Chirk Castle & Gardens

Suitable for children and family viewing A tour of the inside of Chirk castle has to be booked but before visiting the gardens there is the Courtyard that has rooms to see, also a gift shop and café. The gardens are pleasant to walk around and there is a long Terrace to walk along with a nice viewpoint at the end.
In the late 13th century, Chirk Castle was one of several medieval Marcher fortresses sited on the Welsh-English border to keep the Welsh under English rule. The location of the castle was carefully chosen to maximise its defensive capabilities. It had the most up-to-date defences with round “drum” towers that allowed archers a wide firing field and created a “killing zone” where the fields of fire overlapped. Wider at ground level, the towers have 5 metre thick walls and were designed to splay outwards so making it difficult for siege towers and battering rams to get close.

I took this last September and the Terrace was lovely. I thought it might be windy as it was high and open to the elements but very nice that day. The clip of the view from the terrace lets one imagine being a lord or lady observing their dominion. ~ The yew crown on a cushion looks quite difficult to trim. ~ Wales must have many interesting gardens, partly due to its mild , if chilly and wet, climate, but I have found very few videos on yt showing them. ~ As always, thanks for another wonderful post.

The Terrace was the best part of the gardens and I saw plants that I thought would not survive in any strong winds up there but they were looking good. I have seen some lovely gardens in Wales but this is one of the best castle I have seen in Wales as many are in ruins. Yes Annie, we have many castles in the UK and many well looked after. This one in Wales is better than most of their others and with a lovely garden. I hope to go up to Scotland in a few weeks and they have some wonderful castles, very different to ours in England as many of them were large family homes so I am looking forward to them as they also have nice gardens and, with luck, some have birds of prey displays in the grounds. I took this video last September when my back was quite painful but the buggy they have for others who cannot walk the steep slope up was not working that day. However I was lucky that the lady at the desk arranged for us to drive up in our car and park on the grass or I would not have seen it. We didn't book a castle tour as it involved stairs but the gardens were mostly flat and the rose garden still have many shrubs in flower. The Terrace was a nice surprise so we took a very slow walk to see the views at the end but then a grass slope up to get back to the castle again was difficult. It went just as well but now I am getting problems with walking again. And my husband has now some problems with his health but we support each other and when the time is good, we go out in the nature for a day. That's the reason why I haven't upload for a while. It is difficult when our walking is painful as it puts a damper on our days out. We are lucky to have some nice places in Yorkshire that are not too far to travel for a day out. I am lucky I have no pain like before but was told the operation might still cause some problems but I have only found that I have a balance problem that might not get much better so if I am out on my own, which isn't often, I reluctantly use a stick but that Is a small price to pay so I must not complain. We do have a lot of very old castles in the UK but many are in ruins. The National Trust etc. are doing a great job in looking after many now. I like the ones in Scotland which were once large homes for landowners years ago and the families have past them over to a trust. There are the larger stone castles like Edinburgh and Stirling that are huge and used for defence over the years and they have very interesting.
