The part about the retired athlete really got me. How cruel is society to promise young boys and girls fame and fortune but leave them to beg in the streets after their body is broken and used up. Not only applicable to China. It is evil, pure evil, to treat people like disposable pawns for wealth or fame, those parents or coaches who push those kids like that I hope they are reminded of the sufferings they caused in the afterlife.

As I'm Brazilian, I'm going to explain a characteristic of all the countries that won the Cup. Sport has to be something natural, not forced as they try, training is to improve skill, Players have an incredible relationship of friendship or even brotherhood, with real love for the nation. But even so, we play against each other, which is what improves skills.

In China, the single child is expected to support parents when they get old. So it follows that the parents will do everything they can to ensure the child’s career prosperity. Being an athlete in China is risky in terms of income stability and longevity. In societies where more siblings are the norm, having one younger child being an athlete isn’t as big a risk, I guess provided that the older sibling has a career with more income stability to support the aging parents. Plus as you say, the younger child may have more “grit” and work hard.

Similarly, we naturalized a lot of foreigners in sports like table tennis and soccer team too to bring glory to the country, but most Singaporeans couldn't care less but instead mock our government for such an unscrupulous tactic. Yaoming called it back in like 2007. When asked about the prospect of there being many more Chinese players in the NBA - he said he doubts there will be more than a handful a decade or two out. China sucks at team sports as their training, coaches, and competition are all backwards and dated. There's motivation for students in the system to actively try and fail our, so they can have some hope as a regular citizen, as a opposed to the 0.01% chance of becoming a professional athlete, and 99.99% chance of having zero prospects in life. They don't have effective high school or college teams or leagues where people are active, determined, and highly competitive. It's all basically, just throw money at the problem and hope it becomes awesome - which instead predictably breeds corruption and cheating.

Non-european, middle eastern & Latin teams can't really feel bad for not having competitive teams. Almost every kid from age 6 plays football literalluy every single lunchtime in school up until we turn 18 as well as after school. That sheer amount of practice isn't really done elsewhere so the chineese shouldn't be disappointed having 1.4 billion people and not having a good team, while Wales, Uraguay & Croatia all have populations below 4 million and are ranked in the top 20, as it's not their national pastime. There is also the the issue of passion. Children from theese regions play the same game every day for their whole childhood because they love it and that can't be drilled in by special sports schools which would only disenfranchise the kids by forceing them to do drills every day. A good example is in my high school, on top of playing casually everyday, each week my class played the exact same teams every week for 5 years. All because we were so evenly matched that we didn't want to play any other sport or mix the teams for physical education class. It was just pure passion and competition. Each sunday then we would play in teams against our parents. You cant force that.

True, but I don't think the Middle East belongs in the same discussion as Latin America or Europe. Look at the AFC. Out of the top 5 in the current world rankings, the top is Japan. Historically, it's also Japan. The others include Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Australia. Titles wise, Japan is top, Korea and Iran are tied, followed by Saudi and China. Looking at the leagues, the Saudi League may have spent tons of Public Fund money, but they are still well behind MLS in rankings, and behind the Japanese and korean leagues. I don't think the Middle East can necessarily claim to be better than East Asia.

You can't look at the score to compare the relative strength of soccer teams. A team that's markedly better will play slower and safer to avoid exhaustion and injury, while still guaranteeing a win. They may also not field their best players. It's a low contact sport that's physically demanding and potentially injury-prone, so if it can be done, teams will definitely play at 50%. It's hard for a lesser team to punish a strong team.

Thanks for this video. I always wondered why the USA and China didn't have a good team. Now I see it has to do with people that don't know about futbol (soccer) being in charge. Growing up in San Francisco, I remember one of the best players I have ever played with came from Hong Kong when he was 15. I know there is a lot of talent there, but it's too bad it is being wasted. A population that loves the sport, plays it religiously, and has effective ways for youth to move up the league system (without paying money) will naturally become much better over time.

@aaronsnumbuh2
@aaronsnumbuh2 Жыл бұрын
@@toriblue I disagree. The sport with the most participation in the USA is soccer. A lot of people here love the sport. However, the people in charge don’t know what they are doing. The USA got eliminated from participating in the 2018 World Cup because American born players playing for panama and other countries scored on the USA. The USA recruits a bunch of white people (but that is changing) and overlooks our immigrant populations. This is because our “academies” are incentivized to charge $$$ for kids to play, this is how they make most of their revenues. So many incredibly talented players never get a chance and the players that attend aren’t properly challenged to develop the proper skills for the modern game. In South America real academies make the majority of their revenue from selling players, so they are incentivized to develop young guys into really good players that big clubs will want to buy. This difference in focus leads to much better players. We are beginning to see this in basketball too were some Europeans are playing pro from 14-15 and come to the league “more complete” than many of our draftees. The USA women’s game is separate, unfortunately most countries like Brazil just don’t care about the women’s game and do not invest into it so those women must play in the US collegiate system to get a chance. Even so individual awards for the best woman player rarely goes to an American because of the same issues as the American game

They don't have much of a choice in the short term - they need to buy some gas to keep their power plants running and homes functioning for heating/hot water/cooking. In the longer term we see Europe is going back to nuclear and also expanding renewables. The degree of demand was such that world natural gas prices increased over 100% because the European demand was absorbing any available LNG that could be shipped (e.g. everywhere else was "sold out"). When I was younger I played Sim City and you could slap down a power plant with a single click of a button for instant construction in the game. In the real world it takes years to build a power plant so cutting access to Russian gas had a huge impact that is not easy to work around.

One third or more of the country is delusional as fuck, would still vote orange man after all that happened, believes in the most ridiculous things and wants to turn back the time to the 50ies. And the rest of the conservatives may not be delusional, but still plays the game of the nutjobs for power gains. Your supreme court will remain problematic for decades too. It's sad and dangerous to see the US walk a very thin line that could even lead to a theocracy, and corporate democrats supporting business rather than people is no better solution either. Hard to have longterm trust, when so much has been destroyed, even before orange man. Didn't forget US intelligence doing espionage on our chancellor Merkel, and this was when beloved president Obama was in office, or when we have been lied to about Iraq by Bush. I also don't want any trade contract that forces horrible US food products with less quality on our markets, without us even having a tag to notify us so we can opt out. We might be similar in some aspects, we are also very afar in other aspects. And frankly we are no angels and have our own demons to fight in Europe, yet I'm still grateful I don't live in the US.

I reviewed an academic paper about this topic. If thr authors had the same storytelling abilities, im sure their would have made a larger impact.
