Chirk Castle

Chirk Castle, is a fortress, home and important to king Edward 1st. Built in 1310 it has survived the centuries virtually intact thanks to its defence design. It has been a home to many families, but the Myddelton family owned the castle for over 400 years. In 1563, the castle was granted to Elizabeth 1st's favourite Robert Dudley, soon created Earl of Leicester and Baron Denbigh, who held it as part of his extensive north Wales properties until his death in 1588.
