Choosing My New Table Saw

In this video I talk about deciding which new table saw to buy and why I decided to upgrade from a contractor / portable construction style site saw to a cabinet saw. I previously used the DeWalt DW745 and Milwaukee M18FTS saws but the time was right to invest in a new saw. I have this saw and I love it! I took the metal outfeed table of and replaced it with a double layer of plywood, using the original brackets, and routed a couple of slots in it so that I could use a cross cut sled with it. I installed both cast iron extensions on the right hand side. Having all of the extensions and the outfeed is really convenient, plus it gives you twice as much surface to dump stuff on! Also it does run on 13 amps most of the time, but it did occasionally trip the circuit so I upgraded the supply after a while.

I have the Charnwood and though it's not high end it's so accurate and so quiet it was a massive improvement - you might have to start checking how accurate your tape measures are now; I did! Have had the same saw for 3 years now. It’s great. Dust extraction isn’t perfect as it’s not that tightly sealed, but I’m just using a standard shop vac rather than proper extractor. But for accuracy, power and solidity I’m very happy. Hope you enjoy yours!

i think you wade a wise choice the saw looks great. I have a ridgid 10" contractor saw it has the stamp metal wings i don't like witch i did not put on. I was using a old grizzle saw that i bought in 1985 it served me well it had cast iron wings that fit perfect on the ridgid i didn't use the base either, i had made a mobile base that i found from Shop Notes magazine it has 4 draws and dust extraction coming from the bottom i also didn't use the fence either i have the incra fence and love it hope yours works well for you!!

You do have to spend some time setting the saw up... blade, fence, etc. But once done, the saw is great. Fairly compact which is Nice kzbin.infoUgkxXh-4_3-ZT1fFWP91ZV7iVqzElr0lEb-a I did get an Incra Miter Gauge which takes some setup as well. The stock miter gauge can be adjusted in the miter slot with a little painter's tape... this tightens up the side to side play a lot.

Really great video Keith, very comprehensive and well explained explanation of what you chose and why - I definitely need to get a proper table saw soon, I know as soon as I do, I'll wonder why I didn't take the plunge earlier - clamping my fence to the bed is only fun for so long! Think you have made a good choice Keith. I was recently contemplating the axminster but decided to do up an old wadkin aGs 10 instead purely due to cost. (100 for the saw, 150 for a single phase motor, 40 for new bearings, and some steel for the fence) but the major drawback is dust collection and lack of a true riving knife. I really enjoyed the restoration project and have a lovely saw that cost me very little but I do feel I've down graded in terms of dust and having a splitter as opposed to a riving knife. Hope the saw serves you well.

Keith i have that SIP 10" tablesaw, i use it and a Draper dust extractor on the same 13 amp mains double socket in my workshop and has never given me any bother mate (comes with a 13 amp plug). Good bit of kit with a good fence and accurate. Can't wait for your table saw review mate

Cracking looking saw Keith. I have the Charnwood W619 and love it. So if you did decide on the 650, I think you would have been on to a winner either way. i must admit I only discovered axminster in the last year and I cannot fault them at all as a company, absolutely brilliant to deal with. I recently bought their craft series planer/thicknesser and I am so pleased with it. I can see you wanting to work with them a lot in the future!

I gave some thought to a new table saw recently, but I was able to "recondition" my jobsite saw and instead used my money towards some other much-needed upgrades in my shop. Still, I like how you broke this down and went through several models to compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages from your perspective. Great choice in my opinion. The service you get from Axminster is second to none. I have the 315 version of yours with the incra fence system on it and its great. I had a problem with the motor but they sent an engineer out within 2 day from Surrey (I live in the Midlands)

I ran my kity 1619 3hp table saw off a 3 pin powerpoint.. trouble is I kept blowing fuses on startup. Annoying. I changed to a 16A commando plug with separate MCB. Perfect. You made the right choice. Looking to upgrade as well.

Nice choice mate. I've got a shappach tablet saw and it's ok for ripping down plywood and lite stuff but in terms of beams, it struggles a little unless I run through either side which lightens the load a bit. Great video chap

When you come to upgrade you'll probably find you will sell it for more than you paid for it, that'd what happened with mine strangely after 5 years use it sold on eBay for more than the £400 I paid!! Interesting review of your selection. I narrowed my choice to the Axminster and the iTec. Went for the iTec. Very pleased with it. As you say it comes with the cast iron side tables but these are an extra at additional cost from Axminster. Like you I didn't need the sliding carriage. I had seen the Axminster saw but not the iTec, reviews indicated that they were basically the same machine so I was confident to buy the iTec unseen

Really enjoyed your video Keith - it is so difficult to compare such equipment. Good luck with the Axminster I bought a S I P 01574 saw secondhand about 6 years ago - it is identical to the Charnwood W650 and overall I have been very pleased with it. The men’s shed that I attend had a Charnwood W619 saw which you mentioned in your comparison. It seems to be an inferior saw with a poor fence system, smaller blade with less power and some issues with the blade raising function (however not many tools stand the rigours of a men’s shed for long anyhow) As you say, a small sliding table spends a lot of time unused - it cannot handle large ply sheets and my sliding mitre saw gets preference for most crosscut jobs. A couple of essential additions for a saw such as this - retractable wheels are a must - a decent out feed table is great - I made a fold down one fixed to the saw which was great but was kept up all the time and wasted the space under and tended to be used as an assembly table as well. I have recently removed this and built a combined outfeed/ assembly table with loads of storage under - good dust collection is also essential

Awesome! You have the euro style fence, that means you should adjust the fence to the gullet of the saw blade or to the centre of the blade. :)

Brilliant video Keith. I'm looking for a table saw for my small "DIY" workshop... And the lumberjack TS1800 looks a good fit but not enough reviews or info on it. For me the built in mobile base looks good...but the Axminster coupled with its mobile base does seem to give better quality and good support from the manufacturer too. Choices...choices.... I may be watching this video a few more times yet.. and will definitely be watching your full review when you do that. Thanks.

I've used one of those Axminster saws and they are good for the money. If anything, you may find the dust extraction isn't perfect - but that comes with most saws! That Lumberjsack saw looks very similar to one that used to be sold by a company called Lyndhurst in Hampshire. It seemed to be one man importing a range of exclusive machinery from overseas... People buying them had mixed experiences, both with the quality of the machine and customer service. But with Axminster and others, you'll never go wrong and their technical team are always on hand to help. ;-)

Sip and Axminster also are sold with 230v, 16A only stands for a start current, not a running current.it’s no problem for a standard garage installation. You can even run a 16A machine on a 12A amp installation with a correct fuse ( it can allow the higher current for a specified time). Running current of those saws is about 4 to 8A. If you do have a right fuse you do not need to change your installation at all.

Nice run down and love the geeky analysis approach. I've just bought the Charnwood W629 for much the same reasons; getting shot of the inaccurate contractor saw and upgrading cast iron. The induction motor are amazingly quiet in comparison. First impressions are pretty good and the only bug bear I have found is that the riving knife sits about 10mm higher than the blade (apparently H&S) and will soon get "adjusted"

I bought the W629 a few months ago with less research but the difference to my work has been amazing. Consistent accuracy was my biggest benefit and the neighbours preferred the quiet motor .I replaced the insert and added a fixed riving knife to that with a second insert for 'dado' cuts. Slide is a now just a very heavy paperweight but replaced it with oak worktop extension and use hand-made sleds.

Hi Keith, Good coverage of the decision making process - it can be surprisingly difficult making informed comparisons on such things as its almost impossible to get all the same bits of information out of the various suppliers, web sites and manuals. I hope you are pleased with the results, it certainly looks very pretty! I was interested to see that both your top picks actually had the same 2.2kW power motors, yet one was classed as needing a 16A supply. Depending on the power factor of the motor, both should have a normal operating current of no more than about 12A. The normal issue with induction motors is that they draw a large inrush current at start up (which can be anything from 5 to 9 times the normal operating current). That can trip circuit breakers or blow fuses on some installations. It’s unlikely to be a problem on a typical UK 32A ring circuit (normal circuit breakers allow up inrush current up to 5x their nominal rating, so 160A gives plenty of head room), but might be on a 16A or 20A radial. If you do get trips, then one can normally change the MCB in the consumer unit for a “C” type device - these are designed to prevent nuisance trips on circuits feeding a high inrush current by allowing a 10x nominal inrush trip limit. It will be interesting to hear what you think of it in use, like ease of blade changing or removing the riving knife, and how effective the dust collection is. Do you know if you can run the fence on the other side of the blade (in effect giving the effect of being able to change between left and right tilt)? Is the arbour long enough to use a dado stack? I need to double check on my saw (a Charnwood W619), but I'm pretty certain the sliding table can relatively easily be completely removed from the Charnwood tables. You can then slide the front and back fence/channels to the left so you can install one of the extension tables onto the left hand side of the saw - though this would mean the scale would be unusable. The sliding table definitely gets in the way, but I find it pretty helpful for the sort of work I do. The saw does have some other flaws though, and I'm pretty jealous of cast iron extension tables!

New tools is always good news and this is a significant upgrade 👍. It seems to be a great machine. Axminster is well know for quality profucts. Thank God you didn't go for a table saw with 1" bore. I have an evolution mitre saw and finding blades is a pain, I have to use reduction rings and it's not the option.

I'm down the two... the Charnwood and Lumberjack, the lumberjack has a slight edge on good dust extraction which is key for me, but a shame on the small 16mm bore blades. I'm also in the market for a table saw to last many years (but very much a hobbyist), but note that in Nov 2022 the cheapest equivalent Axminster table saw to the one you chose is double the price back in 2020 :( The equivalent non-sliding Axminster now seems to be £2.5k. May have to look at Charnwood which is a shame as I live only 40mins from Axminster.

Hi I purchased the sip table saw probably 15 years ago and at the time was the best for the budget I had, it has been a excellent saw that's required little maintenance to keep everything aligned. One down side the plastic fence handle broke and trying to get a replacement was impossible, I received so many wrong parts that I eventually gave up. I might try Axminster as it looks like the same part

Good choice. I bought the Charnwood W650 for our local Men's Shed. A solid machine, but it took several hours to set up and adjust. Taking the riving knife off and on is a nightmare, and the dust collection is atrocious. Not only is the shroud a poor fit at the top, but the external 4" fitting drops to ~3" inside with a narrow, angled turn where it meets the shroud. This collects any slivers of wood and rapidly blocks the tube. On reflection, saws at this price point have to make so many compromises in order to have cast iron face and mounts that other areas suffer. If I were using a saw commercially I would double my budget- and probably get better value.

I've got the same saw, different model number now, previously it was the AW10. I've had it around 2 years now and I still love it. You made a great choice 👍 I only have 3 small issues with mine. First and most annoying; on the right hand side of the fence rail. I catch my jeans on it all the time, I have many pairs of Jean's with rips in. Second, the rear extension table could do with having the mitre slots in as well as the main cast top. Remember this when you make a sled as the tracks have to be fairly short otherwise they hit the extension table. My sled is 1200x600mm and I think the tracks are around 350mm. Lastly, dust extraction is terrible. You'll get lots of chips and dust under the table and will regularly need to take the side off to get the extractor hose in there. Inhave seen people make a tray that fits into the bottom of the saw with extraction attached. I think there is a post with pictures on woodworking UK on Facebook. 👍

Good move not going for the W650. The sliding table is near on impossible to set up with and degree of accuracy suitable for cabinet making so I have discarded it. The fence is disappointing in that it has flex that can only be remedied by putting an f clamp on the far end. I look forward to your review of the Axminster saw. Thanks for the great videos.

I have the Lumberjack ..its great...re-badged Rikon/Ridgid - I asked and got a discount - I also got a dado blade set off Amazon- it is a standard US bore. Great for a small workshop with built in mobility.

I had an old contractor-style saw that was branded Nutool and I imported a Dewalt/Delta dado blade set from the US. My own experience was great at first but soon I found it was just a pain to set up e.g. match the thickness, set the height etc. and it was much quicker & easier to use a router with a decent dado jig or use the router table.

I bought the Charnwood W619 years ago. I bought it because of the price. I wanted the cast iron top. The slide rail has come in useful at times but es it does take up space so I take it off a lot. The 1.5 hp motor seems a bit under powered for me these days and if I had the option again would go for the W650 or the axminster like yours. It is a lovely and quiet machine though. I am going to build it into a longer table with router built in at the end of the extension.

If you don’t have a dedicated workshop and work out of your garage. You’ll need a job site table saw. I have been using a Jet jobsite table saw for about 3 years, pulling it out of my garage and running it in the driveway. I would definitely recommend the Jet if you need a mobile jobsite tablesaw or you need something mobile with precision cuts.

After many years my last table saw died, so I decided to bite the bullet and get a new one. Having read up on the different table saws I decided that the W650 would be perfect. I can't fault the machine for cutting capacity, power of the blade (the 3hp motor works great and is powered by a standard 13amp supply), but in all the reviews I read about it, no one had said anything about the size of the mitre slots. All my old mitre jigs / fences / accessories have a slider that is 19mm wide, but the mitre slots on the W650 is only 15mm wide! Now I will have to either refit all my home made and purchased jigs/fences with thinner sliders (which are NOT very easy to find anywhere!) or get someone to mill out the slot to accept my current sliders. If you are thinking of getting this machine, watch out for the thinner mitre slots.

Wish you’d done this 8 months ago. I used a similar geeky methodology, though you are clearly the Master. Ended up with the 629, for reasons of cost and supporting a local business. It’s ok. A lot of setting up (washers to get levels etc, filing sharp edges etc). It’s all stayed pretty well though. The fence is pretty good (and the gauge accurate) though there is a little play. The riving knife is a bit of a pain - too high to allow dado cuts and the built in overhead extractor hood is set so you have to have the blade protruding above the cut more than I want. Next job will be to replace the supplied blade I think as that left lines on some 2” soft wood. Powerful and quiet but a lot of internal dust build up, even with an ok extractor attached. It does look pretty clunky and poorly finished though. Biggest negative: the power button sits to the left under the sliding table, which is awkward and potentially dangerous if you don’t keep your wits about you. Beggars belief why it would be designed that way. I think I’d go Axminster next time or, if I won the pools, Laguna - that’s a slick looking saw. Look forward to hearing how you get on with your new toy.

Oh, and the non-standard mitre slots are a pain. Whole new set of jigs to make and featherboards no longer fit.

Oh! And another thing! I didn't like the top dust collection unit, but wanted a riving knife, so I cut the top off the metal mounting plate just below the top of the blade, then replaced it - carefully aligning it with the blade using the adjustment provided. I did purchase another mounting plate from Axminster just in case, but I doubt that I shall ever need it. I can now cut safely avoiding kickbacks, and also cut rebates without having to remove anything.
