Chip Channel Restorations

4 жыл бұрын

I picked up this 1965-66 Tonka Farms Horse Truck from a local antique shop. Overall, outside of the rust and corrosion it was in pretty decent shape. Its missing the ramp tailgate and two black horses that would have came with the truck.
I started the restoration with the removal of the wheels. The white walls had become brittle and broke upon disassembly. With the hub caps and white walls out of the way, I ground down the axle retainers and removed the axles and tires from the truck. I then moved onto removal of the horse bed. Using a dremel tool equipped with a carbide bit I ground down the tubular rivets, then punched them out with a punch and hammer. Once the fenders were removed, I was able to remove the horse bed. Here I bent the tab on the horse divider up, only afterward figuring out that it's unnecessary to do. You can simply remove the lower tab and pull upwards on the divider to remove. Next was the removal of the tubular rivets holding the grille assembly to the main body. The headlight can be removed using a small socket and light pressure. With the grille and bumper out the way we can now access the retaining tabs holding the main body to the frame. Lastly is the removal of the cab roof and windshield. I struggled here a little bit due to the front roof posts being stuck. Once i got them to move up slightly I was able to use a screw driver to pry the front posts up and rotate the roof top backwards to release it from the body. With the disassembly completed it was off to the sand blaster. Using glass bead, all painted parts were stripped. The tires and windshield were then cleaned in soapy water. I decided after cleaning them that i would just replace them. I had a little higher expectation for this restoration than what they turned out like after cleaning. I will reuse the tires and windshield on another Tonka project later down the road. The axle shafts were cleaned on the bench grinder wire wheel. Then the grille and bumper assembly was wire brushed and buffed. For this project I decided to use powder coat and purchased a color called pale green from powder by the pound. Using my Wagner Sprint EPGx powder gun all of the painted parts were powder coated. I baked them in my small batch oven made from a PitBoss Copperhead vertical smoker. The pellet smoker parts were removed and switched out for a 220v heating element tied to a contactor relay. With the oven preheated the parts were baked @ 425F for 15 mins each time. I hung them on a rack to cool prior to removing them from the hooks. With all the parts cleaned up, reassembly started. Reinstalled the cab roof with the new windshield, attached the body to the chassis and locked it into place with the tabs behind the bumper. Installed the cleaned headlights back into the grille assembly and riveted the grille back onto the main body. Riveted the horse bed back onto the chassis, this was pretty tricky to do, and I did it off camera. The front rivet is in a spot that my rivet tool cannot reach. I ended up using a bolt and socket with the rivet tool press tapped to the inside of the bed, taped the rivet down into the hole with painter's tape and then pressed the rivet together using my 6" bench vise. I could have used a couple extra hands with this which is why i was unable to record it. Once the center rivet was in, the last rivet was pressed into place. Up next was the horse divider installed inside of the horse bed, followed by the horse ramp. Reinstalled the fenders, replaced the tires, whitewalls and hubs caps. The axles were locked into place using 1/8" top hat retainers using a hammer and socket that fit over the top hats tightly. With the decals installed, this restoration was complete.

We had a horse that had to have an open back on the trailer because he did not want to get closed in. Loved this because of your work and because of the memories it brought back. that horse lived to be 28 years old. My Dad loved that horse and that horse loved him.

I am really sick and often can't find a decent distraction from pain. These videos are just the best of the world I grew up in . I really appreciate your attention to detail 😁 you couldn't have known that your videos are helping my life because I will get better and maybe free of colon cancer which has been cut out. Now all I need to do is eat and take kemo without panicking. These videos are giving me great patience and memories. I am very thankful for your videos and will watch on as a subscriber who is tired of politics and silly Karen videos. Every minute you put into your projects are essential to preserving awesome history and somewhat medicinal to me. Keep the sheep herding and gods speed to you CHIP 😁👍

My first vehicle back in 1980 was a 1971 Ford f 250 with a shad darker green. The hood had a black strip about 2 feed wide down the middle. Then in 1982 I found a 1965 Ford f 100 with a straight 6 and 3 on the tree. I'd say I like the 65 better. Through out the 1980's I had 3 of the 1965's. Love the video's keep up the good work and stay safe.

I've been watching your channel during the recent weeks and I've watched several of these videos. Excellent work with passion & perfection. I've noticed that this particular video might be one of the first restoration videos as I've seen you fumbling with the tab slots of the Tonka truck, in the more recent videos you've become an expert and won't fumble at all! I've also noticed, there wasn't a subscribe sticker in your sandblasting unit earlier & you edit out the part in which the painted parts are retrieved after being baked in the oven. It's very good effort. ❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Not a bad restoration, if I may say so myself! I have one of these......It first belonged to my dad when he was a kid, and he passed it on to me. Between the two of us, it's now in fairly rough shape......The windshield is missing, all the rims from the tires came off, its paint is scratched and chipped in places and it is a tad rusted in some spots......I may have to try and restore it one day, if I get the proper tools and gear!
