It's not like every other US college student. It's actually illegal to work with a student visa in the US during semesters unless it's a short-term internship *directly* related to their program of study approved by the university to count for credit, so the only real options are under-the-table cash-paying jobs with massive consequences to both the student and the employer if caught (fines, jail time, deportation etc.). Also, most financial aid and scholarship options that can help US students in need aren't available to international students. Their only options are to either take out a loan (which no bank will approve them for since they're considered too risky i.e. they can run away and go back to China instead of paying, plus they can't even get a social security number for work-authorization related reasons), or go home. It's not even close to every other US college student, especially those paying in-state tuition with pell grants who have the option to legally work during the semesters or get approved for a loan.

The stable was on agricultural lease land - land that the government has set aside for farming, it cannot legally be used for commercial or residential property. The land was owned by a family in China who were holding on to it until the laws changed so they could sell it to condo developers. The house and barns on the property were falling apart - plumbing regularly failed, the roof was ready to fall in any time. The daughter of the owners lived locally and any time we wanted to improve or change anything we had to talk to her - it would take her weeks to get back to us and she only spoke English in the very loosest sense of the word. About a year after I finished school and had moved on, the owners raised the rent too much and forced the stable out. I wonder if these people are among the struggling speculators of China now?

These could be the best thing that ever happen to the college children from overseas, roll up your sleeve and work to appreciate your parents. Experience in hardship is a good, I have been there and it makes u an adult fast.

As Malaysian i have to say, public universities offer 80-120K is for complete course of bachelor degree (not a year), depending on what degree, state University offer 20-60K for complete courses, both excluding living expenses, i once thought Malaysian degree is expensive, quiet shocking to learn other country is more expensive compare to malaysia. 😅

I'm going to say it, what a based dude & I'm more than happy to stand by my personal opinion🙂🥸🥸🥸🥸

Oh, poor Chinese students, so now you have no money to pursue your high standard life in the US ? So now you have to work to pay your tuition ? So you have no more money from your parents to drive luxury cars to your college, to spend your weekends at 900 USD per night for hangouts ? Praise your great communist party and its so smart leader for having put you and your family to this point. Honestly I feel no empathy at all at those complaints of harsh life of the Chinese students in the US or the situation of their family loosing fortune and businesses in the mainland, it's simply karma as those rich families are without any doubt have connection with high ranking officials of the government or even are high ranking members of the CCP to possess wealth enough to send their children study abroad !!!
