When I lived In San Bernardino, California I would go down to Chino Airport every chance that I got, loved walking around and checking out all of the airplanes. My buddy John Ames who was a pilot and me would go to the dinner before walking around and daydreaming about all of the wonderful airplanes. John if you are still around it's Reggie from Carretta Trucking days.

The remarkable thing is that these are supported by private individuals. America also preserves a lot of warships, though that necessarily involves much more public bodies. To see so many FLYING warbirds is quite something.

Outstanding images of this event. Also learned about a plane which I didn't know before seeing this video, watching it I just was guessing at what kind of 4 engined bomber I was looking, it was not a B17 (too large and flat fuselage) and not a B24 Liberator (missing the double tail fins) it turned out to be the PB4Y-2, indeed a very rare aircraft. Altough I have been able to see some of the planes flying in the UK at Duxford Flying Legends, Chino Planes of Fame is still high on the list as one of the great airshows on this planet.
@stephenandreason72106 жыл бұрын
dieselmupke my father flew PB4Y2 s into typhoons while stationed on Guam for the Navy in the early 50s. They were required to penetrate into the eye at 300 feet. He told me that it was scarier than flying combat or carrier night landings. I understand that this is the only PB4Y2 still flying.

It was certainly great seeing all those old war birds still able to fly free and see the A-10 Thunderbolt 2 in the air with it's elder relation the original Thunderbolt. I would like to see the fast mover that can turn inside an A-10, my first time seeing one was in PACAF in the mid 70's we had a pair visit to get some air to air recognition training in for our fast mover drivers. needless to say the first bounce they got a head on look at the gun and their asses handed to them by the older guys flying those warthogs

As much I like radials like anyone else - there's nothing that will top the sound of the P-38 taking off with those huge blades and muffled V12 sound. It's kind of spooky in fact.

I cannot, simply cannot, understand why the beloved Warthog is battling against retirement. It might be old but as Churchill said about Atlantic Escort Vessels, " They are cheap and nasty. Cheap for us and nasty to the enemy" Compare the cost against an F 35! The Warthog is still a very effective ground attack aircraft and has saved the lives of countless soldiers. Long live the HOG.
@williammyers42696 жыл бұрын
Adrian Larkins I agree with you. The Warthog is the greatest ground attack aircraft ever designed - it still is. When it's designer Pierre Sprey says the F-35 is a turkey, people should be sitting up to pay attention. Those lobbyists for the M-I-C may bankrupt us and get a lot of our boys killed in the process.

I love the photography from the air show and those airplanes are looking great. It must be next to impossible to get parts for those aircraft since most of those which was at Davis Monthan have been destroyed and the metal sold to the foundries. The even destroyed all the B-52's there except for the H models which they keep just in case one crash.

That's interesting -- not that many people were associated with Privateers during the war, since relatively few were sent overseas. Quick question -- is there a photo album in your family that might have Privateer pictures? We're always looking for photos for article and video projects on the Privateer and Liberator. Especially looking for photos of Privateer number 59759, which carried the last three digits -- 759 -- on the side of the fuselage.

GREAT video. The only plane that I could not place was that big bomber ??? Has some of the profile of the B-24 but not the same. What is it ????
@airailimages6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. The 4-engine bomber is a Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateer, developed out of the B-24. It has a similar fuselage, but 7 feet longer, than a B-24.
@johnveglio44336 жыл бұрын
airailimages. I did a little check on google, they said it was a B-32. They also said that there are no longer any left in existence!!! Well I guess that shows GOOGLE doesn’t know anything !!!!!
@williammyers42696 жыл бұрын
The B-32 was a completely different airplane developed as a back-up for the B-29 project. The Privateer on the other hand was a beefed up and modified B-24 designed for long range maritime patrols. The B-32 was an excellent aircraft, but because the B-29 proved successful, it was considered redundant and was not put into service bombing Japan. (Check out my book "Fighters, Bombers, Tanks, Wolves." Available at Amazon.)

I thought Gen. Kenney (sp?) had a couple dozen Dominators in the Pacific?
@williammyers42696 жыл бұрын
I have seen film footage of the Convair B-32 being used somewhere in the Pacific theatre. Given its long range capability, it would have made sense to utilize the very limited production run there in some role. However, I am not aware of it having been used consistently alongside the B-29 in the campaign to bomb Japanese cities. Disappointed as they may have been, Convair were not sitting on their hands at this point as I believe they already had the B-36 on the drawing board.

Well, I came back to watch this video after having watched it earlier today and I see one of "those" types had to show up. You know, griping and complaining about the music in the second half of the video? "I wanna hear the engines!" "I can't hear the engines!" Why is it so important to hear the engines? That's something I've never thought about, believe it or not. Weird, huh? I thought the music was a nice addition.
@lesizmor90796 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I almost started writing a gripe to him-- but he quickly added a retraction, saying they had left music on in the background at his house. In general tho, most video uploaders who add music put it all over the whole video. aaaargh! He is correct that those large piston sounds are part of the thrill. But this vid was done very well: no music for the normal speed (real) passes, well mic'd with wind noise dampened, and very appropriate music for the slow-mo finish.
@craigpennington12516 жыл бұрын
P.S. That PB4Y-2 needs to do a barrel roll.

That "music" (not needed), is spoiling the great video... Fred, loose the "music". To we, the aircraft lovers, the best music is the engines real sound.!!! NO "music", and more comments, please.?? Actually, I can identify all the a/c in this video, but, perhaps 90% of other people would like your commenting and identifying all those wonderful birds... It will ad technical value and knowledge for such a great video.!!!

Appreciate your comment. We've said it before, and we'll say it again -- the only time you hear music in this video is when the ambient audio is unusable.
