Glad to see others focusing on motor and propeller testing. Great work! The message that's been propagated saying that motors and propellers of the same size and pitch have a negligible difference is so untrue. One observation I've made when measuring Kv is that it is very important that you do the test really quickly (burst and measure) since heat will build up under no load and start affecting the accuracy of the test. This is probably less of an issue on larger motors with a lower Kv, but it makes a huge difference on smaller ones.
@lemonsquareFPV
@lemonsquareFPV Жыл бұрын
Great point, I work on FPV motor design and can tell you that there isn’t really a standardized KV test. Some manufacturers use KV as a feel and not directly measured. Some use spin up at different voltages and Some are like me and measure Back EMF at different RPMs :p LoL It’s all over the place, having worked with almost every company, it’s funny. Some also don’t measure and bracket magnets and take specs as gospel 😂 And some have a hard time winding consistently :p It’s honestly a mess… that’s why I carefully spec my motor designs, even then, I still test everything, because I have been bit multiple times :p

Also I'd like to see some more testing on the Xing2 1855kv which was a motor you used on your AOS5 BNF, and the ones I bought for my own build on your frame. I think what people would like to know straight up, is what is the best motor for each style of flying. Best for racing (performance), freestyle (durability and performance) and cinematic (consistency and smoothness)

To get an exact comparison of air gaps you could measure the stator and rotor diameters with calipers. I'm glad you're doing a true inertial dyno test in addition to the usual prop testing because it really does give you more objective normalized data. How many averages did you do for each run? The data still looks a little blocky on some graphs and the efficiency one is pretty hard to decipher. Cheers!

Hi Chris, great video. I noted that the Mr Steel motor (worst performing) and the best performing both had what appeared to be "single solid stranded" wiring and not what I have seen on some motors which is multiple stranded wiring. And like you I believe the air gap and magnet type can only be the difference in outputs. As an aside I believe the multiple stranded wiring to be better (assuming the same cross section is arrived at) in that it is more flexible so easier to install and it generally less prone to vibration cracking of the insulation. Your comments on this would be appreciated.

That was a really good detailed experiment. Hello Chris, I rewind motors here in Brazil, regarding KV precision, it is very complicated for the kv factor to be a precise value, because the number of turns that is given in each coil is always an integer. What I have noticed is that in the same stator, for example, in a series of four coils 2 are wound with 10 turns and two with 11 turns, of course there are stators with all the coils the same, I just wanted to show you how the manufacturers arrive to different KV values.

Nice testing, great to see the wide range of motors featured here too! You mention the AM32 firmware has a different performance on the FPVcycle motor vs using other firmwares, it's curious the stout v4 motor sits at the bottom. Given the ethix motors are often seen running with fettec/ kiss at least for Steele, would be interesting to see if that changes any results of the motors here to see if there is a benefit or disadvantage to run specific firmwares with different motors. Correct Spec sheet is very valuable info but I also wonder if there's an optimal setup for each component to be used with, like an f1 car works well together by itself, but take any of the well performing parts alone and put them on your Holden Barina, well maybe the car looks cooler in the parking lot. If the feel of one complete setup works better for a person over another, bring on the Permutation testing 🤣

Wow. Until 27 minutes ago I thought the only thing I need to pay attention when it comes to motors is stator size and KV... and then pick whatever I optically prefer most. Guess it's not that simple after all! The one motor company I am missing though is XNova. It seems practically every racer is flying these and also the five33 motors are rebranded/custom xnovas. I put them on all my newer freestyle quads too and am really happy with their overall performance, but I also noticed they run really hot even with a super quiet quad, so I'd love to see where in that chart they would end up! And I know which motors to throw on my next pink AOS5 now XD
@Atlas_FPV
@Atlas_FPV Жыл бұрын
I'm glad to see you've revisited this topic and come to different conclusions, I was never satisfied with your original conclusions as they just didnt match reality at all. These results seem to be much closer. But what I would say is that ranking motors from a static test should not be the be all and end all, the weight of your drone, what you want it to fly like and the performance you're after should all be considered. Take the Mr. Steele motor, he flies 600g AUW quads and wants control, so the factors that you rank as worst actually are the best for those parameters, he has less thrust/ power and less response, this makes a quad that has a nicer throttle and easier to fly. Having a super reactive and powerful motor will make for a terrible flying quad unless you fly Sbang style.
@Alluvian567
@Alluvian567 Жыл бұрын
I disagree, as responsiveness, torque, acceleration are not in response to stick input, in a real quad they are in response to the pid cycle. A motor that responds better to the commands of the FC will perform better. After that, if your quad is performing poorly, it is a poorly tuned pid or a poor pilot. Ultimately, except on the bleeding edge of pilots, all this stuff is proably not super noticeable to a pilot. I mean if steele has bad motors (could have just been a poor individual motor for all I know) and can still fly like he does, it is just proof that the pilot is orders of magnitude more important than the components. And I think we all know that. This sort of testing is fun to geek out over and have fun with, but ultimately, the better pilot flying a shit drone will beat you every time.
