So you have a miniature in your not so miniature mini collection and you want to know how to paint tartan on it. I understand. I have those too. Actually I have a lot of those, too many in fact. But lets not mention them again. They make me nervous. Painting tartan can be a challenge, as with all worthwhile pursuits, it rarely comes easy. But there are things you can do to make painting tartan more straight forward. Breaking a tartan pattern down into simple steps is the key to getting a good result. If you can paint Ork checks on a mini, you can probably paint tartan too. The hardest part about it is the lining, but even that can be simplified. So, get your paints ready, point your brushes, don your Tam 'o Shanter bunnet and lets paint some tartan on miniatures.

This could not have been better timing! I've just ordered a mini for my party's fighter, that needs to have a tartan kilt. (He's a bear, he needs to wear clothes so people know not to hunt him!) And as I've never painted character minis before, I've been intimidated to try this, but not anymore. Thank you!

Me too! Practicing a few lines on your thumbnail or on a piece of paper helps quite a bit.

Are there any "rules" about color combinations? I picked three random ones I used elsewhere in my diorama and the pattern looked OK for a first try but I was wondering if there is anything one should consider. The first thing my kids asked was "Is he [the goblin] Scottish?"😂
