Interesting Rick. I remember using that stuff in the 80s. All the racehorses got ringworm so the old school trainer I worked for gave me a big white bottle with a solution he had made up and told us to put the solution on all the bare patches on the thoroughbreds, I remember the name he wrote on the bottle, Chlorhexidine solution. It dried out the ringworm, which is a fungus. Not saying Mr T has ringworm but he could have some sort of fungus hence the Chlorhexidine working. I wonder if Mr T would like boiled barley it is a miracle feed for the old horses, boil some up, add some chaff, and a good mineral mix, keeps the weight on, shine on the coat, I have never heard of a horse reacting to it because its natural unlike the commercial feeds that have a lot of sugars and crap added to them which would feed a fungus if Mr T has one in his system. Glad the Chlorhexidine is working, poor old Mr T, he is just lovely. Love how you care for your animals especially your horses.

i went through almost a full bottle of M-T-G when i treated my boy just over 2 years ago. he had it so bad and i couldnt treat it because it was getting cold, just before winter. he had it over 60% of his body and lost 200lbs very quickly, but also gradually enough that i didnt see the severity of it until my vet told me to put a blanket on him and start giving him grain because he was going to drop dead (i took pics of him that day so i would be able to see his progress of weight gain) when spring came i did a hard-core treatment and spent hours hand-grazing him it the tall grass. then i moved him to a friends house and go and se him whenever i want instead of just once a week. havent had rainrot in 2 years and he's never been that skinny since. M-T-G was my go-to product

When you use MTG, don't let him go out into the sun. It can cause sun burn. I have great luck with MTG for scratches, but I know of several people that had horses with bad reactions to the MTG. They thought it may have been the sulfur. I think the heat might add to the reaction too. I know I cannot wear anything oily and go out into the heat and sun. It breaks me out something awful. I think when you need to sweat, you don't need something blocking the pores. Horses may be the same way. Glad to learn about the Chlorexidine. I will be adding that to my arsenal. lol What a good job you are doing and thanks for letting us know the results of your experiments.

So whatever happened to Mercurochrome and Merthiolate? How do they work? Mercurochrome is a trade name for merbromin, a compound containing mercury and bromine. Merthiolate is a trade name for thimerosal, a compound containing mercury and sodium. Both these compounds kill some (but not all) disease-causing microbes by denaturing enzymes and other proteins so that the microbes' metabolism is blocked; they do this by breaking up chemical bonds in the proteins. Both have been widely used as topical antiseptics, applied to the surface of the skin of a living body. Thimerosal is still often used to help rid skin of bacteria before medical procedures. Mercurochrome is not widely used anymore. Both Mercurochrome and Merthiolate (and iodine preparations, too) sting when applied to broken skin and can interfere with healing. Experts now recommend that first aid kits contain newer antibacterial creams, especially those containing bacitracins, a class of antibacterials first produced by other microorganisms. Mecuricome is a dark red topical antiseptic containing mercury. Before the proliferation of over the counter first aid medicines, and FDA regulations which stopped its manufacture, Mecuricome was used throughout the world to treat minor cuts, scrapes, sores, and other external infectious conditions. The liquid was only sold in small quantities, since one application by Q-tip was extremely effective.

Hey and greetings all the way from Finland, Europe. This condition of Mr. T's fur got my attention because that's known as "summer eczema" here in Europe. For some reason it's more common with old and "original" breeds like our Finnhorse here in Finland, or other original breeds like Icelandic horse and so on. I guess there's some cases in Germany too... Anyway, I've and am still studying horses and am working with them too, for me it's the trotters (harness racing) that stole my heart. But don't worry, even tho the whole harness racing thing came here from the US, it's way different here and more horse-friendly. There's a vet for every race and the well-being of the horses is the main thing and the vet can ban a horse from taking a part if they feel the horse is not healthy/feeling well enough for racing. (I just recently found your channel so I don't know if you've talked about harness racing here.) -> But back to the summer eczema: when I saw Mr. T's tail, it looked so so familiar. Were I work at, there's one Finnhorse mare (3 years old by now) who I've been taking care of since she was just 1 year old. Her first summer was pain as no one knew what was going with her and she just would walk around and rub her mane and tail off and she was skinny because she just kept walking. She walked because of the bugs. Summer ezcema can be because of the sun itself but also many other things and what causes her itchiness is these bugs called "ceratopogonidae", Wikipedia tells me one of the names they're called as in the US is midgies. Maybe you mentioned them in this video? It's an oversensitivity to them, they make every horse itch but with oversensitivity it's painfully itchy. The next year the place she was at, they found out about this summer ezcema (there was also one Shetland pony with the same thing) and this natural oil they sell in Germany. I don't know if they sell outside of Europe, but it's called Wiemerskamper. They have a website too (sommerekzem.net), they used this on both and it helped them. This mare (I'm her groom) has always been very shy and dislikes being touched, but she still remembers that smell and how it maked her feel better. So for... 3 summers so far it's been every other day that I apply this oil on her. She usually doesn't like her ears to be touched but when I let her sniff my hands or the bottle, she knows what's going on and I've teached her to lower her head so I can apply the oil/salve on her ears and she just stays like that until I'm done. At the moment she rubs a bit and her tail doesn't look the best, but it could be much much worse. At least her skin hasn't been reacting which is great. Here the July seems to be the hardest time for her. The vet also recommended E-vitamin for her so she's also getting that daily. I don't know if summer ezcema is a thing in the US. I mean, is it just in some breeds? Is it in their genetics or just something that happens to some horses? Because I haven't heard of standardbreds or warmbloods (in Finland) with this condition, they're almost always the original European breeds and I think it's "common" with pony breeds too. But as I work with trotters and have heard of many of those, I still have never heard a name of a standardbred with summer ezcema, but still can name a few Finnhorses with it. But still wanted to let you know about this if the information could be useful with Mr. T. It's great if it's been helpful what you've already done with him, tho! With (Finnish) trotters it's just that it's hard to treat this condition when we are very strict about doping (not allowed at all, in any way and it's monitored very well too) and lots of medications are on the doping list. But this oil is all natural which means it has no doping time which means the horse can be treated with it even during the horse's racing season which means less pain for the horse. Most of the horses with summer ezcem are either put down or go for breeding because it's too painful without any meds/something nor could they race when they're hurting and with meds they can't race because it'd be considered as doping. It's still bit unknown condition and the oil is even less known in Finland atm, but I think more and more people are learning about this every day. So, I hope you don't mind me writing a long comment, as I really just can't write anything shortly :D But I hope all the best for you and your horses! I'll keep watching more of your videos!

Glad to hear the Chlorhexidine is working so well. It is great stuff and you cannot beat the price. On another note, don't know if anyone mentioned the products from Equiderma. Find them at equiderma (dot) com. Love their skin lotion, fly spray, and shampoo. They have other products which may interest you as well but for fly protection, the shampoo alone kept my horses fly free for days. I use the lotion on their faces in lieu of the fly spray and on their tummies as well for all those little bites and scabs that always end up there. Have seen none of that since applying the lotion. I haven't had to use it daily either. Apply it once a week and hardly a need for the fly spray at all. Pretty amazing stuff. It seemed expensive when I made my purchase even with a coupon, but based on the notion that a little goes a long way, it is pretty economical. I would not hesitate to use their other products. I use their dog shampoo/conditioner/lotion as well and it seems to repel fleas well and does not dry out their skin. Nor do the horse products. Just wanted to mention it in case you need yet another something to check out for future use.

Rick , terrific news that you yourself did the research and found a solution to Tanna's misery . If I am not mistaken ... I believe that midges like mosquitos have an aquatic larval stage ? Well Rick this was another asthma induced video but I always use my inhaler before watching now lol. The brown bottle stuff was methiolate ? not sure of spelling but close and it made you not tell until you were later inspected and any wounds found lol. We then had Mercurochrome same bottle same glass applicator but no burning. They were pulled because of their mercury content. Kids these days have such kid friendly no set you on fire like being laid wide open was not painful enough even if you were going to the doctor was not traumatic enough because our doctor even came to your house and did not leave without giving you a shot of penicillin in your but cheeks. Younger people these days i am 65 also don't know the pain and bruising the good ole dull needles caused because they were not disposable and used until you could feel the flesh tear as they were jammed in. I did read it was replaced by pure iodine which still lites you up. I have also read and saw that the purple spray stuff is of no value in any way and just a waste of money. We are very concerned about sweet ole Mr T and Buddy but also Mokey and the ruler of Gore Acres of course you Rick. You bring so much laughter but also so much information on how to care for horses and all animals gently and for all horse owners and especially the young this is so important and we thank you Rick.

How often did you use the Chlorhexidine? Once a day? And It sounds like you left it on. Did not rinse off? I have just started using this as well and very hopeful results. I used the MTG for a while and though the areas got better, they stopped short of totally healing. So, because of this video, I bought a gallon of the Chlorhexidine from Tractor Supply. Not only is it much more pleasant to use, it seems to be working well. I wipe the area off with antibacterial hand wipes, then follow up with a paper towel soaked in the chorhexidine solution. I have not been rinsing and I usually leave it to dry on its own. But have dried it a couple of times after 5 or 10 minutes. The problem is at the back of his elbows of his front legs, right against his body. So there are wrinkles there and I had some concerns about leaving it wet. But it seems to dry ok anyway. It is always dry as a bone when I check him the next morning. Thanks for the video and your experience with using it.

You might want to see if you can put diamaetious earth on horses, if you rub it in on their skin and hair it should repel flys and it kills worms if you mix a little bit up in their food once in a while, and I know it kills mites on chickens and you can rub firewood ash on their skin too for mites, I believe, theres a natural lime in the firewood ash I think. It's worth a try.

Hey rick I do a little different to kill fungus. Especially on mud fever and when horses has an out break of ringworm. It’s Milton baby sanitizer spray. It’s anti bacterial viral and fungal. May sound crazy as designed to sterilise baby’s bottles. But it sure worked well. That’s what the brand name is here in the uk but I guess you must have the same thing in America under another brand name. Killing the ringworm fungus it made it clear up faster than the vets stuff. I just sprayed it on neat. The horses didn’t seem to find it irritating unlike what the vet supplied. Sometimes using baby talc powder on the horses heels helped two as it’s a drying against. Crazy to think what’s safe on a baby is effective on horses. But least as it’s made for sterilising baby stuff you haven’t got to worry about it containing harsh chemicals.

Anything beyond getting scratched by a mesquite thorn, or things like that they go to the vet. I don't have the equipment, or knowledge to do most of the things lile that. We havr nasty cacti and mesquite here. I also get mine from my vet, then dilute appropriately. The Chlorhexidine you can get from stores has stuff in it that isn't good for cats.

Mine too!! But I don't remember it hurting. It healed things like Nothing else!! Probably straight up mercury poison. LOL. OOhh but we survived!!!

Very familiar with this product, used it a lot with dogs and cats when I worked as vet technician :) Glad to hear it's working! Just a tip though don't use it in the ears without having I checked by the vet first, as it can damage the inner ear :)

I was told not to use on cats if they lick it , it can kill them.
@annem18167 жыл бұрын
Think Like A Horse Edit: Licking it and consuming it is different. Cats are insane in the fant that that they dont want anything on them and in their fur. Well then I must have killed many cats in my time xD Used it all the time for both cuts and to sterilize an area before surgery. Of course, it was washed off a bit by the time the cats could lick themselfs again, at least before a surgery. It's probably due to the strength of your mixture there, the concentration of it? , maybe new research has come out? Of course, you should just follow what you've been told by the ones you buy it from, best not to take any chances. It could be something the manufacturer have it mixed with that can kill cats and perhaps not the chlorhexidine itself. Many possibilites, but yeah follow the advice you've been given about it, don't use it on the cat(hopefully he won't need anything either). But it was news to me, at least.

Don't hate me and I can be wrong but I notice Mr T has a descended belly. He can have fungal internally. Sorry if I'm late. Probiotics and more. Cut rich foods and sugary treats.

It appears so, really good improvement on Buddy he gets it worse and I only put it on once a day, if it was bad and I did it twice a day probably better.

One of my horses has sweet itch, it is chronic, and it happens every year. Vets just put him on Prednisone and keep him on it all summer. I worry about the damage it causes to his internal organs, so I am not using it this year. A friend of mine said her vet suggested Benedryl @ 12 of the 25mg tablets once a day for 5 to 7 days. That gets rid of the hives, until I stop the treatment. I believe it is caused by the insects and the white clover. We have tons of white clover :-( I have tried soooo many things over the past 4 years and have not found anything that works. I will try the Chlorhexidine solution.

Prednisone should not be used for long periods. Good u r trying to find an alternative.

I know, the vet started him at a high dose, tapered it off over 10 days, and then prescribed a low dose till the end of summer. It didn't even help all that much.

Careful with blue kote, it can stain easily 🙄. For skin and hair growth I recommend Bag Balm.

I was going to suggest Clorhex on another of your related videos, then saw this one. Clorhex is magic, whenever my horse gets rain rot or itch I wash him with head & shoulders, I let the skin soak then scrape off as many scabs as possible, then rinse throughly with Clorhex. When he dries I spread coconut oil to protect his skin, sometimes with tea tree oil. So far I’ve only had to do that once, I just spray daily with Clorhex until clear.

Good heavens, just look up Chlorhexidine. It doesn't matter where you buy it. Amazon probably has it if you buy things from Amazon.

😂😂😂😂 Rick im not surprised you dont know what a midge is. It wont be that because you dont get them where you are. Theyre small flying insects and they give a nasty bite and a lot of horses here have quite severe allergic reactions to the point some horses will buck and jump around as theyre really good at biting onto the horse in a spot the horse cant shake it off. The reactions also cause extreme itching. some horses have to have their coat clipped out because of it and some cant be ridden as its not fair they end up so itchy they will get down and roll on concrete to try to releive it. (You say it like midget but without the T). Like i said though they do not live where you are.
@toniknight827 жыл бұрын
If you did live in england though you would definately get problems from them. They like moisture so your pond would attract them. I once rode a horse and kept mine at a place that was built over a really old lake and that place was terrible for them. The place stunk of fly spray constantly because of it and youd literally be batting them off the horse to get them off (its best to kill them while theyre latched on as they dont go away either if you jst knock them off). It gets to the point the horses will come up to you and rub you until you slap the midges dead lol they figure out pretty quick that if you do that it goes away.

Oh and how often do you put the Chlorhexidine on Mr T? His mane probably won't start growing back until he is all healed up. :o)
@ThinkLikeAHorse7 жыл бұрын
I put it on once a day, sure I could do it twice a day but not that bad now and no need. I wanted to start slow in case it caused a reaction.
@BelindaTN7 жыл бұрын
Ok. I do the same when trying something new on animals or humans. I want to try it on scratches. The MTG works ok, but I don't like using it, because it is soooooo messy. And I really like that it is working once a day. I also plan on trying the powder sulfur idea. for me and the animals. I am wondering how it would be to put in the dogs and cat fur. For fleas and ticks. Where do you get your sulfur at?

by the way, i was one of those people who wondered what that white mark was. i just thought he had been born with it, hell, you never know. horses sometimes are born with weird marks on them in weird patterns, i thought he may've been i dunno part paint. that is until somebody on here told me it was a brand that marked him as a mustang. I didn't know they branded them like that. i always thought they branded them on their hip not on their necks. Seems a bit cruel to brand them on their necks but that's me. I'd think it would hurt much less doing it somewhere else

I don't like the mtg. rain rot is not a fungus it's bacterial almost any mild antiseptic shampoo works but it must be done daily yep 7 days in. a row. follow instructions leave in for recommended time. The eqyss micro tech works well very mild but don't use with iodine product swelling will occur read directions. I made that error. that cannon keratosis is hard to treat also. Excalibur softens it nicely. yep the sheath cleaner has tea tree oil I think. also mild will try to find the product you mentioned. Thanks for Sharing. Happy healing to Mr T.
