Dave “Chook” Henwood is one of New Zealand’s most decorated and respected police officers. Chook retired after 47 years in South Auckland as a Detective Sergeant with three silver merit awards. He now has a book out all about his remarkable life and career called “Unmasking Monsters.”
In this conversation, Chook opens up about some of the significant cases he worked on, including his interactions with two of New Zealand’s most evil men- Joseph Thompson and Malcom Rewa. And why he always thought Teina Pora was an innocent man.
Then we get into YOUR questions: Should police be armed, his thoughts on youth crime and how to fix it, thoughts for young Kiwis thinking about joining the police, advice for parents to keep their kids safe and so much more.
Chook is a man who has spent his life doing his best to keep his community safe and make New Zealand a better place and I can’t thank him enough for his time.
If you like this podcast and you are keen to learn more about this great New Zealander and his career, look for the book by Chook (unintentional rhyme there): "Unmasking Monsters."

I had the absolute privilege of working with DS Henwood on Op Park as a fresh faced Det Constable and was fortunate to be on the Operation when Thompson was identified and later arrested, and was given the opportunity to assist with the interviews. Op Park was definitely a highlight of my career. Chook, great to see you on the podcast and I will be getting a copy of your book....thank you for your decades of service keeping Kiwis safe and bringing those that have done wrong to justice. You are right, it's a different world out there now.

Hello everyone, I’m Gabriel, a Brazilian living in Brazil. Since always, I’ve had a passion and felt a calling in life to serve and protect. However, Brazil is going through a sad process of deterioration in moral and ethical values across all three spheres of society - political, judicial, and social. The lack of these values has caused me to no longer identify with my homeland. The more I study about New Zealand, the more I see a society rich in moral values and good customs, a richness that is unprecedented. One day, if it is God’s will, I would love to serve and protect your society, even if it means giving my own life. While studying English, I came across this incredible podcast by Dom, and Mr Henwood’s story is extraordinary. It truly makes a difference in the lives of the people in Auckland. In my current reality, this feels like a distant dream, but it is a necessary one, as my duty as a father is to raise a good human being, a better human being. However, as many studies show, the environment has an influence. My dream is to serve and protect a society with strong values - perhaps one day, New Zealand. Apologies for the outburst.

Fascinating man to listen to . this man took 2 bad cats in Rewa and Thompson of our streets . I came across Malcolm Rewa amongst others whilst working for the MOJ as a court register . Mr Henwood is so right in describing that horrid thing . great interview Dom !!.

These podcasts are so damn good Dom! You have a remarkable talent for putting people at ease and having a conversation with them. Something a lot of hotshot interviewers are unable to do.

Great interview! and so insightful. I would love if you could have a different detective, lawyer etc. whos dealt with financial criminals and the kind of crimes the "Wealthy" have committed and that doesn't get published in the news, seems fitting going off the recent death of Pauline Hanna, crimes and living situations we would never imagine that happen in those wealthy neighborhoods. Keep up the great work!

Hey Dom,the talking about the use of Cops,i think that media being lazy ,there used to be standards, not so now ,maybe so some research on failing standards of communication that is pulling society? Respect has been lost on many sides .

Nothing like a good phone-book beating or being hosed down by the power hose during winter in the Otahuhu station cells. Old school justice.

The term genocide carries a specific legal definition under international law, as outlined in the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. According to this convention, genocide involves acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group, as such. The acts specified include: 1. Killing members of the group. 2. Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group. 3. Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part. 4. Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group. 5. Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Love this! I did have Anna Mowbray on a few weeks ago. Also got an ep next week with a young lady making 50k a month on Only Fans. Who would you like to hear from? Throw some names at me and I'll do my best (I think I know the answers though- hard work, perseverance and a bit of luck)

They're obviously not gonna tell you what it actually takes to get there just the usual BS motivational speakers spue out they'll never admit they've Fd over some people/agreements as a necessary means to becoming one of the wealthiest plus they know how to work the system to their advantage their financial literacy is something not taught in schools that much I do know white collar, blue collar crime the works the wealthiest know a dirty thing or 2 at making it big ain't gonna dismiss there's proper earned wealth here in NZ but very few if we are talking about the wealthiest
