November, 2011 run of Chinook (King) Salmon on the American River, CA at the Nimbus Hatchery Fish Ladder.
According to the US Fish and Wildlife Dept., once salmon reach freshwater in their spawn they do not eat because their digestive systems shut down. They may strike a lures, etc. but that is because of their instinct to attack prey.

Whoever invented fish ladders is awesome. What seems like an impossible problem( going uphill while underwater) is actually fixed quite easily

Just like the ladders at Bonneville Dam, McNary, Lower Granite, and all the others. Still awesome to see, I never get tired of seeing this! Just would like to see more fish go up stream to spawn naturally.

I'm not from the West coast and so I'm not familiar with fish ladders but I just wanted to know what "awaiting sacrifice" is. Great video! Are these wild fish returning to spawning grounds?
@AnotherAmateur
@AnotherAmateur 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert George The salmon will be killed in the hatchery. Eggs from females will be mixed with milt from males. The young will be raised at the hatchery until mature enough to be released into the river to head back to the ocean. In a few years they will return to the hatchery guided by smell. So that is what "sacrifice" means.

Sacrifice because Salmon usually die after spawning; they only spawn once in their lifetime. everipedia.org/wiki/Salmon_run/ www.worldatlas.com/articles/amazing-natural-phenomena-the-great-salmon-run.html

***** It was serendipity. By chance we were there at the right time and on the right day to see so many salmon climbing the ladder. Really, I did not need to edit much out because every shot was filled with salmon.

They are eager to breed. But doing so means they die. "Sacrifice" was my dramatic way of describing that.

Do they die because they don't eat in fresh water or they die because of something else?
@AnotherAmateur
@AnotherAmateur 6 жыл бұрын
I do not know what causes salmon to die after breeding. There is new evidence that some salmon ingest salmon eggs while in fresh water.

Why is the river blocked?
@AnotherAmateur
@AnotherAmateur 6 жыл бұрын
The river is blocked to force the salmon to move up the fish ladder to the hatchery.
@AnotherAmateur

The dam creates a lake (Folsom Lake) that supplies water to cities during the long dry summer months. When the dam was built no fish ladder was built with it. Without this fish ladder, and the fish hatchery, there would be very few salmon on the American River.

Spawning salmon's digestive systems shut down when they reach fresh water. They may strike but that is because of their instinct to hunt prey. The US Fish and Wildlife Service notes that spawning salmon do not "eat".

Not to sound Pessimistic....but doesn't this fish ladder have adverse effect on the fish in the long run ? Only the stongest and agile of salmon should make it to there breeding grounds thus helping to create a stronger group of salmon.....this just let's all of them through......they're gonna get lazy !!!
@AnotherAmateur
@AnotherAmateur 5 жыл бұрын
The way to their spawning streams is blocked by a very high dam across the river that even the most muscular salmon could not jump.
