The second purushartha or human goal is 'Artha' or the procurement of wealth. Wealth is the means for security. When dharma is the basis of wealth, wealth blesses one with fulfilment. Else it leads only to self-destruction. This concept is presented with the story of Chanakya and Chandragupta. After establishing the rule over Magadha, Acharya Vishnugupta Chanakya assertively implemented the righteous means of wealth management. He explained Chandragupta that each earning citizen must pay tax to the government and share wealth with the poor by means of charity. Not doing so will lead to unequal distribution of wealth; and the social distrust so born will destroy the Nation. The wealth earned by unrighteous means leads to calamity!
Key Insights:
Wealth with Responsibility: The episode emphasizes that wealth (Artha) is crucial for societal stability and personal well-being. However, it should be earned ethically and used for the benefit of society, not just personal gain.
Distinction Between Artha and Greed: Through characters like Chanakya (Vishnugupt) and Chandragupta, the narrative shows that rulers or individuals must avoid greed and accumulation of wealth for selfish purposes. Artha should serve Dharma (moral duty) and uplift society, not create divisions or exploitation.
Social Responsibility: Wealthy individuals and rulers have a responsibility toward their subjects or society. The episode warns that failing to respect this responsibility can lead to societal imbalance and moral decay.
Balance of Goals: It highlights that Artha should be pursued in balance with Dharma (righteousness), Kama (desires), and Moksha (liberation). If any of these is pursued at the expense of others, it leads to an unfulfilled and imbalanced life.
Moral of the Episode:
Wealth is an essential part of life but must be earned and used in harmony with moral principles and social welfare. The pursuit of Artha should not compromise Dharma or lead to greed, but instead, be a tool for supporting righteous living and the overall good of society.
