The most fascinating thing to me about Chobits is the way it predicted the culture. A lot of aspects of our culture such as isolation, low birth rates, a declining workforce, all of these things that in the 2000s seemed completely wild.

What I found interesting about Chobits is that it not only explores Human->AI relationships (between Ueda and his PersoCom wife), but also Human->Human relationships (between Shinbo and Shimizu) and to some extent even between AI->AI (between Dita and Jima)

I think Chobits is perhaps the most realistic prediction of how humanlike robots are going to turn out. The show depicted it as just another thing, with ups and downs alike. And that's usually how new stuff works out. A lot of people are raising alarms about this kind of technology, worried that they'll bring about the end of human relations and maybe even take over the world and wipe us out, but I think the reality will be a lot more mundane like Chobits depicts it. They weren't just for s3x, they fulfilled many other functions and replaced personal computers, fulfilling all the things PCs used to do. (They were even called "persocoms".) Some people had their lives ruined by them, some people fell in love with them, but they didn't cause humans to altogether lose interest in relationships with other living humans. Nor did they turn evil and try to get rid of humans. And I think that's a rational way to depict it. Human nature is enduring, culture is enduring, humanity isn't going to be ruined by them, we'll just adjust. They'll be another thing that *can* cause harm but can also be used responsibly. And there will be some who are harmed by it, but to most people they will just be convenient, fun, or merely inconsequential. Much like alcohol, video games and w33d. We will develop new cultural norms around them, we will have new conventions for how to use them responsibly and what to avoid, and some people will use them for therapeutic purposes, while other people will seek therapy to help them "quit" using their robots. How any one person will interact with them, for better or worse, is going to depend on what kind of person they are, how they perceive the world, and what they believe.

The detachment and dating scene, this so called it. How relationships and love have become quick commodification that people pick up and drop, as its easy come, easy go. How connected we are, and how long distance relationships have become easier and how loving someone you can't touch, or see, or feel can be tangible, and real. Theres so much they call. I love it. Greatest manga of all time. The anime is pretty sweet, but the manga is top notch. Incredible. So perfectly paced.

you are absolutely right about this. People in the AI space are obsessed with boring business saas apps. But this is the real application. It is mostly a UX problem at this point.

As for robotics, the self-contained units aren't there yet. But for pretty much everything else, AI and the like, the portent from 20+ years ago is close to spot on.
@jebes909090Ай бұрын
self contained units will probably never get 'there' as you can only make batteries so good and we're pretty close to the limit currently. like those tesla bots probably only have 15 minutes of autonomy before they have to charge again. even if you made the batteries 4x as good(which is probably no realistic), you only get an hour of autonomy and then would probably take an hour or two to charge. god knows what your electric bill would be for owning one of those.

As someone who listens to the theme song by Round House & Nino everyday (plus various remixes), I think about its predictions quite a bit and the implications of its world & persocoms don’t seem so alien these days…strangely enough. 🤔 The Spike Jonze movie, Her (w/ ScarJo & Joaquin Phoenix), came out a decade later and became what people think about when it comes to the “love in the future” genre…that and Blade Runner 2049. The latter I think is more Frank & Honest about how AI catering to our needs will inevitably leave us hollow and we saw this start to play out irl once “AI Chat Bot Girlfriends/Boyfriends” by Replika, Chai, and others started to gain infamy by how they’re psychologically impairing their users and making them a bit more antisocial and mistrusting of their fellow man. However, Chobits really takes that and pairs it with a physical Android body and can make for some interesting yet dark implications for how the more lonely & socially detached of us out there. The ending, of course, is meant to be hopeful about what kind of future it’ll bring us…but it then begs the question of whether or not it’ll just make us more untrusting of humans or one day turn a corner and bridge the gap that’s unfortunately seemingly insurmountable to pass. Great Video, from one Old Weeb to another!
