Actually, with the third type of choking (which I have experienced far too many times), there is no air sound at all. You are simply asleep, then snatching into a bolt upright position trying your damnedest to draw air but you can't. You might make some weird clicking sounds with your tongue in your panic as you beat the hell out of your bedmate (if you have one), trying to wake them to help you. You know you are dying and it is terrifying. If this happens often enough, like me, you will develop a cold sweat inducing phobia of sleep. If you are lucky, the spasm will stop and you will guzzle air like a fiend. If you are not lucky... I don't know what happens then. Do you die or will you lose all muscle tone causing the spasm stop when you pass out from asphyxiation? This is a question maybe the doctor can answer? I have seen countless doctors over the years and it has been reduced with a Nissen 180 fundoplication, hernia repair (the hernia has returned bigger than before), PPI meds and CPAP equipment...but it is still happening. I have found no actual cure after 22 years, and now have full blown Barret's that is monitored frequently for any progression in dysplasia. I have changed doctors 3 times and am planning to change for a 4th to MD Anderson for management as they manage other precancerous changes elsewhere in my body.
