I know. And they leave for Aussie, and the next lot take over. In Christchurch 2022 they built a record amount of new housing 2500 around but we received 15,000 migrants!!! Migrants should have to build a home, not be allowed to buy an existing home! After 6 months, they get permanent residency, many move into state housing. This shouldn't be allowed. Our Kiwi youth who dont have another country they call home, can't start a family, because they cant buy a home, unless they want to wind up in the state area. And the governent wonder why Kiwi birth rates are down, why an Indian name is the most common baby name, and hy so many (instant Kiwis) Kiwis are migrating to Australia. Well coz they're economic. Each country is just a business opportunity. Andamy awmd their earnings back to their home countries. That doesnt help our economy.

More houses in the market = greater supply to meet demand. I didn't say anything about rents, rent will go up no matter what because landlords can and therefore will. Rising interest rates and a slump in house sales has come about because of inflation. Which as you say is a good time to buy if you have equity or managed to save the deposit now that the cost of living went up 20%, rent went up $200 per week and house prices significantly increased. How many are you looking at buying?

David is absolutely right. We have been a landlord, but it was a nightmare at times to deal with some tenants and very little legal support. We kept the rent as low as affordable but some of the tenants were still lacking appreciation not taking basic care of the property.

The problem is, there are families that move house two, three, sometimes more times in the space of a year. This is no way for children to grow up. Its very unsettling especially when they have to move schools. I think there needs to bw some kind of provision for families with children to have long term stable rentals. Whether that be provided by the government or some kind of government incentive to landlords to offer gauranteed long term rental accommodation. Yes they should be allowed to kick bad tenants out too.

This is true - not of enough people getting into homes because there are not enough houses to go around. It costs to build and costs to buy, and these two factors are related. Kiwibuild couldn't build cheaper than the lowest end of the private market, and when developers wouldn't absorb the costs so labour could deliver on its promises, the whole house of cards fell over. What labour did in villifying developers, aka potentially landlords, added to the problem - they cut off their noses to spite their face. The majority of landlords still out there are barely breaking even, and owning a rental has become more and more of a liability, and this again equals less rentals available. If you take the investors/developers and the mom and pop landlords out of the picture who is going to pay for the building of more houses? This is the question those like Labour and the G 1:24 reens fail to grasp. A country cannot borrow to house its people if there are no potential investments in the country to offer collateral. It really is not rocket science. it's just good sense!

The new insulation laws added a lot of cost to new builds which pushed prices up further and slowed new builds down creating more of a housing shortage that will in turn drive properly / rent prices higher again... That was Labour and the Green's that did that and the Press stayed silent on it.

Sorry I have lost all respects for David Seymour. I work in healthcare and Labour spent stupid money but now David Seymour is boasting how healthcare will be better based on 2017 workforce so all jobs are frozen in Health NZ even when nurses are going into retirement or maternity leave so we are acutely short of essential health professionals. I don't get how you took that from this interview. The topic is specifically around renting and increasing the number of homes for people to rent. He talked about the last 6 years and how rent had increased and the number of homes available for renters had decreased. It's clearly a supply and demand issue and not everyone is currently in the position to buy a home so the govt is making it easier for landlords to evict troublesome tenants - they still have to give them 90days notice and that then frees up that home for another family or group of people to jump into creating more rental supply and should make pricing more competitive. Home ownership is a seperate topic and if our economy is strong the opportunity for more people to buy their first homes will come.
