hi, I'm trying to decide between Green Giant, American Pillar and North Pole Arborvitaes. I want a privacy hedge, something fast growing, and can take heat in summer (sometimes into the high 90's *F) and can take long, cold winters (sometimes into the single digit *F temps). And occasionally, 2 or 3 times a year we get massive wind storms that only last 5 to 15 minutes but blows shingles off the roof and blasts paint off the sides of houses. But the issue is the fence line is 150 ft long so I cannot afford to buy $40 plants. What Arborvitae do you recommend and who sells small plants in bulk - I'm sure I will need at least 30 plants, perhaps a lot more depending on how wide they spread.
@pwcolorchoice3 жыл бұрын
Hello! Based on the information you provided, I would suggest going with North Pole arborvitae. There is a program called "Full Speed A-Hedge" that helps you learn more about that plant and how to be successful growing a hedge with it. On this link below you can scroll to the bottom and see the various places that sell the plant and find which would work best for you :) You can just click the different logos which will take you to the specific North Pole product on each website. www.fullspeedahedge.com/about-the-plant.html

Hello, I have the same issue as you. 150 ft of noisy neighbors and the city wont let me put a privacy fence up. Looking for tall fast growing thick arborvitae but cant afford $40 a plant. Did You discover a place to get Green Giant, American Pillar or North Pole arborvitae in bulk? I'm located in southern Wisconsin. THANKS!
@sphillips63572 жыл бұрын
@@ChristiBringe hi, I'm still trying to decide which way I want to go. Keep looking and I'm sure you will find Green Giants sold inexpensively in bulk. But I'd rather not have a plant that grows so wide. I did find one place that sells the American Pillar for $20 each, but that is still rather expensive for me. Finding inexpensive American Pillars in bulk has been a challenge. I don't know about the North Pole arborvitaes as I can't find anything published on how fast they grow. This past summer I bought 4 Green Giant arborvitae's to see how well they would do in my area and in my bad soil. What I don't like about them is they turn a dark bronze color in the winter. I kind of wanted something that would look green in the winter too. I have about one more month of winter freezing night time temps then I'll see how long it takes them to turn green again. Another possibility I was thinking about is buying one large American Pillar then breaking it down into a lot of cuttings. There are several you tube videos on growing these evergreens from cuttings. The videos make it look easy. But I don't know if that is legal as these plants are patented. I'm sure it would be illegal to sell those cuttings, but I don't know about doing it to your own tree for your own use. I hope someone who knows plant laws can let me know. Thanks Christi and let me know what you decide to do.

You can trim up the bottom without harming the plant, but it won't grow back. Is there another way you could try and expose the wasps?

In my area of CT, the deer basically eliminate all Emerald Green arbs, but pretty much leave Green Giants alone. Do you have a sense for how susceptible the North Pole and Spring Grove Arbs are to deer and/or rabbits ? They look like good alternatives in locations where Green Giants would be too big.
@pwcolorchoice2 жыл бұрын
They are great alternatives for people looking for arborvitaes that are more narrow than Green Giant. But unfortunately, the deer do tend to browse those plants.

I planted 2 tater tots (cutest plant), but they are now covered with 3 feet of snow!!! All the snow from our driveway was pushed onto these little guys. Will they survive this? If they do, should I relocate them so this doesn't happen again? Maybe snow will just be a blanket for them.
@pwcolorchoice3 жыл бұрын
Yes the plants will survive :) As for moving the plants, I would monitor how they look in spring, if there are some broken branches or disfigurement then I'd suggest moving them to be proactive and ensure they won't have any branches broken in the future. In most cases snow does act as a sort of protective blanket but snow being piled on by a snow plot adds more risk to the plant.

You did not include how TALL the larger ones grow. I need privacy from my neighbor's yard, but cannot have them grow into the electrical wires. Which ones would best suit that application?
@pwcolorchoice3 жыл бұрын
Some electrical wires can be higher than others, so ultimately it would depend on how high those are. North pole gets to be 10-15' high, Polar Gold gets to be 12-15' high, and Fluffy gets to be 5-10' high. So given that, Fluffy may be the right option for you!
