So I bought a Chinese BS-0 Semi Universal Dividing Head from Ebay. The dividing head was a little over $360 Australian so I thought I would buy one for my small home machine shop and pull it apart for a look inside.
This is part two, making a few parts and replacing the main bearing.
I made a 3 part series of what I found.
Part 1 is here: • Chinese Semi - Univers...
Part 2 is here : • Chinese Semi - Univers...
Part 3 is here: • Chinese Semi - Univers...

I just got a Holtzmann BF 500 mill, it's also from China, it's actually pretty well made but oh-boy it was dirty inside, grid, muck everywhere and small things like the key and not finished surfaces was needed to be addressed, I had it apart and cleaned and fixed these things it took a lot of time but it was fun and now I know my mill and I have a good clean and precise mill, I learned from your videos that you shall not be afraid to take something apart, you might learn something.

They must just bang them together in such a hurry, no time to clean them up. They are probably paid by piece work.

Interesting to hear your comments on the BS-O dividing head regarding the state of the key. I bought a Vertex BS-O from the estate of a deceased friend, to the best of my knowledge he never used it as it was still covered with the factory grease. When i came to use it i was unable to take out the backlash, on investigation i found the key on the shaft was 3/16" in a 5mm keyway, it appeared to have been given a couple of smacks with a punch to spread it to fit ! this was how it came from the factory. I live in southern England and the name on the product was Vertex. Let the buyer beware.

Mine got a quick strip down, clean and oil tonight. I didn't pull anything off the main shaft, perhaps next time. Lots of black stuff on the inside surfaces now replaced with clean oil.

I really do appreciate the breakdown of the dividing head but it is quite painful watching u machine. Your order of operations very interesting to say the least. U can always tell hobbyist from a production machinist
