Perhaps the peak of North Korea and its Jucheism, or at least its grand finale before the big crash. For the people of the DPRK it was still a time of some prosperity and most importantly hope. Even though the economy had essentially stagnated since the mid 1970s the general populace were still far better off than they had been in decades before, or the following decades. Barely a half century earlier the Korean people had lived repressed under Imperial Japan, in conditions comparative to feudal serfs. And after the Japanese occupation would come even worse times with the Korean War. Years of fighting and destruction, millions dead and essentially the entire country in ruins from warfare and constant bombings. And then, almost miraculously, a renaissance and economic boom in the 50s, 60s and early 70s. Rapid industrialisation, rising standards of living, education and health care. Outpacing their southern neighbours who were also fraught with constant instability, coups and political violence. And even though the economy slumped from the mid 70s, they general population still had a decent standard of living, not at all uncomparable to South Korea. The 1988 celebrations depicted here (the 40th anniversary) and the World Festival of Yourh and Students in 1989 were extravagant spectacles, to show the best that DPRK could offer. And in just a few years it would all have turned to ashes. The collapse of the Communist Bloc, disintegration of the Soviet Union and liberalisation of China (as well as the debts from hosting said festivals) essentially broke North Korea and its economy. Gone were the secure and stable post-war times, with the 90s came rapid economic decline, famines, rolling and constant blackouts, a crisis not seen in the country since the Korean War. Even if North Korea eventually recovered somewhat, not even today it has the same standard of living as in 1989, and any illusions or hope for a better future or dreams of being equal with the South are gone.

North Korea doesnt need to match South Koreas economy to succeed in beating them. In fact its not desirable to aspire to be like the south. Rampant consumeristic culture, overworking and anti family and anti children environment which ensures the korean conflict will be resolved by the Souths demographic collapse. (Which will also sink its economy).

@@CobraRedstone but NK also has a declining birthrate and its population is already the half of SK, of course SK has ten billions of economical and societal problems it needs to solve before worrying about NK as well, but it's clear both nation are collapsing and in crisis, Korean history is complex and forever marked by japanese imperialism and their roles in the Cold War, there is no "better" half, just a population who is still dealing with a century of colonialism and dictatorships

@@libertarian_Pol_PotЭто важно кто настоящий.
