The best speakers are the ones you know. As long as they can reproduce enough of the frequency range to make decisions then you can mix on nearly anything. Don't let the 'quality' of your speakers stop you making music.

if they're not detailed you can't hear nuances in your audio. simple as that. sure, you can know what to look for but you won't be able to get it perfect sounding. you won't be able to hear the slight issues in your audio.

I used Yamaha HS80M for like 7 years now and few months back I bought Focal CMS 40. I must say that they are more precise than the Yamaha's and I can hear more details on them even though they are 4" woofer monitors. So... Focal all the way! For me, at least. :)

I have Genelec's 8040's for around 8yrs now. I love them so much! Couldn't be happier! They sound great and the build quality is great as well! They are expensive, i paid €1840 (around the same in $) but totally worth it! I don't feel the need to add extra speakers or even a sub. I want extra speakers just because i like to listen loud to music 😂 But that's a totally other discussion. (and luxury problem i guess) 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yes, it's not about how great it sounds in your room, it's about knowing how it translates to other speakers and ways to listen to your music, headphones and different types of speakers, you want all that listen to your music to get a great experience but of course sound really great on good speakers. How to get there? I want the speakers, if it sounds great on these it will sound great on most speakers monitors.

This was edifying. I’m still about 10 months from making any purchases. The idea that I should go to the shop and actually listen to the gear I need isn’t really pushed by a lot of reviewers. Thanks for making that clear before I spend all that money on what should be a purchase that lasts me years

8:10 I think the part of larger monitors even for small rooms that I like is that if they have a coaxial midrange driver and tweeter, then extra bass drivers help you not need a subwoofer down to ~30hz.

Great video Jon! The 3 you selected are all good but I highly recommend the HEDD TYPE 07 monitors. I don't know if you remember but back in December I told you in an email that I bought these as my new monitors. They are made by the same guy who was the main man at Adams. They are also very precise and transparent but also very importantly they are good on the ears in regards to fatigue. They are also very well priced! I did a blind test between the HEDD TYPE 07s and a pair of Genelec monitors that were over twice the price in a very well treated studio in central London and most of us couldn't tell which sounded better. They certainly impressed everyone there, especially at that price point. Really the best thing to do is what Jon is doing, narrow down your choices then select what performs best in your well acoustically treated studio. Hope this helps someone!

@DjKProductions

Jon Sine as far as I can remember the HEDD Type 07s are the biggest in that model range. The bigger ones are a different model. They are meant to be great but I have no first hand experience with them or their 3 way versions. Going by the size of your room, I think that the HEDD Type 07s would be more than good enough, especially at that price. You could go for the bigger ones but I think that will be overkill and a lot more expensive. The cone on the 7 inch woofers on the Type 07s are made from a special composition of materials that combine to give u the low frequencies equivalent to larger monitors/woofers. So u can push them quite hard and still maintain quality accurate low frequencies. If you go to the forum gearslutz, someone on there did a review between the Adams A77x (3 way) and the HEDD Type 07s, the HEDD did very well. But at the end of the day everyone's ears and rooms are different. I agree when you say you can't tell anyone which are the best monitors to get, we all have to do our own research and tests ourselves.

Do you think the HEDD Type 07 is better than Neumann KH 80 DSP and Neumann KH 120 A?
@DjKProductions
@DjKProductions 6 жыл бұрын
Aram Aršakuni YES, in the store. I've heard that the HEDD Type 07s, which are made by the guy Heinz, who was at Adams for many years, which make great monitors, and has now started his own company HEDD, Heinz electrodynamic designs, is underpricing these to sell them at a very competitive price. Some guy on gearslutz did a comparison between the HEDD TYPE 07s and the Adam A77x, u should read the review. It's even did well against some genelics which were twice the price. In this price bracket I don't think you're going to get better monitors than the HEDD TYPE 07s. I'm so happy with them that I recommend them to anyone who asks

I use mackie C4 monitors and have recieved compliments on my mix's. Obviously these are by no means professional and you could probably get better monitors for a similar price but they work for me. A big thing i think though is learning how your speakers REALLY sound, comparing your mixes to songs you like on your monitors and using different speakers (headphones, car). This i've found goes for pretty much all monitors.

Hi, I am looking for a bit of advice. I am an aspiring dance music producer and I am planning on improving my production this year and taking it all a bit more seriously and potentially making it into a living. My current monitor is set up as follows. I have a set of Rokit 5 Rpg3 and a Focusrite 2i2. I am currently in the market for a better / second set of monitors for another reference, however, I am and not sure what to get. This is what I am looking to achieve in my studio. I want to be able to switch between 2 sets of monitors, dim the volume, mute the volume and also switch between stereo and mono and alos switch between headphones. Also, I would like the new set of monitors to complement the frequency of my rockits I currently have, as in, when I flick between the 2 sets of monitors they don't sound much the same, but rather have different curses on the spectrum, etc for mixing like a car/iPhone/studio/club, etc I have a DJ setup that I would like to channel through the same 2 sets of speakers which I am currently doing by using 1/4 jacks through the line inputs on the Focusrite 2i2. I also have a Rode NT1 but I don't use it much only when recording other Artists as I don't sing myself. My budget is about €500. And I am currently considering the following: Option 1 Keeping my current set up and buying 2 x Yamaha HS 7 or Yamaha HS 7 MP (Not sure of the difference) Mackie Big Knob Passive Option 2 Selling my Focusrite 2i2 Mackie Big Knob Studio 2 x Yamaha HS 7 or Yamaha HS 7 MP (Not sure of the difference) Option 3 Either one of the interface options above but changing the monitors to 2 x Adam T7V or similar? Thanks and looking forward to hearing what you guys think.

Have you considered ordering a pair of KRK's to test in your studio, and then select the ones that sound best for you to purchase? Let me know if you find a better sound on any other speakers over the KRK RP8-G3 Rokit Powered 8. I wish I was in the store you were in, so that I can hear all the various speakers with my own ears! He is completely wrong about the Genelecs. In the studios I have worked in the Genelec 1032B are the best period unless you go very high end and are lucky enough to work with the $100,000 Wilson audio watt puppies (These are the best speakers on planet earth, The clarity and sound placement is second to none. it is sound in 3D) Wilson and Genelec ($8,000 a piece.) are out of most people's price range. KRK rokit 8's are amazing for the price. For the dollar amount they are probably the best. If you want to spend a little less the M-audio BX8a are a great choice as well. Both of these monitors are very good if you have a tight budget. The Yamaha's hs8's are good for flat response mixing. They are a little too bright for me but they are fairly accurate for the price. This is very helpful when miking but they don't sound as good as other monitors. The focal monitors are really good for a mid range price. I like the sound of the mackie hr824 the color is a little heavy on the base but they sound fantastic for the mid range price.

Hi Jon. Great video as always. Focal makes great monitor speakers. But I must say something. In my opinion, you made a mistake by telling to go for a bigger woofer instead of a smaller one. The case is that woofersize in studio monitors is irrelevant. Let me explain why. If a producer has a studio with the right size monitors with a big woofer, the chances are that the producer over saturated the kick and bass line. Even if it sounds good on the monitors with big woofers, you get a problem when playing the track in a club environment. Given the fact that the bass is heavy enough and good mixed on the monitors, in much bigger and larger PA systems in clubs, the bass would be too loud. This can have a serious impact on the track a producer made. It can even get so loud in the lower octaves, that the overwhelming amount of bass presses so much, you even can't here the high notes. Well, this is my opinion, but it is not a rule (even for EDM producers) to buy a particular brand of speakers and choosing a bigger woofer size. That makes no sense, Jon. No offense though. The video is a good guideline for buying monitors. And visiting a music store is always a good thing to do. I like it also very much for checking out new gear. Even playing some synths. And finally I want to say, keep up going with the daily blogs. Great and useful to watch. Btw, your music is great 👍 Friendly regards, Emiel
@Jonsine
@Jonsine 6 жыл бұрын
a bigger woofer doesn't mean more bass it means it goes down lower this way you can judge If you have some unwanted frequencies around let's say 40hz and cut them. if your speaker doesn't go that low and you can't hear the mud in the low end you might not cut it and leave it in taking away energy and room in the mix and sound bad on big club systems. having more bass on a studio speaker wouldn't make any sense they are spouses to be flat as flat as possible no Mather the woofer size
@emiel333
@emiel333 6 жыл бұрын
Jon Sine thanks for the explanation. I know that a larger woofer handles low frequencies better. And I also know that the purpose of a studio monitor is to represent a flat frequency response. In the latter, it's almost impossible to get a real flat response from such a monitor speaker. Unless it is used in a testlab from manufacturers with no reverb or sound coming from outside the room. A so called silence room. What I do is switch between monitor and my HD 25 from sennheiser. On the headphone, the flat response is better and it delivers low frequencies. Just to enhance my mixes. And your also right regarding a bigger woofer doesn't mean more bass. For my home theater set-up I bought a new active sub last year. It took me several weeks to fine tune the sub in a way that the bass frequencies are not saturated and give a nicer ambience to soundstage in music listening from cd and vinyl. Thanks for the reply, Jon! I appreciate it very much! Nice evening and the vlog of today was also nice to see, great camera!
@cl2nden1st89
@cl2nden1st89 5 жыл бұрын
At least with a bigger woofer you can simply roll off the low end DIGITALLY if you are having problems in your room. You can add the low end frequencies back when simply jamming or when you move to a bigger room. No need to buy another pair for change in circumstance.

Animal Oc below 500 hz the sound really is dominated by room modes and not so much the speaker anymore. On paper it’s very flat but in an actual room, likely not so much. That’s why the very low end should be judged in a largish very-well treated room. Smaller rooms with not enough tuned traps e.g. below 200 hz your your room modes are still going to dominate over the speakers accuracy regardless

What do you think about the KRK Rokit 5 and Yamaha HS5? I'm considering getting a pair of either the Yamahas or KRKs, so I could really need some help choosing between them. I mostly produce EDM by the way.

This is the musicstore in clogne, and I was a bit disappointed once I have visited them a couple of weeks ago, as they have missed to demo state of the art speakers (e.g latest Adams S series). Service was also poor and we purchased our e-drum at session music in Frankfurt. They are top of the line......

Great video Jon. *I am very keen to purchase the Adam A7X.* Do you think they would be more versatile pair of monitors that can cover more genres of music (like cinematic, orchestral music) than say, KRK Rokits and Yamaha HS series? I'm looking forward to your findings.

Jon, did you get a chance to listen to the ADAM F7s? I didn't see them there. I ask, because I actually liked those ones, compared to the A7X, which I thought was strange, as the A7X are more expensive. I figured they'd had been better.

I believe as long as you work with samples (erg. computerized music) you don´t need expensive speakers, any cheap studio monitor or even good HiFi speakers will do. But if you mix and master real music, played by real instruments get the best studio monitors you can afford.

yes but don't spend to much cause it than get's a bit pointless to have very very accurate speakers and a bad room go to max 500€ than fix your room before getting better spekaers

Nice vid, but I disagree with the statement that a studio reference monitor can be 'too accurate.' I don't think that mixing is the time to 'have fun.' We need a flat, accurate reference to do our best work. 'Colored' speakers may be more fun to listen to, to dance to, but they're not good mixing tools.

I buy based on locality and what I want to sound like. If they say german speakers are the best that may be true but that doesn't mean I want a german twinge on my design of sound so I may go with something else purely based on the principle of the matter. You make music through what you work with and the products do add something artificial to the game that results in giving that company and that country more control over the sound of the audio world. You could say the world sounds very german if Adam audio is the way you go and so on as it goes or if all these Nordic people say you have bad speakers because they are Yamaha it's really them hating on the Japanese techniques of hearing and frequency translation. It's an artificial taste that adds elements of those countries to your music making.
