Converters are extremely important b/c good ones will keep the integrity of the sound that you worked so hard for when you were sound designing with you Moøg or DSI or whatever. They even effect the quality of your plugins also and your processing i.e. Compression, Limiting, and even resampling plugs which I love. First time I ever heard a producer keep it real about converter quality. Some people actually think there is no difference between a Focusrite 2i2 and a Prism Sound Atlas.

Hey man I just watched this whole video. I have an MPC Live, I plan on buying these PreSonus 3.5 inch monitors for my room. Which interface would YOU PERSONALLY recommend I buy?
@Altruwest3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your long term plans for your studio, your current equipment setup and also your production style (genres). For my personal style, I would not get anything less than an 8 channel interface because I use a lot of hardware synths and outboard effects. I make Hip Hop, R&B and some experimental electronic music. You can literally make due with any audio interface, but without context I couldn't recommend a configuration for your specific needs. If you'd like to setup some time to discuss and plan out your setup, please feel free to book a session with me: altruwest.com/product/1-hour-online-project-studio-consultation/

J, thank you brother for this video its opening up a hella new possibilities for my Hybrid setup. My setup is a MPC2500 as my main sequencer, SP1200, launchpad Mk37, Model 12 all running into Ableton Lite. I definitely want to keep my MPC control both the SP for beat production and Ableton for tracking, (stems, mastering) purposes. Alot of my tracks have more than one sequence (some at different tempos) that's why I have the MPC 2500 as the Master sync. I bought the Model 12 thinking as an AI I would be able to solve all of this, but just learned the Model 12 only sends MIDI out (and has a MIDI in port unused? smh). My ideal workflow is to be able sample, make beats on MPC and SP, Use the Launchkey as a MIDI keyboard for Ableton and a Proteous 2000 (also running thru MPC) and being able to seamlessly track everything into Ableton with MPC as the sequencer. Huge Bonus if I can resample from the PC into MPC whether Ableton sounds or online samples and also be able to somehow utilize the Model 12 / Ableton control feature. I know that's alot of info haha and sorry if I didn't explain it 100%, but what is the setup / gear you recommend for this? Am I approaching this the right way or should I completely switch this up to accomplish all this? I really appreciate the videos and any tips advice is greatly appreciated!

im in the same boat ...u ever figure it out?? ..can u just use ableton as your sequencer .? im asking cause i dont know ...when recording in ableton does it have quantizing??. ...like say u sample a kick snare and hi hat and its on your mpc 2000 ...can you then just ...press record in ableton for track one and play hi hats for 8 bars then loop it ...and do the same with kick and snare??? ..also ..can u connect mpc through midi in the audio interface midi ins and outs and then the mpc could controll drums in your daw ?? i got alot to learn about this computer stuff ..

You have a lot of knowledge professor. What do you think of the akai force? How would I connect this to my computer?
@Altruwest4 жыл бұрын
In principle the Force connects to your computer the exact same way as an MPC. You’ll need to decide how you want to integrate it with your setup since it has compatibility with Ableton Live as well. The main components of the set up are connecting the audio outputs of the Force to your audio interface for monitoring and direct recording and connecting either USB or 5pin midi for wired midi control. The Force also has Link protocol over WiFi if you decided to use sync. Since the Force also has export options for audio, you may not need use Midi sync for recording.

Question for you J. On the newer MPCs, would it make a difference sound wise tracking out into an interface using the mpc outs vs exporting stems within the mpc? Thanks!
@Altruwest3 жыл бұрын
Tracking into an interface will always make a difference. Some interfaces have preamps and other processing capabilities to alter the sound i.e UAD unison. Even a cheap interface will change the sound due to the quality of the preamps and converters. You need to compare them to determine which sounds most desirable for you.

What is your connection like going from the MPC to the audio interface as far as cables go? From the output on the MPC are you using TS or TRS cables into the inputs on interface?
@deepfocusmediaproductions47383 жыл бұрын
Quick comment, with two outputs you can use splitters to go to your monitors and to the mpc simultaneously. Most home producers can use this fix with their 2 output interface.
@Altruwest3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately what you have suggested is a feedback loop without further clarification
@deepfocusmediaproductions47383 жыл бұрын
@@Altruwest It depends on the setup of course. Putting tracks into the DAW 1 or 2 at a time from the mpc won't cause feedback if the inputs aren't armed. The signals going to the mpc for recording are done with monitors off or turned down and with headphones. Tracking 2 channels at a time us time consuming. But, it helps one gain patience and appreciate it when they can record several simultaneously. I use the motu m2, I love it for the loopback recording. So anything coming out of the DAW can be tracked internally in the recording software or picked up on the outputs. I can also do a mix of internal (loopback mix), and external signals coming in. It's great for extracting audio from the internet and for the price point the sound is great! I'm using Cubase Pro 11, just picked it up and loving the tools. I'm able to edit faster, chop/effect in the Cubase sampler and dump into the mpc for further processing and creation. Also it's easy to fade the samples in or out in the Daw. And converting midi to audio is pretty cool in Cubase. Using the MPC as a plugin is great too. I've done almost all of the softwares from back in the day Pro Tools, FL Studio, Cakewalk Sonar, Vegas Pro Audio, Cubase and Logic. Different ones are good at particular things so I've never been all in on one application until now. Cubase offers more features out of the box for what I'm doing currently.

You could definitely use a mixer with a 2 channel interface, but I believe it limits your options for post production and processing. There's wrong way with any of this, I just believe that audio interfaces can be a huge money pit if you don't purchase wisely. I would recommend getting an interface that allows you to grow and expand your studio over time as opposed to something super limited.

Hey Fam, you can track with any device, however, smaller interfaces require you to use multiple passes in order to record separate tracks from the MPC. The process is a lot longer and you need to use MIDI Sync/MTC or some audio synchronization to keep things aligned. I also do not prefer 2in 2out interfaces when working with MPCs because you don't have enough outputs to sample from the computer back in to the MPC while you work.

What is multi channel recording in the context of MPC? Sorry for being a noob.
@Altruwest3 жыл бұрын
No problem fam. Here's a simple way to look at it: Kick, Snare, Hi Hat, Percussion, Main Sample (Stereo), Bassline, SFX. That's already 8 channels of separate audio that one would need to record into a DAW in order to have control of the mix. Hopefully that provides more context.
@MuhammadLaher3 жыл бұрын
@@Altruwest thanks for educating me. So on my MPC I record on different tracks. So my kick and snare on one track, high hat on another, baseline on another, sample on another. So these tracks need to be individually recorded through audio interface into a DAW?
@Altruwest3 жыл бұрын
@@MuhammadLaher If you plan on mixing the music or having a song recorded to the music, individual tracking is the best way forward. I'm not sure what your application is (Instrumental Only, Songs (Music + Vocals)), but generally speaking, music created on the MPC would still need to be recorded as separate tracks. I would say the only exception to this would be "Beat Tapes" and demos, where there is an expectation of "rawness" or "unfinished" aesthetic.

@@Altruwest thanks again. No vocals, just beat making. I’ve just been playing around on the MPC having fun but thinking that it would be nice to record it onto the laptop. @@Altruwest sorry for being such a rookie, but couldn’t I just individually track out one by one into the DAW? So I have a 2 channel audio interface and I track out the first track which is the kick and snare, then do the same for high hat, then same for sample. Would this not work? It's time to get that MPC X because that's what the 4000 was trying to be, I know for real. I had the MPC 4000 connected to the pc and really I just said yeah the MPC 4000 was just way ahead of its time. Give me the X. I'm only mad cause I did pay top dollar and got back less from when I sold it. Oh well.

It's solid for monitoring, but definitely not the greatest pick for multitrack recording and effects routing.

Yeah but if you have the MPC Studio you don't need more channels,2in/2out is all you need.

This video was not so much about the software driven versions of the MPC like the Renaissance, Touch, and studio. The software driven version have a much different workflow, however I still believe that for the most flexible system you still need 4 outputs so that you can use outputs 3-4 for outboard signal processing while monitoring with speakers. A 2/2 interface is convenient for travel and will allow you to still do some outboard processing, however you would need to monitor with headphones only since you would be using your main outs for routing to outboard.

A. Haynes Do you even know the guy. The fact that you had to correct his grammar shows you understood him. Did you watch his video for the sole purpose of his Pronunciation or Information. Cause it seems to me you understood every word. The point is, do know him, Maybe it's his accent, he might be from another country. But your pompous butt replies are it "Awwwdio" not "idio" when his video was very informative & a learning experience. Why don't you make your own channel about how to properly say a word & see how much views you get. If you do I'll bet all your comments would be "who gives a shit". It's 2018 "rite" Get with the program. Oops I mean "right "maybe that was too hard for your brain to comprehend. Have A Nice Day.
