I am an old man who discovered Mink DeVille thanks to a friend who had just bought "Le chat bleu" (only LPs back then, early 1980's). I did not connect so soon with it but I did. Willy has been a lifetime musical companion from then on and I am glad to see videos of him, even after his departure, RIP. One of the real good / bad guys.

Almost exactly the same history as myself. A friend loved hunted down no one else had heard of and one night he played “Le chat blue”. I was hooked from then on. Brilliant album, amazing artist. I’ve loved his music ever since. Unfortunately I never got to see him live but now I can watch him live on KZbin.

I gave up on that career path when I hit that wall. And they still cranked out some of the best stuff of the era. Just incredible, thanks for the hard work and great times. God bless! @pjbscript. I agree. If it were just for the money, he could have turned out crap like so many. It takes a ton of money just to move the band and play the venue. Some in the band don't realize that and become bitter. Willy always had the best band. But Willy was the only one who had that amazing voice.

Warum bekomme ich nach so vielen Jahren immer noch Gänsehaut, wenn ich Freddy's Gitarre höre? Und es animiert mich immer noch zu tanzen. I was lucky to see him live with Mink Deville in San Francisco many years ago and have loved him ever since. He absorbed so many influences, from Cajun to Spanish to R&B, and made something of his own. And such a moving singer. He also had a heroin problem and a sad personal life. He was only 58 when he died. But the music was so incredible.

In the early 80’s I saw a German TV registration of Willy at Rockpalast and I was flabbergasted how he is living the music. I had to wait until the mid 90’s to see him live in Eindhoven and it was stunning how he plays his music in entire simplicity. No distractions only Willy doing his music.

In my twenties I bought the first two Mink DeVille albums and still have them. Listening to him would evoke early Van Morrison, Springsteen, Southside Johnny in their formative years. And Yes, Willy deserves R&R Hall of Fame recognition! Soul charisma.

When I lived in NYC in the 80's I saw two concerts back to back. The first was The Rolling Stones in a huge stadium, distant, faceless, empty. The next night was Willy Deville at the intimate Bottom Line. One was a consumer product. Willy was the true artist.

Isn’t it sad that this immense talent was never really allowed to blossom here in the US? Maybe allowed is the wrong word, but I find it hard to believe he wasn’t so much better known. What an amazing singer/songwriter/performer. And yes, Freddy Koella and the band are simply sublime. That guitar! Ye gods… I “discovered Willy when I was about 58, and have enjoyed him in the two + years since, so huge thank you to the poster. I listen to this song over and over, I love it so much. I saw Mink Deville play with my buddies Cap'n Swing (before they became the Cars) in Boston at the Rat a few times in mid 70s. Willie and his band was awewome, and played this great song and such cool music, so ahead of his time. Special times and those 2 bands made it even more so. And we partied hard.

He could have done Pirates of the Caribbean, the musical. Saw him live at some open air venue in Hollywood in maybe 74 or 75. It was a radio station promotion and free. First time hearing him and WOW was he great. One of those etched in your mind memories.

I didn't get to see Willy perform on stage but I did get to see and I heard him play was riding in the country roads Carrier Mississippi in my pickup truck playing the guitar and singing writing song....I enjoyed those days he was my friend
