A few years ago, I wrote a paper analyzing Lully’s Dies Irae setting. The paper was accepted at a conference and all but then the pandemic happened. Regardless, this is one of the best performances I have seen of this piece. Lully carefully chose to set the sections of the text that are in first person in the solo choir. He set the text much like it were the text of a staged work. Every section of the setting uses some form of text painting. Stile concitato in the confutatis, using 3/4 for “holy” or blessed subjects and common or cut time for the earthly and sinful, etc… He also frequently uses a trio of voices in the solo choir, depending on the subject of the text. Lully’s sensitivity to the text is clear in this performance. Look at the “Rex tremendae” where the choir literally announces the king with the tutti chords on the word “Rex.” This comes across in the performance. Furthermore, the solo choir sections feel like operatic recit, as they really should. I found the “Recordare” felt like the impassioned appeal for salvation that it should be. 19/20!
