Unfortunately, in accordance to the first video, society has conditioned us to think that way, non black hair is better than ours and so on. That if your hair isn't straight it's not pretty enough, that the closest you get get to that with curly hair is having looser curls. Though they are beautiful not every black person has looser curled hair, so some of those who do have kinkier hair end up insecure about their hair. When my mom first informed me I wouldn't be relaxing my hair anymore, after having only known my hair relaxed, I won't lie, I didn't like it, cause I had heard from others who were natural that natural hair was difficult to maintain, and heard all sorts of things that disheartened me. So I transitioned for about 8 months and I binged, and I mean binge watched natural hair KZbin videos, and unfortunately even on there most of the recommended people were mostly type 3/type 4a people. Not that it was bad or anything, but the likelihood of me, a southern African fully black child having type 3 hair, tho possible, is still much lower, and so I had this expectation that my hair would look like that. Once I finally big chopped, it wasn't like that, my hair wasn't 4c, it's 4a/b but I instantly fell in love with my hair, to the point I was so diligent with my routine, my mom kinda got angry cause I had school work and sports and stuff and she thought I was spending too much time on it. My natural hair was a huge part of my self acceptance journey as a black person. It made me realise that my blackness is beautiful and that's who I am, and no amount of relaxer, straighteners etc can change that. God made me the way I am for a reason and I should accept that. Having been exposed to cyber racism at a young age (not directed directly to me but just to black people in general) my self esteem as a 9 year old took a huge dip, and my personality changed. I was extroverted as a child, never against making random friends literally anywhere, but after that became much more introvert and on guard with people. Like I love people but am scared of them at the same time if that makes sense lol. I kept part of my prior personality but again it did drastically change. So my hair really has done a lot for me and I hope people come to accept the way they are and who they are. I've come to realise that my hair and skin colour should not be representative of my beauty and personality as a person. If someone can't see past those two aspects they aren't worth being in my life. Why should I change myself, at the cost of my self worth and dignity, for people who will not be in my life for a percentage of it yah know🤷🏾‍♀️ Yah idk if this all makes sense but I just wanted to share my story with people

My daughter is mixed, has beautiful curly hair. She was told by class mates that straight hair is better than curly hair. After school she would tell me that she wants hair like me and the girls in her class and I flipped. Messed up thing is that these kids were 5. FIVE FRIGGIN YEARS OLD. Thankfully the teachers addressed it and haven't heard anything else for the past 2 years now.

That's the absolute truth about how we've hyped up wash day. Really the only extra time we have to take is for detangling. And we don't need the deep conditioner in for hours.

I don’t understand how they have to take a whole day to wash their hair. I wash, condition blow dry and braid my hair in less than two hours. I only do three or five cornrows. No need for more. Sometimes I will air dry it which takes longer. I wash my hair a few times a week as it’s hot as hell and my head sweats.

@@myescape607 there’s no rule on how to wash your hair depending on the type, thank goodness you said ‘minimum’ but some people with type 4 hair go without washing their hair for a month and it is still okay. Everyone should find what works for them.

@@kolisenye i actually meant maximum lol. If u havd type 4 hair, it doesnt absorb oils and moisturizers as fast as othrr hair types, so hair is washed max once a week to preserve it. If ur washing it more than once a week as a black girl with type 4 or 3 u wash out more moisture than preserve it. But again, as you said, do what works for you. If ur hair is still growing while washing 3 times a week, so be it.

I grew up in Northern Ontario. I only knew a handful of people of colour. I did not meet a black person until I moved to Toronto at 30. I will never forget my new friend Monisa laughing at me when I suggested she take a quick shower before we went out. She sat me down and explained about her hair. She didn’t embarrass me, or get angry. She just giggled, and taught me. Learning about black women and hair care set off a lifetime of learning for me. I realized there was so much about people and the world I did not know, and I set out to broaden my world view. I haven’t seen Monisa in years, but I often think on that day, and her infectious laughter at my ignorance. Her kindness changed the trajectory of my life and my focus. Understanding the struggles of my sisters of colour is important to me, and hair was the first step in that.

I know Canada is made to seem like liberal utopia, however it's not. I'm from the US, however I lived in Canada for 3 years, the 3 years I lived there I don't recall ever seeing black people.

Plus black hair shrinks, some days it's longer some days it's shorter, the length isn't constant. But I'm confused, are you not knowledgeable of all of this already since you are watching this video or are you only here to make passive aggressive comments implying that other races might have longer and softer hair than us but we should learn to love ours anyway and make it look "presentable" as though it in it's natural state is not already presentful enough. Thanks for posting. The problem I have with hair typing systems is that it still doesn't really let me know how to take care of my hair. When I used products for type 4 hair, I was left with breakage and mega dryness. The LOIS system doesn't even inform me what I should be using on my hair. My relaxed or pressed hair was almost to my elbows. Unfortunately, I never mastered either on my own. My natural hair is only a few inches past my collar bone. The struggle continues.

Like if we couldn't get my hair braided or whatever we temporarily put in what we call them "mabhanzi". So you'll find a lot of people here doing that. Okay with the first girl I think what she's trying to say is that she wants the versatility of straight hair, I'm too old to be on tiktok so I don't know for sure but I noticed that all the images she put up had colour and "trendy" hair cuts. She probably finds natural hair too restrictive. She's young and wants to play with her hair the way her peers do and I totally understand that. She's probably heard a million times that colouring her hair will be the death of it and that heat is the enemy so she's probably struggling with that and not everyone can just throw on a wig when they want to switch it up (who is willing to fund a 16yr old's wig habit, probably not her mom). My advice to her would be to do it anyway, I've been there, it's fun and it grows back.

More than 9 hours to braid or twist it by myself. The truth is that dealing with a 4c natural hair is though and it is not for everyone. At this point I just gave up and let the hair do its own thing because there’s no way my wrists can take the work every week.

On a good day my 4c hair wash day is 3 hours: prepoo, shampoo, deep condition/detangle, and style. I've just learned to accept it.

@@TinyyTinkerbell I just put a cheaper conditioner on my hair before I shampoo. I apply it liberally and let it sit for 10 to 20 minutes. I then detangle under running water while rinsing it out. Incredibly helpful and limits breakage and intense detangling later in the process.

I used to be that way. I thought my 4C hair was just difficult. Nope. I had to relearn HOW to shampoo the right way, HOW to condition the right way. Using quality products, which is pricier but I use way less So improved technique, and quality products brought me down to an hour and 1/2 wash days. I don't pre-poo, I don't deep condition. No need. My hair and scalp are healthy. It doesn't mat, it isn't dry, My styles last 5/7 days without me touching it, I put on a bonnet/buff at night, wake up shake and go, and after all that my detangling tine in the shower is 10 m. Once a week wash days. No protective styles, and my hair is out 24/7, 4 seasons. Take back your time Sis. It's possible.

@@reneei1940 I never said my hair is difficult - It's just time consuming. I've been natural for almost a decade and there are a two truths I've come to find: prepooing is a must and at least occasional deep conditioning is a must (my hair laughs at regular conditioners - they're simply just not penetrating enough for my hair and I use mostly very high end well formulated products. Even when I was relaxed a 3 to 5 minute conditioner didn't cut it). But my washing and conditioning only takes about an hour...its the styling. I do twist outs and "wash & go" styles. Those take time when you have extremely course and extremely nappy hair (my shrinkage is about 80%). Go ahead with your short wash day... but that's your journey, not mine. My hair has always taken time... relaxed and natural. An hour and 30 minute wash day is not my reality - unless I want to hate & damage my hair.

The last girl has thin density, coupled with tight coils. I think that’s why some 4c looks different than others bc of the density. So a thick 4c is gonna look different than a thinner 4c. I also believe there are more curl patterns than are listed from that chart.

im glad you mentioned the flaws in the 1a - 4c system. there is many issues within the system, 1. it was made by an anti black person 2. black hair cant be categorised by only a few groups. this is why there are so many arguments about it

One of which is Spanish and the other is German. This was the same school that made me stop speaking Spanish because it was "weird and unnatural" and my mom would yell at me in Spanish sometimes and it low key made it worse. As a 14 year old guy with 1a hair that first one seriously destroyed me. I have a friend with 3c hair and it’s always very amazing to experience shrinkage and how versatile her hair is. My hair isn’t boring but it’s definitely not as unique or versatile as African hair. She really needs to be exposed ti the beauty of having 4 type hair! Exactly chizi. I feel the reason why a lot of naturals believe that wash day is stressful is because we've been conditioned to think so. It doesn't have to be. For me,.I don't even have to do that every week. The onky time I spend hours on my wash day is when it's loose which is like one week ina whole month. So, I oiterally do that just once in a month and i don't find that too much. I put my hair in protective styles and when they are in P.S...wash day doesn't take as long as i doc more on shampooing my scalp and there's no detangling too.

I normally treat my wash day as a spa day especially when deep conditioning because while waiting I can do face treatments, smooth my skin and cleanse, moisturize,clean and paint my nails, try new make up looks(that's how I gave up on eye liner since every time I do I get asked about being blasian I'm not),and play calming music.

Growing up I was/still am the first girl. Definitely trying to force myself to love my hair now, but literally yes. Being mixed I had the “blackest,” hair of all my siblings. 4c when I was growing up to 4b now, my family always made sure to let me know I had the “worse” hair, and how “mixed kids aren’t supposed to have that kind of hair.” From being pulled on to laughed at, at school, home etc. it really stuck to me.

The wool/ yarn thing works so well! It's called threading. It stretches the hair for longer but maintains the "look" of the normal fro, for me at least. I love it for a big puff.

Yes Chizi, I’m not a fan of the Denman either…despite the fact that it was my mom’s go-to tool for us when we were kids. And it worked just fine back then, but not so much now 🤷🏽‍♀️ Also, I’m not even a 4c natural and CANNOT STAND when other naturals falsely claim they have 4c coils.

The front of my curls are 3c and the back is 4a. My daughter’s curls are EXACTLY like mine, but even more dense and have more shrinkage.

As an adult, I followed your advise. I went through my IG and I deleted EVERYTHING that did represent us and the whole look of my page changed! What IG suggested to me immediately changed! I love that you address the difference between the coarseness/texture and the actual curl pattern. I have fairly coarse hair but my curl patterns are 2C/3A with some random 2B areas. Texture and curl pattern are as different as the number and letter on bra sizes. LOL Thank you for covering this!!! And my heart breaks for that first lady. Pattern, type, porosity, density, and texture are the main terms I see used. I’m thinking either texture or density may be the term you’re looking for in terms of fine/medium/coarse? I’m not sure myself, especially since there is thickness of the strand and then thickness of the overall hair. You could have a thick head of hair because you have an abundance of fine strands, or you could have sparser hair but with the individual strands being of thick/coarse width. Off to watch some videos, pfft. One interesting thing I’m learning is that traits like porosity may be much more important anyways in terms of how to find what works for your hair versus exact curl pattern. That, the fact that you can naturally have multiple hair types on one head, and the fact that the chart really isn’t big enough to encompass the varieties of hair folks can have (some folks about types 4C-Z, lol, or just say “Type 4”)-all those have provided majorly helpful lightbulb moments. Wash day for me is about 3- 4hrs. Washing my hair, conditioning, and styling takes at least 4hrs. When I go to the salon it’s not much different.

Loved the video, to clear up the texture question. Texture refers to how thick or fine the actual hair strand is. Type 4 doesn’t always have to be coarse meaning thick hair stands. Some of us like myself have tight coils but fine stands. Resulting in a fine texture. Then density plays a part in how full our hair looks. You can have a head full of fine stands that are tightly coiled resembling a “coarse look” according to what society labels us but honestly mainly ppl from spanish and Asian descent with straight textures are the ones with coarse thick actual hair stands. Ppl confuse coarse with dense a lot

@7:25 THANK YOU, for talking about the actual texture of the hair Types. I feel that no one talks about this... My hair for instance is 4b/4a (size of curl) but the texture (how the hair feels and appears) is smooth, silky, and very shiny, yet thick and strong (when looking at 1 single hair strand). My texture being this way cause it to visibly look different when it's styled. For instance, when my hair is straightened it looks like a have a relaxer or it straightens rather textureless. However, some other people with type 4 hair find that when they straighten their hair it has a yaki or textured finish. This is hair texture at work and has little to do with curl pattern size (in this case). However, the looser the curl pattern naturally is, the more natural straightening appears....

I bet if she had someone help her with her hair, and teach her how to take care of it without all that expensive garbage, her next statement will be, "I LOVE being Black!" I've been rocking my REAL-Difficult-4-C hair since 2002 before most of these people ever started their natural journey and I didn't have nobody to help me and I couldn't get a perm because of the climate I moved to. The air is thin and dry here in these mountains, it made my hair shed until I finally figured things out. She's just frustrated! She'd rather have easy-to-manage hair. My daughter's friend lives with us and she has 4c hair. She keeps talking about not liking her hair, wishing it was more wavy instead of curly, etc. It makes me really sad for her because her hair is beautiful the way it is, but society has pushed and pushed for only one style of hair as acceptable to the point that kids feel like their own natural hair isn't good enough. I've been watching KZbin videos and trying to help her with her hair since 2014 and still working on trying to show her how to do natural styles that look great for her hair type.
