I remember Chobits. I picked it up from the library as a kid not realizing it was for a more mature audience. Or maybe I was a teen? I don’t remember. Still, it was an important manga to me. Along with many other influences in my childhood, Chobits started my thoughts on what true romantic love is to me. It made me yearn for a pure love with my own “Someone Just For Me”...

I first watched Chobits in the mid 2000s, and started collecting the manga shortly afterwards(unfortunately the bookstore I bought them at went out of business before I got them all). It was one of the few Anime that has really stuck out to me, along with Cowboy Bebop, Rurouni Kenshin, and .hack//Sign, as being must watch anime series of the time. There aren't only female Persocoms, there are quite a few background male Persocoms (one of which being in the train scene). There were only 2 Chobits, both of which were made to be daughters for their creators because they didn't have their own. (A problem in Japanese society is a lack of having children) There are real world reasons why Hideki may be more likely to interact with female Persocms, him being male meaning he pays more attention to females or his friends being male and being more likely to have female Persocoms. Remember that Japan has been slowly sinking into a more isolated, single lifestyle over the past 20 years. And a major part of the plot of Chobits is that many people choose to own (and have feelings for) their own personal AI companions rather than have human relationships. So having a male protagonist means exploring the story through a male perspective. As for the same-sex and diversity parts of the criticism. We're talking about Japan, a place that still is very selective with who they allow to immigrate into their country 20 years later and doesn't have the over-the-top Pride of western cultures. While it would have been nice to see a sequal/spin-off with a different protagonist to explore other aspects of the themes. I feel like if you were to try and do it with a same-sex relationship, the story would have had to have been different. Maybe a sequel where a human buys a same-sex Persocom to avoid the emotional attachment. And the Persocom has feelings for them after the events of Chobits, and that leads to the human realizing that love doesn't care about gender or human/AI. But that's a different story, and injecting it into Chobits would take away from the simple beauty that makes it special. And it was written and illustrated by an all female team, Chobits wasn't written for a male audience. Chi's transformation over the story is what the viewer/reader was meant to identify. With Chi learning that her feelings are real, and valid, and unlocking that ability for all other Persocoms, having a female Persocom being created to have feelings and emotions makes more sense thematically.

Now I need to see Chobits, you should talk about Nana next, one of the best mature anime discussing young adult life with a realistic point of veiw. The protagonists do not allways take the best decisions, displaying self-destructive behaviors, parasitic attitudes, codependant relationships, with a constant quest for significance and realization, in a neverending pursuit of happiness, a crude portrait of life

Chobits came out when I was in elementary school. Watching the series again as an adult is strange but in a good way. Chobits was way ahead of its time just like Robbin William's Bicentennial Man. I bring up Bicentennial man because they are related in that now in the Age of (Ultron :P) AI these shows are extremely relevant. This is a show I wouldn't show to teenagers but I suppose since teenagers are having access to AI's that perhaps it is something important to talk about because of the ChatGPT and eventually the talk about human to machine relationship. For those who do not know Bicentennial man it is about an android. I really don't want to say anymore because saying anything about it gives too much away about the underlying themes. I can say that this movie is important that implicitly relates to the Turing test.

i'm glad u made the point that the persocoms are subservient. chobits is so good and its themes are so rich and interesting, but the contradiction of persocoms falling in love but being programmed to obey doesn't really get commented on a lot. the anime explores so many facets of the relationship between humans and machines but leaves the fact that machines are not really able to say no to humans, which is a bit disappointing.

I liked the anime, but loved the manga. I read the manga first and it lead me to the anime. The manga did a much better job at exploring the topics discussed in this video and didn't drop the ball. The anime tried to live up to the manga but didn't do a good job. The manga was more adult in it's tone while the anime was geared towards a younger audience, replacing potential adult themes with humor. The manga did a great job fully exploring the emotional and physical aspects of a potential romance between a human and a persicom. The anime toughed on these topics but was geared more for a younger audience, so left much to be desired. Much of the musical score was forgettable, but there were a few great songs that stuck with me.

I disagree about the only female persocom statements in this. For the relevance of the plot and because a lot of this is about Hideki, his male friends have female persocoms, but in a lot of the panning shots when setting mood you see male persocoms. Now the Chobits themselves were both female, but that's because Hibiya created them like that as her husband and her daughters.

It made dating very hard because obviously there are not many men that want ab obedient woman today.. they want the bitchy sassy type… I’ve found a man to be patient and wait for me to understand I can’t lie it’s frustrating at times because I’d love to just know but I am chi haha I loved this anime.
