@KujoPainting6 жыл бұрын
I use lots of brushes but the one in the video is a Raphael 8404 number 1. Quite nice, little bigger than the Winsor & Newtons. The smaller one was a WAMP fine detail. I used to use W&N quite a lot but I've been kinda moving away from them lately, I've found their quality can be a bit hit and miss. Recently I've mostly been using a mix of the element games line, wamp and raphael.

Brilliant. Been looking to up my brush game recently and there is so much info out there it can be hard to know what to go for. I'll give the Raphael a go. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.

Around 10:20, you're doing the edge highlighting on his back thingy. I've tried numerous brands of sable brush, from S7, Rosemary & Co, Raphael, etc, but with each brush I tried I got more convinced that I didn't know how to do edge highlighting and never would. I've been getting better at blends, using wet blending, loaded brush, even feathering, but my edges and details have been getting worse. Then I looked at some older models, with some very basic but functional edge highlights, which I did without thinking about it, using cheap synthetic brushes. Have you heard of anyone who prefers nylon to sable? Or am I just being weird? Or am I actually going crazy / getting shaky in my old age? (I'm 39.)
@KujoPainting6 жыл бұрын
Try to use the side of the brush. I use the side very close to the tip so there's less surface area. Then I just glance the brush against the edge very lightly. I usually do practice strokes where I'm essentially painting the air above the edge, then I gradually lower it until I'm just touching the edge and no more. James Wappell uses pretty cheap brushes, should be able to do edges with both sable and synthetic. Hope it's not down to age as we're the same age (ish). :P
@Mikey__R6 жыл бұрын
@@KujoPainting I've already bought the magnifier goggles you suggested! Don't worry, I'll figure it out. BTW, I gave up trying to watch James paint. He is such a strange genius, I feel that mortals like us have very little to learn from his approach. To all the world it looks like he stabs his brush on for a bit, then wipes some paint off with a sponge or a finger, and then, masterpiece.
@KujoPainting6 жыл бұрын
@@Mikey__R haha yeah, he works his models like a canvas painter, it's an interesting approach, I'm still baffled how he picks out the details like that though. He's for sure the Bob Ross of the mini painting world. I half expect him to bust out a palette knife at times. :)

These are just SO BEAUTIFUL!! I'm artistic, and a little OCD (maybe a lot🤣). What size figures are you generally painting? I'm working with the tiny 25mm figures. Is it possible to get 25mm figures to look anywhere this good? Your techniques will help me a lot, but before I over invest in a LOT of paints and money, I'm wondering if it's worth it to buy any extensive color palette for 25mm, or just get the basics and do a lot of mixing? Thanks! Also: do you ever use any kind of protective coat, a finisher or varnish kind of thing? If so, what do you like or recommend?
@KujoPainting3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Generally I paint models on the small side around 25-28mm. I enjoy the challenge of building up details on a small surface. Occasionally I'll do something larger like a bust, they present a different kind of challenge but give you more scope to introduce subtleties and more fleshed out textures. I don't think you need to invest in a lot of paints to get good results. Sometimes I try to limit myself to a minimal number of paints. So say 3 or 4 pots and use mixing to get different colours and nuances. Having more pre mixed colours available can be nice but it can also over complicate things and give you a form of analysis paralysis while you try to work out which paint to use. I sometimes use varnish to protect paint jobs if they're going to be used in a gaming setting but if they're for display I usually don't bother. Testors dullcoat and ak super matt are both really good. I'd avoid the brush on varnishes as they have a higher tendency to cloud up when they dry.

I don't know either! Could be the accent or maybe KZbin just hates me. But seriously 22k is a lot of people, I'm lucky to have that. Glad you like the video, cheers!

Brilliant stuff. Shame it takes both time and skill. Useless for 99.99999999% of 40k players :(
