And there is one more important parameter in motors that was not mentioned - it's a mounting holes pattern and it's dimensions. Two same stator size motors can have mounting holes with different sizes placed on different distances, so one motor will fit to your frame and another will not.

20 years ago racing rc cars we kept track of wire wraps which could be a thicker gage and fewer turns made a faster more torquey motor like a greedy 11 turn was badass or like a "stock" class 27 turn motor batteries lasted 5 or 6 minutes I am trying to learn the ins and outs of fpv .thanks for all the great vids you guys and j.b are all I watch

Yah I agree. Logically more blades and a heavier prop would benifit from a slighty larger motor. Like a cinewhoop with 1408 4000kv with triblades, but if you wanted 5 or 6 blades it would make sense to bump upto a 1507 3800kv. I think...

What would be the difference in a low kV motor paired with a high pitch prop versus a high kV motor with a low pitch prop
@Rapsaj
@Rapsaj 5 жыл бұрын
Bret Huisjen others can correct me if i am mistaken but from my experience, if your were to pair a low Kv motor with high Pitched prop, I have found the experience lacking as they tended to bog down didn’t have that snappy, quick response I prefer at low throttle. At high throttle tho the prop allowed the quad to gain a higher top speed. A high kV motor with a low pitched prop would give a better instantaneous response but would top out and not be able to reach as high of a top speed when at full throttle. (Note: if you were to pair a low kV 1650-1800kv motor with a 6 cell battery the performance would be similar to a 2300-2500kv motor with a 4 cell. [most people switch to 6s because it allows them to have a longer flight time with a 1050mah 6cell vs a 4 cell 1300mah. The watt hours are more with the 6 cell LiPo]) (1050mah/1000) x (6cells x4.2 volts per cell) = 26.46Watt hours 1.05Ah x (6x4.2V) = 26.46Wh (1300mah/1000)x (4cellsx4.2volts per cell) = 21.84Watt hours 1.3Ah x (4x4.2V) = 21.84Wh

Depends on what areas of difference you're noticing.. At slow(er) speeds or hover, a higher pitch prop will tend to cavitat more, be less responsive to throttling, generally produce less static thrust at a given rpm, and works your fc and esc's harder, and may take a good tune, or will make tuning more finicky.. but at higher forward speeds it comes into its element as it "hooks up", becomes more efficient, and produces higher speeds (along with less rpm and vibrations vs higher kv/low pitch). So if you want to take off and cruise around faster a lower kv high pitch combination might be the right pick. A higher kv lower pitch combo will deliver better low speed handling via wider throttle resolution that also allows the fc more fidelity because the props are turning faster, producing more predictable static thrust and not cavitating as much. It'll be nimble and predictable around a playground of obstacles, without being too sensitive, but it may produce boring punchouts... I generally stay somewhere in the middle.. like 24-2500kv on 5046 props for heavy freestyle bricks, or 5050/5052's on a lightweight build.. The brand and style of prop will also make a huge difference.. some are amp hungry, others not so much, its all trade-offs.

The most critical point not mentioned in this video (as is mostly the case with this bogus channel) is HEAT. Yes, all motors eventually die, but the wrong prop size, generating too much heat, will accelerate how quickly the motor dies. You should be able to hold your fingers on the bell, after a relatively long flight, without your fingers being singed.

@@Smarthomeyourself Not sure what my all up weight is but I get about the same flight time with my 4S 1300mAh on my 2300kv - it is older X style frame and I forget who even made the motors. I get over 6 minutes when I cruise with my 2200mAh 3S batteries. The video I linked to are running 6S 1300mAh 1600kv and got 8 minute 'cruise' flight. I'm building a Marmotte now with an eventual target of flying 6S - the thing with 6S is there is less sag and the motors, I've read and watched, are more responsive
@dash8465
@dash8465 5 жыл бұрын
The first key to longer flight times is prop selection.. if you're getting 4 minutes on a 5046 drop down to a 5043, for example. It may seem you need more throttle stick to hover, and it wont punch-out as rapidly, but it also wont be sucking as many amps overall and that increases flight duration. A lower pitch prop will also feel a little less twitchy or "touchy", more managable in general (better for new pilot). fwiw..I started flying 5" quads on 2200 3s packs, 2450kv and Gemfan 5052 props.. that was plenty of managable punch/fun while learning basic flight and transitioning from Angle mode to Acro mode, plus the flight times were well into the 7 or 8 minute range. Even today, once in awhile I'll throw a 3s on and cruise around, usually when someone new and interested wants to see the neighborhood or local area thru spare goggles without making them dizzy or sick.. lol.

8 to 10mins is easy.. my 5" long range does 40mins (I have video) I still can freestyle it a lil. Just did over 10mins with hero9 but felt the weight lol. U could build a freestyle drone then if u want to cruise longer put on a bigger battery. A lil smaller motor and lower pitch prop will up flight times

I'm just a beginner. I bought some 2450kv motor and it didn't last that long on the air(around 3 minutes). Trying to get used to flying it, the flight time isn't helping. People say that if I use a 5s or even a 6s motor , it would help increase the flight time. Is it true? I'm just cruising around though, no crazy trick yet.
@alexdunda
@alexdunda 5 жыл бұрын
Not for 2450KV. Each cell you add to a battery, you add voltage. This means you have to adjust the KV of your motor. You have to get somewhere around 1800-1900KV for 5s or 6s. It also depends on the prop your running. 5 inch with 1800 KV and 6s is very efficient. But also decreasing the weight of your quad is important too. Hope this helps. JUST DO NOT RUN 6S ON THAT MOTOR!!!! Also check if your ESC/FC can run high voltage. If you don't do research first it will blow up and you will not be happy...Trust me.

@@alexdunda Thanks dude, well I've flown my miniquad a couple of times now, I forgot to mention that I use a 4s battery. I'd seen some video on KZbin about people trying 4s on their 6s setup. They mentioned that it wouldn't have the speed but the flight time is excellent so I thought that is what I need, a 5/6s setup and then use my 4s battery. Well I'm no expert so I'd like to here your thoughts.

As far as I know kv is rated for motor without any resistance like props etc. so it’s theoreticallish value. Right?
@dash8465
@dash8465 5 жыл бұрын
Correct, sort of. Calculating kv on paper is theoretical and varies a lot depending on many real-world factors; wire quality/thickness, magnet strength and the bells ability to confine the magnetic field, stator diameter/height/arm length/number of poles, and the number of wire turns around each stator pole - more turns equals less kv, but also more copper, a stronger magnetic field, and more torque at a given voltage, and generally an efficiency advantage. (which is how 6s comes into play). The actual kv of a built motor is not theory, it can be tested and duplicated consistently using the exact same wire, turns, stators, and magnents, many esc's can tell you exactly what rpm its turning. A motor's kv will also change a bit as the magnets weaken over time or excess heat. Long story short.. Kv is the rpm per volt the motor will *try* to hit regardless of load... the load slows the motor causing it to draw more amps as it strives to reach its target rpm per volt... more amps = heat... so picking the right combination of voltage applied(4s, 5s, or 6s), native motor Kv, and prop diameter/pitch is paramount in extracting the most power out of a train of parts without over-amping any of them.

If someone would develop a system , like the fuel motors had, it would be a great benefit to everyone concerned. Just adding wattage would be a great help, but it is still a guessing game. How about all developers get together and create a system so one can choose a motor to match his needs without guessing. Promoters, such as Rotor Riot and others, could use their influence to cause builders to set up a system that would be helpful to all.

A lot of vague and innacurate information in this video, and that's coming from me, a complete drone beginner. Wouldn't efficiency be when given 1volt input, the rpm is equal-to or less-than the kV rating of the motor?
@isaaclanier1507

@mysticfakir2029
@mysticfakir2029 4 жыл бұрын
@@isaaclanier1507 I might be a beginner to drones, but I am an engineer. Motor efficiency is defined as output power divided by input power. Just because an electric motor is used in drones as opposed to any other application, doesn't all of a sudden change the definition of efficiency.
@isaaclanier1507
@isaaclanier1507 4 жыл бұрын
Simon O'Toole That’s the problem, you’re coming at this from an engineering perspective, you need to come at this from a drone perspective. It’s defined as power to weight because if you have a motor that can more easily carry the weight of your rig, which would be higher kv, then for your drone it is inherently more efficient. He’s not referring to the individual motor efficiency, in that case you are correct, but rather the motor efficiency in comparison to the total weight of the drone.
@mysticfakir2029
@mysticfakir2029 4 жыл бұрын
@@isaaclanier1507 But that isn't efficiency, that is output. Output is the net force (or power) that a system produces. That isn't efficiency at all, doesn't matter how you look at it. He is using the word incorrectly. To say I shouldn't be looking at it from an engineering perspective is odd. Drones are an engineered innovation.
@isaaclanier1507
@isaaclanier1507 4 жыл бұрын
Simon O'Toole If what you’re stating is true, then we would naturally want to most efficient motors which by your definition is the highest kv. By your words we would want say a 4,000kv motor on every size drone, but we don’t. We vary by thousands of kv because that’s not how we view motor efficiency when it comes to drones.
