instruments from the 'Ruan' series. This is the Da Ruan. 'Da' meaning big in mandarin. It plays the role of cello-bass in an orchestra. I especially loved its good resonance and bass.

Get a load of that alternate picking with the pulloffs done with the left hand on open strings. I'm going to use this in my guitar stuff! Thanks for the beautiful music. She's wonderful!

That's absolutely true for people who wish to speak Putonghua with accurate pronunciation. I intended "roo-an' as a guide for foreigners whose onlt wish is to get somewhere in the same ball-park as a Beijinger. May I ask whether you're the PC Lai who plays guqin and used to be in touch with Julian Joseph?

Bravo, Nice Performance! In a case of a DaRuan; Is it possible to drop the lower string to G to have a DADG bass type tuning?

@Junya11031986 I agree. Neither deaf, nor stupid. It's just someone with different taste in music. There are even people who don't like gagaku.

It's a Ruan (pronounced roo-an, with a short roo). They come in three sizes, S, M and L; this is an L.

Very cool. I wonder if it originates from around the border area of Russia and China?

This Chinese instrument sounds like, look like and play like the Western guitar. I guess this one is a Large size ruan, so Google the word 大阮 should get you more info.

sounds cool- maybe it should have a couture so she doens't have to balance it on her leg. maybe modern ones do.

@cplai15 жыл бұрын
Ruan 阮 should not be pronounced as roo-an. It should be pronounced according to Mandarin pinyin rules.
