Your note from your mom made me cry!!! I agree with another commenter, my Western parents said "I love you" constantly to me growing up, but it was never backed up by action or real encouragement. To know that your parents supported you this much even when you went against medical school is just the most amazing thing. I would take THIS over "I love you" any day!

I'm a college student in America and I went to a Chinese immersion school from K-8th grade, I’ve taken Chinese classes ever since but don't often get the opportunity to hear it outside of class anymore, especially in a natural cadence, so I love these kinds of videos! Please keep making them. 希望这个暑假能去台湾留学,提高我的中文!

Thanks for the video!! My parents also don`t often say I love you, they believe that it should be shown in actions rather than in words! I think that yours have the same opinion.

I've been watching this channel for a year now, and I'm from Kerala. I've loved learning about China since I was young, and now I've been admitted to the Central University of Gujarat for my MA in Chinese. Interestingly, I completed my bachelor's in Arabic. I've spent my whole life in my hometown, and I never wanted to leave, but now I'm preparing to travel 2,000 km to Gujarat. The day I leave will be incredibly tough for me. Just as you mentioned, I’ve never cried or shown my emotions until I reached the railway station, and then the tears just flowed. My heart feels heavy leaving my parents behind. I've watched this video multiple times and now I understand why you couldn’t complete that sentence

I really liked this type of video and your parents sound so lovely! I say "I love you" to my parents probably every time I talk to them. It's kinda just something you say like at the end of a phone call or when saying good bye. I hadn't thought of what it might be like to grow up in a culture where you don't say it, but it's clear from your stories of them and your emotion in the video that not saying it doesn't mean you don't love each other. In fact you can see it in the clear actions of your parents, and like what some other people are saying, I think the actions that show you love someone are more important at any rate.

In Manchester, UK, when you jump in a taxi, they driver will (would?) ask: "where are you going to love?", no matter if the passenger is a man or woman. Sweet. A friend of mine from Norway told me he once went into a shop and the owner said "how are you doing son?". My friend did not understand that it is just an endearing and sweet way of communicating. It causes one to like the community!

Hello Shuoshuo laoshi. Thank you for sharing your story while simultaneously teaching us your beautiful language. This video made me very emotional. And when you got to the letter, I was struggling not to cry and keep it together. I come from a culture (the Latino culture) where saying I love you to our parents or our parents saying it to us is not a strange thing to hear. At least in my immediate family. You have awesome parents indeed! And you seem to be a reflection of who they are. Thank you for teaching us, Mandarin. Ps: I know you are learning Spanish. I'm a native spanish speaker. Let me know if you need a friend to practise with😊

It’s an excellent video that points out a very fundamental cultural difference between east and west in the way we (in the west) verbalize (over verbalize) our emotions. Thank you for sharing your personal story and deep deep feelings for your parents. This is a universal story that touches the heart which makes learning Mandarin very effective.

Even though we didn't use to say I love you very often in my family, I agree that there was no doubt about the love between our parents and us children (or vice versa), but since I've been with my husband I've grown to appreciate the value of saying and hearing "I love you" daily. In my husband's family, they say I love you to each other all the time and It was very strange for me hearing him say it to me so often in the beginning. In time, though, it bacame more and more normal and, because of that, I started saying it to my parents and my mei mei and it was strange for them in the beginning too, but then I started hearing it from them also and, well, my experience is that it's really nice. It's good to say it. It's good to hear it. It's strange and awkward when it's not always been done (for the many reasons that people may have for not saying it), but I really recommend it. Someone has to be the one to start saying it... be brave. It's okay if we don't hear it back, but if we feel it, we should express it, especially if it's a good feeling, that's my opinion nowadays.

There are some aspects I can agree with. You seemed to have focused more on the parent-child relationship in this video. Generally, too many people say 我爱你 / I love you these days. Unfortunately, sometimes they are just words. True love is shown through actions. Great video to practice listening skills!

I'm Dutch and if I told my parents I love them, they would definitely think something was wrong or I was dying XD. We just never say these things out loud. There are other ways to express love than just saying the words. Saying words is easy. Showing love through actions and care is much harder and more meaningful.

Sweet sentiment! On a totally random side note, this is the first video I've ever found with the PERFECT subtitle layout, where you have one language at the far top and the other on the far bottom! Typically, I understand 80-90% of the Chinese and just need the English translation for 1 or 2 characters/pairs, but I find that when the English and Chinese are right on top of each other (which is what you see on most videos), I tend to just read one or the other, apparently because there is too much cognitive load for to switch gears when they are so close to each other. In the past, I thought the solution was to look for a website or program that displayed only the Chinese but allowed you to hover over specific characters if you needed the translation for just those few characters. But watching this video just made me realize that your layout achieves exactly what I need and without the hassle of hovering! I mainly read the Chinese at the top but glanced down to check the English if there was a word or two I didn't recognize. Something about the separation made the cognitive switch easier. I really hope you continue to do videos with this subtitle format!

We're ethnic Chinese too. Even though we were educated in the English language, we still retain that non- expressive part of Chinese culture. I've never said, "i love you" to my parents & neither have they said the same to me. But all of us know, for a fact, that we love one another very much.

Hey, what a beautiful story you share here! -- It's very similar to mine in several ways. In my language, the translation of "I love you" is not something you say to your parents (or children). And when I moved to North-America, I first found the (in my view) inflationary use of the expression rather alienating. -- Thanks for sharing!

I grew up in a middle class English-speaking South African home in the 60’s and 70’s, and it was the same- we never said ‘I love you’ to each other, although we did love each other very much. I’m really impressed by your candidness and how you open up to your KZbin audience. Just one thing I don’t understand: if you never doubted that your parents loved you, why did you feel that insecurity about the possibility of them leaving you? You’re a very smart woman, doing such great work and earning well from it. Well done!

In fact, the words seem trivial to me compared with behavior that demonstrates love. I think expressing worry is more the way we expressed our love outside of actions. I think saying this phrase is very personal and also cultural, some cultures say it more than others but also if you want to say it or not is finally down to the individual. My mum often used to say 'I love you' at the end of phone calls and I always felt pressured to say 'I love you too' This made me feel extremely uncomfortable, not because I don't love my mum but I felt that I should chose to say it and not be forced to say it. I think after a while and many awkward conversations later, my mum doesn't say it as much and when she does, she's not expecting me to say it back. But I have told my mum I love her on occasions and I feel that I show it, I know that she'll not be on this earth for a long a time now so I make time to spend quality time with her even though I'm extremely busy with my career and study and just living my life. I think she knows but I'll make an effort to say it occasionally too because I know the words mean much to her too.

Great letter, Great parents = Great daughter who is beautiful inside and outside. Actions speak louder than words, so you don't have to say I love you, if you are speaking loud and clear "I love you" through your actions. However, they say that the pen is mightier than the sword, this is because words are also powerful. So the moral of the story is to have the best of both world's and that would be “speech acts” and “performative utterances”. To say I love you in words and in actions. When you don't take anything for granted, you will be more open to do it all just because, tomorrow is not promised to anyone. A penny for your thoughts, what do you think will have the most impact on your parents? a) If you say to them, I love you everyday for two continual weeks before you leave to go about your day. b) If you are silent, and just give them a (hug-squeeze) for two minutes for two continual weeks before you leave to go about your day. c) If you say "I love you", and give them a (hug-squeeze) for two minutes, for two continual weeks before going about your day, and then asked them which of these did they enjoy the most. Would it be A, B, or C?...lol 💯%👈I think [C] would be the winner...Sometimes it's fair to say, we may not miss what we don't have. Letters, voice-mails or any audio recording, pictures and videos of our love ones are so precious, and become precious treasures when they are gone. Never take life for granted, express your love in word and in action...Thank you for sharing this awesomely amazing content... May the MOST HIGH YAH blessings continue to guide you and your loved ones with peace, wellness and prosperity. 🙏💜🙏

You have a very smart mom, telling you the right things at the right moment. That's wonderful. I lived several years in China- Shenzhen and Suzhou- and I really miss it living there, but my feeling was, Chinese people consider much more thinking twice about what they say to others to stay respectful and not to hurt other people in any way. In western cultures, I guess unfortunately, people are very direct often and later maybe even regret what they said, but they already did. That didn't happen in China. Although sometimes it was a little bit hard, because I was working as technical teacher and quality manager there, after I adjusted to the Chinese way, it became hard for me to tell workers they didn't do their work right or they made mistakes. So I always had to think twice, how to tell them, without making them lose face. A bit difficult for working situations but wonderful relationships between humans there. 我非常想中国 ❤️🇨🇳😍❤️
