I planted 20 Arborvitate and they're still babies. The 10 that I just planted have a bit of browning, but the ones I planted in summer are very healthy. I wished I knew how they'll shaped out at maturity. Thank you for sharing

Have the Golden Globe arborvitae. Stunning! One question, please: Have never found information about its longevity in Zone 5-b. Before adding more, would love to know if these will reside in the landscape for years like the yews, which I also love.

We are making an evergreen garden with Arborvitaes (American Pillar) and Blue Arrow junipers. We recently added Forever Goldys - love their yellow color. Now we would like to add something that is 3' and red/burgundy to accent the Goldys. We would like evergreen so we have color through the winter. We're in zone 6, central Ohio. Can you provide some suggestions?

Hey sista…. What is the winter color of the green giant and the spring grove? And do you use the iron-tone with all 3 applications (spring, mid summer, late fall) of pant-tone? Thanks for another great informative video!!
@PetittiGardenCenters
@PetittiGardenCenters Жыл бұрын
The winter color of green varieties of Western Arborvitaes is a bronzish-green hue. They do green up again pretty quickly in late winter/early spring. And, they don't brown out in the middle and shed as much as Eastern Arbs (Thuja occidentalis) in the fall. Apply Iron-tone at least once per growing season, usually paired with the spring feeding of Plant-tone. It can be applied more but not necessary unless you see green foliage turning yellow.

@@PetittiGardenCenters Thank you so much for the quick response….I couldn’t find a video anywhere that mentioned what the winter color was on those 2 specific types of arbs. We’ve got 12 green giants (4-5’) and 6 spring groves (9-12’) all planted less than a year ago in our garden, and this was our first winter for them zone 6b….wanted to make sure they were coloring up properly this winter. And now I know they are THANK YOU AGAIN!!! Have always used the plant tone, but I definitely think the addition of iron tone in spring will be just what they all need!!!

My question is got them all green now bottom of a few are turning brown look there dying . I got small around ones. Been a year that I planted them . Should I dig up and move them?
@PetittiGardenCenters
@PetittiGardenCenters 3 жыл бұрын
Browning at the base of Arbs is typically due too wet soil or too dry soil. In NE Ohio we have clay soil that usually fluctuates from one to the other extreme. You can try digging one Arb up to see what the conditions are around the root system and in the hole. We typically recommend planting plants slightly higher than the ground level so they don't sit in water. Amending clay soil with organic matter like compost or planting mix. We recommend feeding them 3x per year with Plant-tone & Iron-tone spring, midsummer & late fall. Mulching 2" around them also retains soil moisture and insulates roots over the winter. Irrigate 1" per week, one time, deeply, if no precipitation has occurred. Prune to remove brown areas when new foliage flushes out. Do this late spring/early summer.

Which variety of Arborvitae do I buy for a screen, whose max height is around 10 ~12 feet ( give or take) 6 or more hours of full sun. plus deer & bag worm resistant? Is there such a variety to fit all those preferences?
@PetittiGardenCenters
@PetittiGardenCenters Жыл бұрын
The more deer resistant, adaptive to soil & sun conditions, and reduced bagworm susceptibility are Western Arbs, Thuja plicata. There are a few varieties available that are upright, pyramidal forms for screening, but 'Forever Goldy' is the only one that falls into your size requirements: shop.petittigardencenter.com/products/95/western-arborvitae-forever-goldy-trade--3-gallon-2725.html. 'Northern Spire' is the most compact green Western Arb: shop.petittigardencenter.com/products/95/western-arborvitae--northern-spire--7-gallon-9788.html 'Green Giant' & 'Spring Grove' would eventually need to be tipped and pruned yearly growing up around 30' tall unpruned.

I planted 32 emerald greens along the perimeter of my yard this spring. Most are doing great, but we are having issues with a few. The arbs getting partial east sun with full west sun are appearing to be getting sun burnt on the west side. Any tips?
@PetittiGardenCenters
@PetittiGardenCenters 2 жыл бұрын
Sun scald can occur in the intense western or southern exposure on Arbs. Overhead watering instead of bottom watering can cause scald on foliage, refracting through water droplets too. Continue to water deeply, 1 inch of water 1x per week. You can trim in late July to remove dry foliage. Check soil drainage. Make sure they are not standing in water.

@@PetittiGardenCenters good to know, thanks! We installed a drip system a week ago so hoping that starts helping. We planted the 32 arbs (7 gal containers/ 5-6ft tall) ~6 weeks ago. Our soil has decent drainage with little to no pooling from the 1.5 inches of rain we got on Monday. I’ve checked the soil under the mulch of a few arbs and can stick my finger in the soil down to the 2nd knuckle with force. Doesn’t look like I’ll need to test the drip system this week. Lastly we are in zone 5

can the emerald green Arborvitae be planted in a pot? how long can they live in a pot? if it can do well in a pot, does the roots have to be cut back every few years so they can continue living in a pot? thank you, appreciate the video.
@PetittiGardenCenters
@PetittiGardenCenters 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Arbs can be planted in pots that are large with good drainage. The Arbs can survive 2-3 years in a pot with out much winter protection (place them in a cold garage or next to a protected side of the home and mulch the pots) but when the roots take up all the soil space, they need to be removed, root pruned in spring and repotted with fresh soil in the containers.

Columnar evergreen plant material 10' and under is fairly unique. Fortunately the more compact Arb varieties take well to topping and keeping them at the height you wish. 'Emerald Green' and 'North Pole' are the best of the greens. 'Forever Goldy' is the best of the yellow foliage types. Holly 'Castle Wall' & 'Castle Spire' are columnar, but fairly slow growing. Other columnar options you may want to consider: 'Fineline' Buckthorn, 'Purple Pillar' Hibiscus & 'Laced Up' Elderberry.

Yes, just make sure you are using sterilized cutting tools. Clean with rubbing alcohol or 10% bleach solution. Treat for yellow jackets in the evening when they are least active. The dust works best for in ground bees: shop.petittigardencenter.com/products/51/spider---ground-bee-killer-10oz-dust-1520.html

Only one variety worth growing….emerald green. Large varieties develop multiple leaders and split over time. Bag worms love them. In my opinion, a low class evergreen suitable to only the cookie cutter housing development landscape.
