The best part is that the Chinese ones actually have some meaning and can be commonly applied to daily life, but the Western ones like the Spongebob one literally have no meaning at all. Ask a Chinese what any of the Chinese memes mean and the will give you answer, but ask a western what the spongebob or shark one means and its just stupid shit hahaha. But the western ones are funnier.

Fun fact! Here in Sweden, a significant portion of our memes/reaction images are of our current king, Carl XVI Gustaf, lovingly referred to as 'Knugen' because of a misspelling of 'kungen', aka. Correction: “表情”, or "Facial Expressions" in Chinese, refers to different things than “表情(Facial Expressions) 包(Bags / Packs)”. “表情” is usually emojis or emoticons, basically things that look like a face and convey emotions in more conventional ways. “表情包” is named with the additional "pack" since they can pack (concentrate) a lot of emotions at once. They are more akin to reaction images. So, yeah, the "Bao" makes a difference - but, still, thanks for the shoutout! As for other things about Chinese meme culture: We have similar terms to English memes, but used VERY differently. We also use "daddy", or “爸爸”, as a meme. However, it is not sexual at all in Chinese contexts. In fact, calling someone daddy is seen to be the a sign of ultimate respect and gratitude for the person (basically because of Chinese family cultures and whatnot). So, in many 表情包, you can find captions referring to the "fact" that the user is the receiver's dad. We also feature a lot of dogs, but in almost the opposite connotation as in English. If you call someone a "dog", or “狗”, it is a MASSIVE sign of absolute disrespect and means you want to stir up a fight. People often use 表情包 calling each other dogs as insults. Yes, even dog lovers use the word 狗 in this context quite liberally. In funny pet videos where the owner pranks the dog, a common comment is "I [the pet] might not be a human, but you [the owner] is a real dog", or “我可能不是人,但你是真的狗”. [TRIGGER WARNING: DISTURBING IMAGES AND GRATUITOUS VIOLENCE AHEAD] We also make a lot of yomama jokes, but WAYYY nastier than "yomama fat". One copypasta insult, I remember, is very story-like description of how the receiver's mom is cremated while she is still alive, so she screamed and struggled in agony for three day straight, with the funeral directors tying her up with chains to mke sure she dies. After she is cremated, her ashes are simply spread on the streets before a street washer sent it all into the sewer while playing happy songs. So, yeah.

Chinese person here. IMHO the reason why Chinese memes look quite different from western ones is not only due to the firewall, but also language barrier and cultural difference in general. There are many expressions that only make sense in Chinese, or rather, offer a better or stronger sense of emotion. For example, the biaoqingbao at 0:45 literally means “I need some oxygen”, which in Chinese, means being very, very overwhelmed. There is no equivalent slang in other languages (as far as I’m aware), which is why most non-Chinese people wouldn’t get it.

Actual Chinese speaker that use their chat app here. Biaoqingbao shown in this video are just edge of iceberg what they use to communicate, there are more varient and style. It is not just a crop of face into a panda head. Other varient such as out of context anime screenshot with fake caption, Yajuu Senpai reference, manipulated emoji from both Unicode and baidu etc... Those things are prevelant in chat app, not only in social media. It is use as sticker to express your ironic reaction. And the trend change very fast. The one use in example are already out of fashion at least 5 years ago, right now you are more likely to see anime screenshot edit, doge, cat, and chat sticker similar to Line.

The panda memes are like the OG chinese reaction image, but by now it isnt really a meme anymore, just an everyday picture used to express emotions. The current national meme of China is the song 《只因你太美》sung by 蔡徐坤 (Cai Xukun). The meme has been around for at least 4 years now, and doesn't seem to be dying down anytime soon. The main gimmick is about how he gravely mispronounced his lyrics to the point where they seem completely different from what they were actually supposed to mean, as well as his goofy ass dance/ basketball moves. Regional type of memes are also amazing to look into. Here in Indonesia, most commons memes are reaction images / WhatsApp stickers of black men with captions such as: "sebaiknya jangan terlalu gegabah" (better not be too bold), "pake nanya 😂" (you're still asking?) "waduh 😅" (whoops) "di luar nalar coy! 👉😲👈" (it's not logical!) "mamah aku takut" (mommy i'm scared)

what's interesting is that I think that their reaction images are a lot like our early 2000s memes. The reaction images seem similar to our old emoticons and abbreviations like LMAO/LOL or pepe and troll face. I wonder that since the firewall is blocking western influence are they simply slower in their timeline? like, are they in our early 2000s era of memes and going through the same or at least identical eras we are. in 10 to 15 years will they be going through similar meme stages as we are today(barring the CCP doesn't collapse). If so then I need to go to china so that I would finally be up to date in my sense of humor.

No, you have to know that these memes existed in China more than ten years ago, and now there are more than these popular in China. Although there are many people on the Internet, it needs to take into account the different cultures of different places, so memes are relatively easy to understand, and The Chinese Internet does not need to consider these at all, so in fact, Chinese people will find it boring to watch many foreign memes, as if they were products of more than ten years ago. (hope google translate can understand me)😂😂😂

It's not that. Asians online have access to much of the same stuff via VPNs. But culture has a big influence on meme evolution. I look at both eastern and western memes, and one thing I've noticed is that a branch of American memes has went bizarro in recent years, for example pairing the letter E with a random deep-fried image, trying to deliberately subvert expectations, while Asians seem to prefer more literal memes that can be used in interactive context. So you won't find memes like "ahh yes, enslaved water" in use in Asia because it can't really be used in online conversation, while photo and video memes do find popularity because they can be employed in a variety of situations. Tldr people in Asia seem to be more materialistic with their memes still while a small portion of the west that has been hyper experimenting with memeing as an abstract art form have inadvertently shaped the nonsensical sense of humor of a generation.

One another important reason of these funny emojis or meme have been developed is the strict rules of posting text on CN sosical media, every single sentence which contains "forbidden characters" would be automatically replaced with random ***, so using images to bypass those shit Internet rules are very popular among chinese young people :)

biao qing bao (表情包) basically mean a pack of these emojis that you download on your phone to use in messaging apps or websites, biao qing meaning facial expressions, bao meaning pack, combine to mean a pack of emojis. the memes though aren't call biao qing, they usually called 貼圖 (Tiētú) or what we know as stickers. * note that 表情包(Biǎoqíng bāo) and 貼圖包(Tiētú bāo) work interchangeably ** edit. biao qing bao means more emoji and Tiētú bāo is more for memes, but still they work interchangeably

Every culture has its own memes. For instance, Italian memes are mostly based on 90s/00s commercial TV icons and modern day politicians, those who are not into italian culture would get a heck out of them. We also still retain cultural influences from films like "Fantozzi", that basically created its own "memes" in the 80s, literally meme culture ante litteram, and 99% of the foreigners don't understand "Fantozzi" because is something that is so much written from italians to italians. Every culture has its own meme landscape, argumenting on "how absurd they are" is just blatant ignorance. Everything looks absurd from an outsider perspective.

Really goes to show just how similar us humans can be. China is stuck behind the aforementioned Great Firewall, theoretically completely isolated from the entire West, and yet they still developed very similar Pepjak-style images for reaction memes. This imo is why Shitpost Diplomacy will become an actual art in the 21st century
