I've been a investor for 10 years and I firmly believe the stock market is legal gambling. Given when you invest into a company your betting that they go up or if your shorting it, hoping it will go down. Even look at puts and calls short term option trading where you can bet the stock will go up to a certain price by a certain day lol sounds like gambling to me.

@@HungoverHistorian-zf6gi Long term is not a losing game at the right valuations in the right company. The problem is just that. Look at Tencent stock since 2008. Up almost 40x even after the insane tech crackdowns back in 2021. Or Baidu stock since 2005. Up 6.7x despite the insane tech crackdowns as well. Or Moutai. Up 172x since 20021. Or BYD. Up 19x since 2008. And so forth. The problem is you have to be really really really good at learning to read financial statements in China with extreme patience to make money in the stock market. For the average retail, that isn't happening. You basically need to either be a talented professional with high patience or an insider trader. The former is kind of stupid because those who already have the talent to pick the right stocks already have enough talent to make a lot of money so money isn't as important in the first place. But ... stocks themselves in China is not a losing game. However, index funds can be a losing game in Chinese stocks historically because there's so many garbage companies lying their numbers and state owned enterprise firms which see investors as a source of free money.

Those who DCA into beat down stocks and are willing to hold for a long duration will likely be rewarded. @HungoverHistorian-zf6gi5 күн бұрын
This is rather incorrect, do you think a business owner could “afford” to lose his business? It’s all about risk/reward assessment, given that zero risk does not exist. Anyway, taking out loans to invest in the stock market is always an awful idea.
@rhyanjill4 күн бұрын
@@HungoverHistorian-zf6gi At the core of the investment proverb of “only invest money you’re willing to lose” is the idea of understanding your risk tolerance so no, we’re not saying 2 different things here. You’re just saying it in a different way. The only reason why I wouldn’t say it the way you say it, like, recommend everyone to do a risk benefit analysis or a risk assessment is because at the end of the day, every noob investor loves to pretend that they’re an expert based on investment tips they learned from a KZbin video. Therefore it’s more responsible to tell everyone that if you’re investing, losing money permanently in bad products or even getting trapped in unrealized losses is part of the game so only invest money you’re willing to lose. And yes, that applies to businesses as well. Giant franchises are able to grow big because they always include the loss of a store as part of their risk calculations. And I would say this is the most misunderstood part about “margins”. It’s not always the case that the corpos are just greedy even though it often is, but they always include the potential for losses in computing what “margins” are considered profitable. So, a business owner who fail to account for the potential for loss is not doing a great job.
