LOVE my Ram 60/40 gate especially if loading something heavy and if you need to get it past the gate to be able to close it. Huge benefit! It’s also super easy to step up with the deployable step that’s hidden under the bumper. And don’t forget, it works both ways…. 60/40 split or it lowers conventionally if you need the length for a longer load. It’s the best of both worlds.

The GM wins the tailgate area because of the built in steps in the bumper. The multi tailgate is just icing. The ford step you have to pay for and its too confounded for what you get.

I never leave my ball in the hitch, I smacked my shins too many times with it. The multi-pro is awesome, worth every penny and use it all the time. The bottom step makes a great place to sit as well. The multi pro on the 3/4 ton short box, the load stop is just over 8ft. It just makes the bed so much easier to use, you won’t regret getting it if you can.

In all fairness you need to consider that the ford handle is in the middle of the tail gate if you are loading and walking up and down you have to maneuver around the pull arm. The GMC is off to the side which makes it easier when loading and un-loading you don't have a trip hazard. The GMC is the better tailgate you have a ton more options, the ford only has one function.

I have a GMC Denali with the multipro tailgate on an 8' bed. I also have an axillary fuel tank. The load stop with tailgate down gives me just over 8' behind the fuel tank. I use it all the time to haul plywood or drywall. These tailgates have another big issue. If you haul dirt or crushed stone, you must cover the hinge areas or you will get crushed stone in the tailgate that you cannot get out. The tailgate on my 2500 is high enough to go over the trailer hitch instead of hitting like it does on a 1500.

As it stands, I'm with your Dad on those 2 tailgates. GM vs Ford. But with the Ram opening old school, I'd pick that one since they now have the auxiliary step moved to where it is closer to the center of the tailgate. And you'd be able to reach in even further towards the cargo area.

I like the fact that you don't need to open the tonneau cover to pull out the handle on the Ford.

Though I suppose if you're getting into the bed, you'd probably need to open the cover anyway.

I like them all...hope the war continues You really have think about what application you are going to use the most. For a dirt biker the gm one is awesome Pushing your bike up and down a ramp with that large step right there is seamless. Then you have that large bench seat for getting changed putting all your gear on or off...

If you would have had a comparable Ford model which would have been lower vs your 450..your dad would have had an even easier time getting in. I wish Ford would figure out their system using the Ram doors. That would be the perfect set up for me.

One position you didn't show is having the tonneau cover closed with the tailgate up and just drop the upper section leaving the cargo stop down. You can have long pieces hanging out with the tonneau cover closed.

Greetings from Cheyenne Mountain 🏔️ GM is the clear winner. LED lights & optional stereo are awesome. A grab handle would be a nice touch for GM to add. Ford has a patent on a new multi function tailgate design that I haven’t seen in production…yet To be continued!

I remember when GM put out commercials making fun of Ford's tailgate step. Now they try to outdo Ford. I prefer the Ford step because it seems more simple in terms of moving parts. Ford's tailgate also seems it would be lighter and cheaper to replace.

I have to admit, I like the multi pro tailgate other than the heft of it. I understand that with all the mechanics in there, it adds weight. The other problem I have ran into is with the cold weather here in Alaska, the latches don't always work, either opening or re-latching. I've actually had to break out a torch to just barely heat the latches up to allow the tailgate to open or shut. As for the hitch problem, it hasn't really been a problem for me as I don't really like to leave a hitch in the receiver anyway. Less to run your shins into.

Son, "reach in and grab the block." Dad uses a tape measure to make it easy. Old guy experience wins again. I prefer the Ford step. I have the FX4 package on my F350 and with the handle right next to the step it makes it easier to help pull myself up. The new Ford steps drop even a little further.

Fitting 8' long items is one of the reasons why I always get the 6-1/2' long beds in my full size trucks (GM). I've also fit 8' long lumber corner to corner inside the standard bed. I don't go places where having a shorter bed is of value (cities IMO). I also don't keep a hitch inserted, so dropping the tailgate into the step configuration is a non-issue. IMO, just store the hitch until you actually need it (either in a box in the bed, or in the back of the cab). Solves the issue completely. I can't see inserting the hitch as taking much longer than [deploying] that specialized hitch you have on the Sierra. As for the final comment (from your father) about getting into the bed when the load stop is in use... That's what the steps in the bumper can be used for. Still a lower step height than the Ford or Ram (without the additional item to give you a corner step). The first time I've had the MultiPro type tailgate is with my new Sierra. Previously I had Silverado's with the power up/down tailgate. I wish GM would provide a power up/down feature for the main part of the tailgate (don't need it for the subsections). Maybe with the next generation, or with the mid-generation refresh they'll have that feature.

I have an F-150 with the step. I use it all the time and would not get a Ford truck without one. That said, the spring button in the handle has failed twice. I took the whole thing apart and fixed it but the plastic on the button has chipped a bit so it make me nervous that it will collapse when using it to get out of the bed. I double check it every time I deploy it. Also the cover on the step (when closed) has separated from the mechanism a few times. It pops back on but it is annoying. Overall I think the GM step is a more robust system. I have not used it personally so that is just my impression from reviews and demonstrations like you did here. Also it is much more than a step. It is unfortunate that the load stop is just short of 8' in the model you have here but I would likely get a 6.5ft bed so that fixes that issue. Also, the higher 'workbench' position would be better ergonomically for some uses and if you don't like it you have the option of the standard position. Seems like it lets you use it how you best see fit. More options is always better. I also really like what you did with the lights. Nice to see there are aftermarket features that can be added that are a better use of the space than speakers. I get the issue with hitting the hitch but I understand that there is a way to temporarily lock out the step feature when you have a hitch installed. Kinda eliminates the usefulness of the step, however (unlike on the Ford) so there is that. Personally I only have a hitch installed when towing so it would not be an issue day-to-day but YMMV. Out next truck will likely be a GMC 2500. Looking forward to your review of their refreshed heavy-duty trucks. Especially how they differ from the 1500 you just bought.

I actually prefer the GM tailgate but I also always uninstall my hitch so that part doesn't matter to me. The flexibility of it is what's key, the fold down actually isn't bad for reaching in and it's nice to have a flat surface to set things down. Second to me is the RAM because a 60/40 split is just great for loading, I wish RAM offered it on the 2500. I never really cared for how far the Ford one sticks outs. It's a fine step and that's all. If all you care about is the step then I could see why the Ford would be your preferred tailgate.

I kind of got the impression the son really wanted the GM tailgate to fail. First of all the stop was meant to be used with the tailgate in the down position and secondly he was quick to point out it would not hold a sheet of plywood before even taking measurements. idk just kind of got that impression. I like it myself.

@19:55 the engineer needs to think that statement thru a little bit more. If you are using the load stop, there is no reason to need the step, because the load should be back far enough that you can reach it and step option not needed. Why would the load stop be used if the load was so far front you cant reach it without getting in the bed.?

The problem with the Ford is if you’ve got a trailer, gooseneck or 5th wheel especially a goose neck the trailer is in the way when you need to connect the safety chains. With the GM side steps in the corner of the bumper you could step up an connect the chains.

I find it comical that Chevy and GMC call their tailgates something different…they are the exact same tailgate with the exact same features…heck those trucks roll off the same assembly line, it is just a matter of which badge they glue to the grille. With respect to calling the flip up thing a load stop, I have two issues. First is you would still need to secure the load to prevent vertical movement, and if done properly, you don’t need the load stop. Second, even if the bed had 8 feet of length to the load stop, you would need to lift the load over the stop, because if you don’t, the stop would still be stowed under the load and impossible to deploy it. Plus if you are lifting the load over the stop, if you at all slide it on top of the stop, the stop will just fold back into its stowed position. To me seems like it is just a gimmick and has no practical application. In terms of it being a step, you can’t put your entire foot on it, making it somewhat unsafe. The simplicity of Ford’s tailgate is far better and you will get more use from it. Just another example of GM chasing Ford, and yet they just can’t catch up.

For loading you could simply lower the split gate section, put all your sheets in and then flip the "step" back up.

Would take the Chevy and Gmc tailgates. They can do more. The Ford does nothing but add a small step. Ford could design the gate to at least swing out horizontally as well. Ram should add a step system into their gate. Every truck should be designed like a Swiss army knife...

Those are clunky tailgates from GM. closing them is awkward at best, smacking a hitch is way too easy to do, load stop lengths are useless on the short bed. Just my opinion, but I bet the majority of people who like these are brand loyal people and would have the GM or Chev regardless.. even lifting a heavy load onto the tailgate edge (fifth wheel hitch for example) then you can’t even use it.
@DoubleD72
@DoubleD72 Жыл бұрын
The GM tailgate was a good idea poorly executed. In a real world use i never see anyone using the GM tailgate. They all say it's too much effort and they are all afraid it's going to break. People aren't going to choose Ram because it's Ram. They are always last at everything. I am buying a truck for its overall performance. Not it's tailgate. So there is only 1 answer. The Ford. ;)

I remember when Ford first came out with the “man step” GMC and Chevy made fun of it for years. Then gm comes out with this thing which everyone else calls the toddler step. Then Ford comes out with an aluminum bed and body. GM makes fun of it and then show stupid commercials of toolboxes piercing the bed. Three years later, GM comes out with an aluminum bed. GM and Chevy are never pioneers of the industry. They are followers and then they take something that was just a functional piece of the truck and they totally make it ridiculous and then claim it’s the best of them. Chevy and GM should stop wasting their money on commercials, bashing other peoples products and come out with some of their own ideas that actually make a difference. I know my favorites were these are not professional actors. They are real truck owners, and then you see these people in like 50 other commercials.
