All of my quilts are "scrappy" because I collect fabric from thrift stores, leftover sewing projects, men's shirts, fabric given to me, etc. I LOVE scrappy quilts because they're so interesting, always something to see as you examine it closely.

Oh - I love the Hunter Star quilt. That's my color range. Thanks Karen for all the insights. I also really like the flower wall hanging.

Finally! Someone who recognizes the true meaning of a scrap quilt! Quilts made from coordinated precuts are beautiful; however, they are not, I repeat not, scrap quilts. True scrap quilts are made from, guess what? SCRAPS from your stash! I make scrap quilts that are color coordinated, and usually with small pieces. Loved this presentation!

I love "the dog's breakfast" quilt. I have made many of Bonnie's quilts. I could see "the dog's breakfast" quilt with a stopping border and another round of a different type of block, another stopping border, and finally a piano key border.

I consider a scrap quilt to be the leftovers from a quilt I made. Those were my scraps. Now they are a brand new quilt.

I agree. A border or two to pull everything together would finish the project. My scraps are donated from friends and there's never enough of any one fabric to choose an obvious theme. That's the challenge, and the reward. ❤

Excellent video! Thank you Karen❣️I have never made a scrap quilt, not for a lack of scraps, but because I am afraid to put random pieces of fabric together. I also didn’t know where to start to curate a collection of fabrics. This video changes everything. I particularly like the idea of using analogous colors. Thank you so much for explaining your strategy for curating a scrap quilt. I don’t care for the “dogs breakfast” look.😄

This video is SOOOO educational ! I saw many scrappy quilts where I could see and recognize a huge amount of work to put them together, yet they looked junky and undesired. Why ? Because the makers were not educated enough to make good decisions on choosing the fabrics or arranging the fabrics to look pleasant and cohesive when the quilts were completed. I learned a lot from your video !!! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge ! 🙏❤️

Thanks for the wonderful video. After I had been watching some "Karen shorts" on YT, they recommended this one. I laughed when I saw the name of your channel as at first I thought, "Oh my, Karen quilts" wondering if it would show some women being not very nice, etc. But this was fantastic. Thanks so much. Your scrap quilts are beautiful.

Hi Karen, I just found your channel, and what a joy it is. Excellent content and I love the quilts, and I especially love the fact that you focus on the topic and don’t give us any drama or performances. What a relief! I am not on facebook, but I have subscribed to your you tube channel. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Karen, fabulous exposition! I love my Diamond Dimensions Ruler. There is no other ruler that is better marked for making diamonds (in my view!). Can you believe this?: Amazon used to sell (2019-2020) Free Spirit FatQ bundles of 20 for ~$22. I bought several of those. Such a value. I got some beautiful fabrics (and some wild ones two). Notably, I ended up with one of Anna Marie Horner's collections across about 3 bundles that I made a quilt with. One of my early efforts, but still one of my favorite quilts.

Lovely video. Very helpful. I am making a scrappy quilt at the moment using 21/2" squares and off- white inserts that hold the design together and you have defined and articulated what I instinctvely was doing with the colours, so it is working. A most useful video with a range of examoles that enliven the theory. Thank you.

Do you ever use the RUBY BEHOLDER? A red (or green) plastic, hand-held item that you can look through to see values? This is immensely helpful to me! I am soo bad at seeing scraps and sewing them to look good =P

A controlled scrappy vs a humble scrappy quilt are both wins to the quilter. Yeah, they might not look that great, but in the end, are a usable quilt. The fabric industry has spoiled us with full lines of fabric that coordinated that could be 45 different fabrics. They are kind of defining what a charm or scrap quilt is. They have everything to gain from this psychology, money in the bank. But those beautiful lines of fabric have really eroded what a scrap quilt once was, vs today. I wonder in a hundred years what change the scrap quilt will go through yet again to end up being desirable?

In scrap quilts the fabrics don't match exactly. Even if they are all blue, the blues would be different. Some would lean toward green, others toward grey or purple. In a purchased collection they are designed to match. The same or very similar shades are used in all of the prints in one fabric group.
