Chinese HO Steam Locomotive Clone - Worst Knock Off?

I was browsing eBay a couple months ago when I found this 0-4-0 ho scale steam locomotive for sale. I was a bit surprised as this model looked cosmetically identical to a HO locomotive Model Power produced many decades ago.
Today I decided to unbox and compare this model to the original and the results were mixed. It ran fine out of the box however there was a lot of loose parts in the drive train which caused it to make some unusual noises.
It's hard to say weather or not they bought the original tooling or just cloned it but ether way I'm thrilled to see a vintage model in production again.

Model Power locomotives and rolling stock were manufactured in China. Whenever a US manufacturer contracts with a Chinese Co. the Chinese Government actually owns the casting molds. This model was manufactured from the molds Model Power contracted to have their models made from. Not surprising, keep watching, I have a feeling there may be more old Model Power models appearing. N scale locomotives sold by Model Power were manufactured by Mini Trix, I don’t know that much about the rolling stock but if memory serves, these were manufacture in China. I would say a majority of model trains now are manufactured in China. Brands like Lionel, Athern Roundhouse (both owned by Horizion Hobbies) are now manufactured in China, Bachmann has been manufacturing there for years.

I've heard similar things before. I would have guessed that Lionel had their hands on the tooling but maybe now that they quit making HO products (again) they decided to dump the tooling and smaller companies are picking up the pieces. I hope to see more models like this one, I just which they would do something different from every other manufacturer and make them affordably. They have a real opportunity to undercut the market on price like Proto once did.

It looks like they have in fact come out with three North Americal-style locomotives...the 0-4-0 steamer, the cheap-and-cheesy Athearn Hustler knockoff, and the ubiquitous MDT that was done by AHM, Model Power, IHC, etc. It also appears that they are doing train sets, but the price on those is around $150.00 USD.

They also have the tooling for Tyco's extended vision caboose, a clone of bachmann's 40ft wood reefer, 53ft gondola, animated stock car without the animation, and semi trailer. They also a flatcar tooling, 53ft well car, 2-bay covered hopper, and some European rolling stock I don't know the origins of. I have the MP version of that... Well i actually had two that came with my layout, the tank version and the tender version. One of them was stripped down for spares as the chassis suffered mazak rot. The tank version did have the red LED, but not the tendered one. From what i can see, this looks like it runs more or less the same... Which is not bad for what it is. Theyre not a particularly realistic or high-end loco by any standard, however they are fun, and im honestly surprised by the pulling power they have. I can run mine (i put tue side-tank body onto the working tender chassis) with about 6-8 small Triang 4-wheeled wagons in tow and pull up a decent grade with it. I basically just painted over the corny Southern decalling and the blinding silver smokebox in matt black, blacked the rods etc a little and have it around as a generic industrial switcher. From what ive seen, Evemodel stuff is reasonably good, but as has already been mentioned, you need to take it for what it is, which is basically Tyco brownbox, Lima, Bachmann etc stuff from the 70's and 80's... It isnt winning any prizes for detail, but theyre a pretty cheap (by todays standards anyway) way to build up a generic train to just have fun with. For what its worth, ive got some highly detailed locos (I model Australian 80's and 90s era) that cost me close to 400 each, but i rarely run them because theyre fickle about trackwork, and theyre so damn fragile... My Haskell L class for instance is an absolutely oustAndingly detailed model, however small details like sanding tubes or lifting points for the dyno geid cover are so small and delicate, you'd almost sneeze and blow them off. The first derailment i had through a dodgy set of points wiped out one of the tubes. And i dont like transporting them to my club because again, they are so fragile and dont travel well. Same with my nicely detailed SDS wagons. I pretty much have the most fun with my enournous roster of 30-40 year old Lima and Powerline locos, and buckets of Tyco, Life Like and Lima rolling stock because i simply dont have to think about them. Theyre rugged, dont have much applied detail to break off and they run on basically anything that vaguely resembles rail. And on the odd occasion i have a mishap and break something, its no big deal, because parts are plentiful and the stuff wasnt expensive.

It would be great to see them restart "cheap sets" again like in the 80s. Not everybody wants to be a rivet counter, some just want to have fun. Tyco and Bachmann dominated for that market. I think there's a new market for this again.

Wait a minute I think I actually recognized that locomotive as some commentators have said this is not a model power it's actual Mantua Tyco, I believe in the video where you restored a collection of ho scale model trains, the first locomotive would actually have been the original variant, you should probably try comparing those two to see any similarities or differences since they have the more or less the same tooling I think

I haven't seen a Mantua with this type of drive but it's possibly the same shell etc.

Model power actually did this exact model , with the directional ligth too, is a redesing from Lima, Tyco and Mantua I have 2 one with CN logo and other from mantua that is an 0-6-0 completely made from meta...

I think the site adjustments is why the company thinks It should be slightly higher price than when model power sold Brass worm gear more painting/details picked out, And they actually picked out the whistle Which was not a feature on the original MP loco,

I think they gave it two road names, NW and "railrway train" not sure why they wouldn't just pick one for it.

Looks like Evemodel is also re-producing the old Model Power 0-4-0 Fat Boy locomotives as well, I recently got a model power Fat Boy but it seems the axle and drive gear aren't attached anymore so the gear slips on the axle and it'll just sit there and run the motor, gears turning but wheels not turning

For a basic product that might last 1-2 Christmases as a second engine for a starter layout, why not? Would love it if Evemodel offered an undecorated version with an easy-to-apply decal set with several different road choices instead of a made-up company. But first they have to work on that shaky performance.

I was wondering if you replaced the red backup light and added an operating pilot coupler? I could see those as adaptations for your layout. I always wondered why they never put an operating pilot coupler on a switcher. I can see figures in the cab, removal of the molded-on details and replacement with lost wax brass castings. The light, bell, dynamo and compressor are examples. I bet you could change out the cylinders and rods. A little light weathering and you would have a sweet looking locomotive.

@@SMTMainline I wonder if bowser's valve gear would work? You may need to change out the crosshead. I had their A-5 0-4-0 and I liked the simplicity. A fun kit to have built and detailed. I put a decoder in mine with working head and backup lights.
