We used to have great school dinners at Newbiggin secondary school in the late 60’s to 1970. We had chocolate custard with our chocolate cake lol

This used to be my favourite dessert at school, I had been looking for a recipe for years, I don’t know how i stumbled across your post but I’m glad I did. It is superb, I don’t bother with the custard just the cake, I have made it once a week for the last few weeks. I have had to halve the recipe as it is so moreish and the wife is on a diet, so there is only me too eat it lol…. I never had that at school but do remember chocolate tray bake sponge with icing on top and pink custard which was lovely. I’ve seen packets of pink custard mix in the supermarket but haven’t tried it.

I used to love this in Doggie (West Cornforth) School. some of you're recipes are really taking me back, please keep em coming, any chance you could do the chocolate flapjack with the white sauce, i remember that, Im pretty sure it was a minty kinda flavour sauce but i could be wrong. I swear i always remember it a sponge cake. Perhaps i'm getting muddled with the ginger cake. Its the butterscotch tart that was my favourite favourite.I loved school dinners. The Backyard chef always uses metal on metal. Thanks for the memories 🤗

We had chocolate slab with banana, synthetic because of rationing, custard. Date roly-poly or jam sponge with whatever fruit came from the local farm. 70 years back; I could smell it and remember the queues as we had to wash up too, and learn to use the sterilizer How times change. i enjoyed that - I never had concrete cake but did have 'old school cake' ie cake with hundreds and thousands on top of icing and jam and coconut cake with white, yellow or pink custard - as well as milk puddings. I really look forward to your videos which are lovely to watch so thank you x

I was a dinner lady. Never made pink custard, it was always strawberry sauce. Easily 1 tablespoon cornflour mixed with 1 tablespoons granulated sugar mixed with a bit of milk taken from a pint. Heat rest of milk and add cornflour slurry add a few drops red colouring (cochineal) and a few drops strawberry flavouring stirring till consistency of thick double cream.

Just subscribed last night and I’m loving the videos and the nostalgia. I was in the minority among my friends because I loved school dinners. They would sneak what they couldn’t eat on to my plate and I was just lucky enough that I was really skinny back then in the mid 70’s and could eat without gaining any weight….Aww the good old days🥲 The only two things from school dinners that I ever had a problem with were the skin that would form on the custard and I don’t know if other school served these but…Butter Beans🤢For some reason the primary school I attended in Scotland had an obsession with the bloody things and served them almost daily! Children would be crying all over the dining hall because they had to at least try a bit before they could leave the table. I remember the pink and yellow custard but not a mint version. It doesn’t sound too appetising but I know a lot of food would taste much better than it looked….apart from butter beans that is😂 (Sorry for the long message)

My nan was the head cook at a local school in the 60's/70's we were brought up on the very best of proper school dinners. We loved all of the dinners. And I mean all of them. Legendry meals for two lads who lost their dad when he was 28 to a brain tumour. We thrived.

When I was working in school dinners we used to use strawberry blamange powder for the custard ( served hot of course otherwise it sets.) we used to cut the cake into potions whilst still warm, it didn’t break the wrists when cutting it then. 😂

I'm gunna be controversial here: School Puddings never really interested me, it was always about the Dinners for me! The Sausage meat Pie in particular 😋 Was l the only kid that loved school Greens?? I remember swapping my Mash for my mate's Greens. Mainly cos back in 1970 you dare not attempt to leave any of your Dinner for fear the Dinner Ladies would tell you off!! Besides, if you didn't eat your Dinner, you might not get your Puddings!😉 We were the lucky generation when our School Meals were cooked from scratch. I bet there are tons drooling over this! 😋

Well another first for me, never made a cake with plain flour, most of my recipes are from the good old Be Ro book, I have one in black and white which was my nanas, all stained especially the cake pages. and some new ones of course. I am too old and don't think that I had this at school for dinners. I will bake this tomorrow for the kids I am sure they will love it they like brownies and I think maybe this is more like a brownie than a cake. Another great idea Mand and Ian love as ever Maggie

I suppose you could say it is closer to a brownie,but the eggs make a big difference to the texture.Brownies are cake like if you over mix them,and fudge like if you just lightly mix the wet(melted chocolate,and butter) cooled then add eggs to it,then the sugar,and finely the plain flour,and salt,mixing only enough to incorporate the flour.This will be much harder,and dryer,hence the custard.

This is amazing... recently I told some friends that the best dessert I ever had in school was hard chocolate cake with blue custard... 62 years ago!. I never had it again because I had to leave to go to a boys' school at age 7 because.... well, too risky to leave boys and girls together in school after age 7. Welcome to Irish education! OMG I left school in 1963 and not had it since then. I've got a big lead lump in the pit of my stomach. That's when school dinners were Proper school dinners, not some politically correct dieticians idea of what school dinners should be. The custard was always a bit more pink in our school and there were arguments over who got the skin. We were on tables of 8 kids and the servers were two kids each week, rotating weekly. No standing in a queue at a hatch. Do you remember Semolina pud with a dolop of jam ? or Jam Roly Poly made with Suet pastry and custard. I need to lie down after all that 🤣🤣, someone pass the Rennies.

It wasn’t like that at all when I was young. It was a gorgeous soft sponge about 3-4 inches deep tin. The pink custard was more of a blancmange and proper pink. Like Birds Custard which you make in a jug, before adding to hot milk. No such thing back then as instant custard. I had some in a container similar to it a few years ago. Lasted ages. lol I’m quite a bit older than you two so times must have changed when you had this. Never heard to it as concrete because it definitely wasn’t. Was gorgeous xx
