Hello Samourai, that line is the quench line from the hardening process!! (it shows up with the acid). For the rust some straight 7% vinaigre works just as well (takes a little longer though!! Love the process, i wish i could get (make) myself a benchtop belt sander!!

about 18 years ago i bought an Ohio tool works Slick for 10 buckscat a garage sale . i wouldn't sell it for $500 bucks now . i like it better than my newer sorby slicks as far as holding an edge and ease of sharpening . When its freshly sharp , its REALLY SHARP ! like surgical sharp . It cuts White or Red Oak , Locust , Bull pine , or Cypress like butter . i bought a big set of Old Buck Brothers chisels , cleaned them up and rehandled them in rosewood similar to a Diamic or Marples pattern handle profile and i used them a Lot . Same performance as the ohio slick versus newer tools . So i still keep them well oiled and sharpened in rust paper and a canvas tool bag when i need em . along with the usual framing tools , saws , etc . Makes it a lot easier for me to just grab the 2 bags of tools i keep ready for just about any job i wanna mess with .

because its unnecessary. the chisel was fine before he "restored" it. after a few weeks or so of using that chisel its going to look like it original did. back in the day people did not make their tools nice and shiny because they used them all the time

It's always nice to see an weathered tool brought back to life, nice video! A really cheap and effective way to remove and convert rust is to use milkstone cleaner sold at places like Tractor supply. It comes in an orange liquid and is used to clean dairy tanks and piping etc. You can get a gallon for about $12 and it's composed of about 55% phosphoric acid; dilute it 1 part acid to 3 parts water. It converts rust to a black oxide that stops the formation of rust and seems to help the tool hold on to protective oils better, all while giving it a nice gun metal color. Cheers!

Idk if anyone can answer this but I also have an old chisel from my great grandfather laying about from Erik Anton Berg brand and the steel is much darker than the chisels I have that are from the 80s. Yours I see also has quite dark steel. What's the reason for this? Anything to do with the carbon content or is it just the polish fading from an old piece of steel? Or perhaps does it have to do with something else?

It could also be where they joined 2 different types of steel. The front of the chisel is could be a hardened high-carbon steel while the tang and transition are a lower-carbon mild steel.

So my question is " what if my slick chisel is pitted so bad that smoothing it out might have me loose 1/16" - 3/32"... maybe even 1/8" thickness all around..? Is it best to leave some pitting at the top and completely flattening the bottom, or even leave some pitting at the bottom and honing with the pits?" I understand sharpening and I'm just wondering how important the overall flatness is and if it's worth loosing that much thickness.

@countrylifetales27005 жыл бұрын
Yes, I use vinegar to remove rust from tools that I restore. For really bad rust, I will leave it soaking for at least a week. When it comes out of the vinegar bath, there is no rust left. It works great but, slow.
@kaizoebara5 жыл бұрын
Hot citric acid or even hot instant coffee (5-10x stronger mix than for human consumption) work just as well and are less of a hassle to dispose of. Besides, the acid seems redundant if you are going to use a belt sander and/or wirewheel anyway.

a lot of "carpenters" ( i use that word loosely in the UK they really are just guys who nail two pieces of timber together for framing and the odd miter on a saw) tend to have a go at me for sharpening my chisels as you did on the stone , they consider it wrong and the figure eight the only way to sharpen and hone BUT i have found i get a much better edge more even sharper and longer lasting .as i actually make cabinets and boxes etc i tend to ignore their advice when i want to nail a bit of ply to a bit of wonky pine i may ask them for their advice !!! that method works well and even a cheap bosh it chisel ( a chisel you take to a site where it make get stolen and your just letting in some hinges or a lock for someone ) gives a better result then their Marple sharpened the figure 8 way sadly none of them carry a stone and dont bother to give it a quick hone before starting !! that chisel came up so beautifully and its worth spending a bit of time on a vintage tool to give it a new and longer life old saws chisels and planes should be handed down through generations because we really dont make that sort of quality anymore (at least in the UK )

What was the point of the acid when you hit it with the sander anyway?
@mightymalikie5 жыл бұрын
Its a bit over kill But removing the rust before sanding prevents the sand paper from impregnating the iron oxide below the surface of the metal making rust already started before you even finish the project
