I highly recommend A Better Tomorrow, and the rest of the 90's John Woo filmography. The Hong Kong cinema scene from the 80's to the 2000's is absolutely phenomenal, and I'm glad that an animation of a goofy bear or whatever it is may influence more people to watch these films.

I watched 'A Better Tomorrow' on Netflix a few weeks ago and I must say it is an incredibly emotional movie about friendship, betrayal, hardwork and love. I highly recommend the movie to anyone who's reading this. It has some pretty good action scenes but the movie's writing was the best part.👌

The scenes from both animations are very tense as their source deals with mafia affairs. For context Chow Yun Fat's character is having a meltdown explaining he has been putting up with shit for a number of years just to wait for an opportunity (to get back what he had lost). For the other one, the frog represents a junior Mafia member who has been (supposedly) calling out the marmot who is technically his superior, to which the marmot confronts frog and his friends at a restaurant with his guys fully loaded, hands the frog a gun staying that if frog wants to be a badass so much, marmot will give him 3 seconds to grow the balls to pull the trigger while holding the barrel to his head. Upon seeing frog fails to do so, marmot then tauntingly rebukes him saying "I've given you a chance (to kill me) and you're the one who didn't take it, so don't blame me (for you not having the balls)" All of the tension being portrayed by these actors is ruined by the fact that they're now ironically marmots. It's kind of in the same spirit as Vergil's chair meme.

The original movie is in Cantonese, it's a Hong Kong movie, it's Chow Yun Fat from the 80s/90s. However the audio that the beaver uses is the Mandarin Dub, which is why it doesn't feel as natural or matching Chow Yun Fat's performance. Mandarin has a much more flat and harsh tone to its voice, while Cantonese has a softer and more emphasis on using the throat. I say this as a Vietnamese who grew up with Cantonese/Hong Kong movies and they're much more pleasant to the ears I'd say, especially when watching the same movie but with Mandarin Dub, it's much more jarring.

There is a misunderstanding about the Chinese culture lexicon in this video essay. The Chinese do love their triad stories, but they were mostly made in HK at a time when the triads were a huge power there, similar to how there were certain time periods of the Mafia in the US and the Yakuza in Japan in their respective histories. The Mainland Chinese, compared to HK, generally don't have any "legendary" triad movies to speak of, but they do love watching these old HK movies, often dubbed in Mandarin just like the scene that this animation came from.
