LYRICS: INTRO Welcome, ladies, gentlemen and the technicolor rainbow in between to the show of a lifetime! First up on the docket this evening, a tale of duality and condemnation; virtue and vice. A tale of a good man’s sorrow and a bad one’s ferity. A tale of lamentation, resignation, indignation and contempt. A tale of bargaining and compromise… or the distinct lack thereof. This is The Ballad of Dr. Jekyll & The Mr. Hyde Jive. THE BALLAD OF DR. JEKYLL Is it worth all the ringing? Is it worth all the pain? Is it worth the pretending? The fear? The disdain? Is it worth the shift in countenance just to live how I’d like? Is it worth the split in conscience just to sate what’s inside? Is it really still working, this thin, weak facade? Can I really still maintain my emotional guard? My costume is tearing. My patience is wearing. My ears begin to bleed as I feel the monster staring. And the fear contorts ‘to anger as I begin to see red. And the anger grows remorseful as I return, retiring to bed. This sad, seeping tragedy inside my head. And there’s so much to see here, so much more to do. Yet I can’t help but relinquish control off to you. Perhaps our God in Heaven, thought to be kind and just isn’t quite as forgiving as we once thought he was. This vile ebullition of liquor, tincture and salt seems to be my seldom let from this hellish assault. You sit there and tempt me, overgrowing with envy like a jealous, callous moss, determined to drain me till I’m empty. And I know I shouldn’t feed you, but somehow I feel the need to, like a deviant or a drunkard condemned by oaths they cannot see through. And lo, here I stand, half a man. So if you can, please take this phial from my hand before I change my mind and let the freak upon this land. I’ve tried this before, to keep a lock upon this door, but every night I sleep myself I awake as him once more. I’ve lied and I’ve bargained to keep these shackles hardened, but the creature lain in wait will never cease his barrage, and I’ve begun to grow short in both temperance and stores since my salt I so rely on seems to be tainted and impure. So I laugh at the irony. And I know there’s one single, lonesome cure, but if it takes Mr. Hyde with me, then I’m glad to hang. THE MR. HYDE JIVE You’d better run. You’d better hide. You’d better sneak away from the creature that’s inside. All it takes is one stray, unfortunate night to lay the foundation for the tomb in which you’ll lie. I know it seems so fun to spend all of your time trapped within the entropy you’ve created in your mind, but please do heed my warning, son. You’re not so different than I. The day that you succumb to me is the day that we both die. (Laughter) Is that what you wanna hear? Come on, man, no need to fear. You’ve lived your life so clean and coddled, so don’t act so queer. Or perhaps act even more so. Put your hand up on his torso. Put your lips up to the bottle and let the liquid run its course. Though, perhaps you’re Dr. Right? If so, then I’ll be Mr. Wrong. Wanton with the wicked deeds. Come on! You’ve had your song. They say that when a good man’s eyelids rain, a bad one’s drink is poured. So say hello to the main event and say goodbye to the before. Pick up the pace, paint desire on your face and see just how quickly they fall! The dishonourable Edward Hyde; The King of Vice that can’t be retconned. The backside of the coin the weak are too afraid to bet on. Flip it in the air and see just which way the wind blows, then throw it in the slots and see how far your luck goes. Succumb to the song of the sinner and see the sunset slowly sink down to show that the sonnet’s still not done yet. To think that they thought that that theologist could stop this. HA! I promise not one orison could stop this hotness. Hey… I’m just being honest. But please, forgive me if I’m sounding nonsensical. It’s just that it’s hard to remain sensible when my thoughts verge on unethical. The things I think are reprehensible! Oh, yes, my mind’s eye sides with the incomprehensible. An addict combating a lack of sobriety. His drink of choice? A mental breakdown of the existential variety. This lackadaisical cage he calls ‘light compliance,’ see, is yet another lie to try to disguise the key. But there’s no better way to be than basal, with no agency. Your past and present faces me with unyielding vacancy. My atrophy besteth thee with incredible efficacy, so dwell not on history and look to where you want to be. And he’ll say that that’s far, far, far, far, far, far away from me, but don’t crawl away. Don’t run and hide. Don’t play the hero, no, you know you won’t survive. He did this to himself, man. I’m just the other side. For every Henry in this world, there’s an Edward stuck behind. So play your songs and roll the dice. Try your hand at impulse and lay the other on someone nice. Feed the demon a bite of freedom, just a morsel now and then will do. And if you sense dissension, please, do pay attention, ‘cos you know that demon is you. It hurts to see that rotten beast, but more than it hurts to think does it hurt when it’s unleashed. So keep it docile. Keep it on your side, lest you look upon its wrath from the back of your own mind. You know it’s true. Don’t avert your eyes. This is just what happens when you split virtue from vice. Death, despair, decay will extract what’s left of life. And right when you need a doctor, I’ll be there to twist the knife. BARGAINING/COMPROMISE Is it worth all the ringing? Is it worth all the pain? Is it worth the pretending? The fear? The disdain? Is it worth it to imagine what I’m feeling won’t last? Is it hard to adjust to the regrets of the past? Is it really still working, the thin, weak facade? Can I really still maintain my emotional guard? My costume is tearing. My patience is wearing. My ears begin to bleed as I feel the monster staring. And the fear converts to anger as I begin to see red. And the anger turns to sadness as my stomach fills with dread. And it feels like the agony will never end. But there’s so much to see now, so much more to do. There’s no more time to be regretting how we made it through. The sun will keep on rising, and fading at dusk, so it’s worth the compromising just to see it come up. Perhaps there is more here than once it did seem. More joy to be discovered, more information to glean. The world will keep on spinning when I’m frowning or I’m grinning, when I’m surrounded or alone, when I’m praying or I’m sinning. So I’ve made my decision. No, I won’t be playing victim to the thoughts that keep on morphing and distorting my vision. This is where I take my final stand. So if you can, please take this bottle from my hand before I change my mind and sacrifice these new plans. I’ve tried this before, to put a bandage on this sore, but every time it starts to rain, it just falls back to the floor. Sometimes all it takes is some time and some patience to heal and start again; to rearrange all the pieces. So you can say the world is biased to justify your compliance, but the ringing in my ears isn’t half as deafening as your silence. So I’ll take my stand in an attempt to cure this cursed virus. So take my hand. Hold it till the end.

While the music itself slaps, i think my favorite part is how Chonny clearly understands the meaning behind the original story and its various interpretations. A critique of societal standards for acceptable behavior, a biting analogy for alcoholism, Mr. Hyde not really being a separate entity from Jekyll but just the other side of himself he blames for the acts he commits while under the influence of the so-called potion. The Mr. hyde jive works really well in that it doesnt let Jekyll retort, unlike many modern adaptations of the story that let the two sides converse as if they truly were two separate individuals. Instead it is more like Mr. Hyde is the devil on Jekyll's shoulder, trying to seduce him into indulging his base urges again. Hyde opens the song posing as a monster, only to shift the tempo and show that he's just the side of Jekyll that doesn't give a damn about anything but having a good time, even ridiculing Jekyll for blaming Hyde when, in truth, its been himself all along. 10/10, one of the best interpretations of the story ive seen in ages and they fucking slap

I’m going to yell, actually. Conceptually the original novella is one of my favorite texts hands down in terms of its themes of duality and good and evil, etc. I’ll admit I was super happy to see allusions to them in your previous work on the CCC, so to see this fully fledged out into its own little thing makes me so so happy! And of course it’s a banger as always. You keep doing you! Edit: Oh, by the by- thank you for acknowledging the queer reading of the novel in the lyrics for Hyde’s bit. It’s a pleasant surprise considering queer classic literature readings and theory are often mocked or dismissed. I was very pleasantly surprised 🥺

GOD i love this so much, the production, the lyrics (the wording is so true to the book omfg), and this makes it all the more exciting because the past songs referenced jekyll and hyde too and the soul eclectic and the heart acoustic particularly reminded me of them

This is splendid! It's a bummer that this likely won't get the attention of your "covers", but regardless of the views, these are some sick songs. I quite enjoy your style, both in the feel of your songs and the words you frequently implement into your works. Your work is very distinct and recognizable, so just know that you've quickly become a favorite of many of us.

@EnderKingDubs Жыл бұрын
God, I absolutely adore this album for a multitude of reasons. Of course, it's clear the Mr. Hyde Jive is the most popular of the bunch, with Ballad of Dr. Jekyll coming off as somewhat flowery and underwhelming at first; while Bargaining is shoved all the way at the back after the instrumentals (which is a huge shame), but as I listened to everything more closely, I realized just how much I related to the story being told here. Back around the middle of 2020 I started to have these depressive breaks that were a culmination of a series of mistakes I had made over the previous 5 years with regard to how I valued myself, my work, and my friendships, and these breaks resulted in me becoming overly bitter, spiteful, and full of hate (both for myself and others). Every time that these happened, I didn't feel like myself, I felt like I was screaming at myself from inside my own head to stop hurting everyone I cared about. That was essentially my Hyde. As things got worse and I alienated many of my best friends, these emotions turned into a self-perpetuating cycle of bitterness and anger where I would do something to drive people away and then I would feel vindicated in the irrational thought that none of them had ever liked me and weren't worth my time. But at the same time, those powerful emotions would fade and I would be left wondering why I had let myself make things so much worse. With time, those strong emotions faded completely to a feeling of complete emptiness and nothingness where I accepted that everything had been my fault. But then, after that brief moment of clarity, my irrational mind decided that it might be worth ending it all so that I could avoid hurting any of the people who had somehow managed to stick around in my general circle and make up for how I had hurt everyone else (not a rational thought, clearly). And so I had to fight those thoughts for a long time. By around the late summer of 2021 I had managed to put myself back together enough to get a job and start creating things again. I couldn't do what I had done before as the burnout that had been a contributor to my emotional breaks had been massive and left me creatively crippled, but I picked up a pen (a keyboard really) and started working on my writing (the only thing I hadn't pursued creatively). That, a few other good choices I had made in my miasma of depression and the people who had stuck around me saved my life. I came out of it all stronger, having made my "final stand", alive, and better for it. I still have a lot that I want to do, I'm still working on improving, and I still owe some apologies, even if I can't begin to figure out how to give them, but those feelings or the lack of them didn't last. Nothing really lasts, even the worst moment of your life (and that moment was certainly in that whole mess) won't last, and there's comfort in that. That's how I read this. Jekyll tried to put-off, bury, or kill the parts of himself that he despised in any way he could, but he couldn't get rid of it. In the end, trying to bury it, made it nearly unbearable and he even began to wonder if Hyde was who he really was and Jekyll was just a kindly façade, but he managed to persevere, pulling through, alive and whole again, or at least, ready to get on the road to becoming whole again. Accepting all parts of himself. And that's why while Hyde Jive is an absolute BOP, Bargaining is my favorite song of the bunch. It takes the brighter tone of Ballad of Dr. Jekyll with its much darker undertones and turns it into a more reminiscent and loving tune with a melancholic undertone and much brighter message that I relate to deeply and a message that anyone struggling with depression and mental health should hear and take to heart.

Chonny... I thought you were taking a break... I did not expect a 20 minute video THREE WEEKS LATER. I really did think I was gonna be able to escape hyperfixating on your content. But it seems you are not letting me do that. I am not complaining in the slightest. I don't think I've ever gotten as into someone's music as I have with your silly little tunes. But in all seriousness, this is amazing. I can't wait to see what the rest of the album is like!
