I use watercolor. I painted out nine "sample skies" on a sheet of 9x12" of various blues, including payne;s gray and moonglow. The differences are shocking, and you don't really know it if you're just looking at one color at a time, or imagining it in your head. I use it as a reference for whenever I need to decide on a sky. Often my choice isn't the first one I considered.

i remember i once bought a tube of phthaloblue in an art shop because ultramarine was sold out and the sky I wanted to have as a background was much too greenish and the phthaloblue was so intense that I used almost the entire tube of white I bought with it. I also assumed at the beginning that i could pre-paint many smaller canvases with it and then the color was unfortunately only enough for 3. Only because I didn't have enough money to buy some larger bottles, I paid a lot more money for the small amount of paint I bought, I think it was 3,60€ per 60ml tube.

How useful is Cobalt in general? It is pricey that puts me off. I haven't try it, so I dont know the properties. Is it indispensable in lets say mix with yellow for foliage or something like that? Or just very useful for natural sky? Cause from here it seems like little bit of Ultramarine+Phthalo will imitate it very close?

Hi Cesar, may I ask you, how are these four colours classified in temperature? To me it seems like Ultramarine and Cobalt are on the cool side and Phtalo and Prussian on the warm... How are they classified? Thanks, you're great!
@CesarCordova3 жыл бұрын
Yes, Ultramarine and Cobalt are more violet, and Phtalo and Prussian are more green. It depends on what you think is cool or warm, some say green is warm because it tends towards yellow, and others say violet is warm because it tends towards red. And the opposite, that green is cool because it tends towards blue or that violet is cool because it tends towards blue too. There is not a correct or wrong answer.

What do you think is the most beliveable blue fpr the sky? I think Cobalt looks most realistic, but french ultramarine is the more artistic color in a painting. (Look at "Anna Selbdritt" of Leonardo da Vinci at the Louvre!) He used a touch of Ultramarin - i think it was "Lapislazuli"??? PS.: Your examples would been better without the clouds!

The sky has different hues, depending on the time and weather, with phtalo and ultramarine you can mix most of them.

@@CesarCordova Thanks for your answer! You're right: Sometimes the sky has more portions of red and sometimes he is simply clear blue (Phtalo) sometimes even the sky has a little bit of green. By thunder and lightning you see sometimes even Indigo.
