Very relaxing...the rain and the rest of just natural sounds is exactly what was needed for the right feel of this video. Thanks for no music in the background. And... that chisel looked very sharp 💪. Well done man

Thanks Anthony! This chisel actually has been sitting in a pile of dust in my shop for over a year now. If I would have known it was going to be so easy to restore the edge I would have done it a long time ago lol

It would be much better if you explained what you are doing with each step. For example, when at the beginning you are hammering the chisel, is this to eliminate the hollow found in Japanese chisels. I have found very little info on this and would have liked a video on just this. Also, please wear safety glasses when you sharpen! I presume you are using a diamond stone to refresh and level out your sharpening stones. I would have liked to know what type of stones you are using and their grit. Also you appear to be hollow grinding, but end up with a flat surface. An explanation would have been nice. Thank you.

You only have one set of eyes using a grinder with no safety specs.

I could not run my Japanese chisels or planer blades over a high speed electric grinding stone. Sure way of steel ruination. Slow water stone or hand sharpening.

Takuan It took me a long time to build up the courage to do this, and this is actually the way Japanese craftsman fix chisels and plane blades. With the right technique and speed you won’t burn the steel and lose the temper of the steel. With that being said I have a few Japanese tools that will never touch the grinder lol

if they are good chisels, the temper temperature is around 325 degrees F (hitachi white/blue both 1 and 2 all have about the same tempering schedule) and won't be harmed by a high speed grinder. wet paper tower laid on the chisel prevents any significant heat. Chisels that need to be tempered will often crumble at the edge from anything coarse - grinder, carborundum stone, etc. If a chisel crumbles after a coarse stone like that, it needs to be tempered to the low end of the hitachi temperature range. It'll still be 65/66 but won't have poor behavior. The reason for no high speed grinder is that most people don't recognize heat until they see tempering colors, but those occur around 400 degrees F. Chisels tempered back to 325F hold an edge much much longer (and take a finer edge) than overhard chisels that have bad behavior after coarse stones. Once the edge is set, there should never be another need for a coarse stone, anyway.
