You have way too few views for what you offer and what you get back for yourself. It truly is a labor of love and I really appreciate you.

Thank you so much for your support. I do it because of the feedback I get, helping people move forward or past a hurdle they were stuck on. I remember when I was there. It's worth the time to me. :)

I prefer a PC as well and spent a great deal of time trying to find a replacement for my old, very noisy Dell laptop. I finally purchased a Surface Book 3 13.5" because it has a detachable screen which has its own processor but no fan, so runs silently. My thought was I could use it in detached 'tablet mode' while in the booth, then in 'laptop mode' while editing. But I've found that, even though the laptop base has a fan, it almost never runs so it is essentially silent, so I don't bother detaching it. I've been using it for about 2 months now in 'laptop mode' both in and out of the booth (my closet) and it's been terrific! No Thunderbolt, though.

Ahhhhh thank you! I didnt know there was a place on the internet that you can build a computer. I have been trying to do it on my own with out much help but if there is a website that can help me that solves so many problems for me! THANK YOUUUUUU

I use a desktop with fans to master with all the ports I need but NOT to record. What I use to record is an H4n PRO to get the cleanest recordings I can so far (no computer). I am thinking of getting a fanless computer experience if I record while using USB-C in near future but right now the budget allows for the H4n PRO and a fully fanned desktop.

Another great video Angela... I have used many systems to VO over the years... even as far back as 1997 using a monster laptop and an audio-in jack to record interviews during PC gaming events. I have also dealt with PC fan noise and heat... For a long time, I suffered the fan noise issue from my PC... In addition, because it was a monster of a machine, used to edit and render video and audio it also kicked off A LOT OF HEAT... So much heat that I had to run the AC to just fight back to normal, which unfortunately froze my wife in her home office. So, what did I do? I have a small space/room in the back of the laundry room on the other side of my office wall. I cut a passthrough into that area, now dubbed the server room, and then I moved every piece of technical hardware and networking gear in there. You might NOT be surprised as to how much heat is generated by a PC, but also add in modems, smart hubs, network hubs, etc.... it adds up fast. I don't recommend using a closet for this option, you will heat throttle (slow down the PC) very quickly. The room needs ventilation and/or proper airflow. But if you can make it work and set up your PC in another room and route all the cables you need back to your recording area... your VO quality will thank you for it. Now my recording studio is whisper-quiet, the heat in the server room is managed by a smart fan and sensors. Also thankfully, my wife is not being frozen in the middle of winter.

That's awesome! It's great when everything has its place, functions properly and the wife is not frozen in the process, we'll done!!

This is interesting, I had the same Mac laptop, then upgraded to a Nuc 6. I know what you mean about the fan noise and my cat would sleep on it and I'd be like - why is my frame rate slowing down? OH the cat is suffocating my PC. We then built a system for me (My husband loves building PCs) and it's much quieter and we set up an ethernet system in the house. I use the old Nuc as storage.

Just subscribed, and liked. Our son is wanting to get into VO. He has just graduated with his BA in History. He has a broken down sketchy little acer laptop. His mom and I want to get him a good computer so he can deliver the best recordings. The problem is is that none of us are very tech savvy. We were going to get him a HP laptop and a large remote monitor, keyboard and mouse. I like this idea of the custom tower. If he contacts them and explains what he would be using it for, will they know what he needs? Thanks again, John
@VoiceOverAngela2 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, you can also custom configure your tower right on their website. There are a handful of companies that custom build PCs, I would price shop too ;)

Well, I have the very beginning of a studio, I suppose; I have a PC. That said, I'm not in any way, shape or form an expert when it comes to setting up technology (in this case, setting up a studio). So, if there was someone who could set it up for me, that would be ideal. Are there people who do that? I'm thinking about Best Buy's "Geek Squad" for instance, although I've never used them. Wondering if most folks who post here set up their studios on their own OR had someone do it for them? If everyone has done it on their own .... I'm gonna feel so stupid - Ha!
@VoiceOverAngela3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I am sure there is a good mix of people who had done the set up on their own and those that had help. Most of my friends in this industry had set up their studios on their own, including me! I wanted to learn all that I could so I could troubleshoot some issues, if they arose. :)

Its not till recently I realized how loud my desktop is. For my audiobook I've been recording in a closet with my hp laptop then editing on my pc. I may just switch just to a newer laptop but don`t know how to tell which ones have loud fans. Of course any laptop will be quitter then my desktop. Do you have any recommendations?

@@VoiceOverAngela i got 10 ft cables and made it as far as in my closet 😂. It does dull down the noise. I may need to get a USB booster and more cable and shove it in the hallway somewhere 😂

Hi Angela, great video thanks. I'm computer illiterate doing my best to learn from you. I'm pretty sure I will be purchasing a Mac. The only thing is, I need a mouse and a keyboard. Can you use a wireless mouse with a Mac? It would certainly be time consuming to use your fingers to roll around the cursor rather than using a mouse which is obviously faster.
@VoiceOverAngela3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pam! I am a PC person but I'm pretty sure you can, I'm sure they all work the same way in this respect. But you're right, if would be much easier to edit with a mouse better suited for it.

I do have a monitor in my closet studio, but my usb wireless mice will not function through the closet door. Do you think a bluetooth mouse will work?
@VoiceOverAngela3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question that I'd like to know the answer to. In theory, it would, but I couldn't tell you for sure. Keep us updated on what you find out! :)

Your USB wireless mouse should work if you put the USB dongle in the booth with you. Use a USB extension cord or plug it into a USB hub.

Not at all, some macs are very powerful. Im just a PC girl ;) You don't really need a powerful computer unless you get really into video and effects.
