Sigh. I knew that your channel was a good fit. As a long standing bibliophile, I carried a hidden guilt for having books everywhere in my home that I haven’t read yet. And yet, that has never stopped me from happily returning home with another book haul. Your remarks about your ambitious intentions to read rang true for me.

I loved The Summer Before the War, looking forward to seeing what you think. I adored The Hatmakers, fantastic children’s book. The Pages and Co and the Nevermoor series are both excellent as well. I enjoyed Joan Aiken’s Jane Fairfax also.

Every one of your videos adds a sparkle to my day, Miranda. And usually also adds a title or three to my wish list. I've been cataloging and organizing our home library for weeks now; there are thousands of books here, and I've really enjoyed handling each one. My summer goal is not only to read for longer periods each day again but also to spend time with some of the summery titles I have unearthed while working on this project. And of course, the Comfort Book Club titles!

I was happy to hear you talk about J.L. Carr as I recently watched the movie "A Month in the Country" (1987) which featured very young Colin Firth, Kenneth Branagh, Miranda Richardson and Jim Carter. It was such a beautiful and touching film and I'm now eager to read the book. I remember enjoying "The Summer Before the War" and "The Beloved Girls" sounds intriguing. I picked up Jennifer Ryan's new novel, "The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle" from the library yesterday and also bought my first vintage book at their sale of donated books - 1963 copy of "Out of Africa" with a gorgeous cover. A favorite of mine and a steal for 33 cents!! Your flowers are lovely (peonies?). Wishing you and Donna a Happy Summer!

Delightfully summery and inspired recommendations, thank you Miranda. I shall look into the book by Jason Reynolds, and the Persephones are on order too. I am looking forward to reading Joy in the Morning this week, and another is Wilfrid Blunt's 'Of flowers and a Village' - a seasonal tale told in letters from Wilfrid to his goddaughter about village life and gardening. As always, many thanks for your fabulous videos and recommendations. Best wishes, Jason

Your channel is an island of magic. Thank you so much for sharing it with us ! I am a seasonal reader but not in the conventional sense. What most people consider as a summer read , I'll consider as an aid to overcome the cold and darkness of winter but under the bright light and endless warmth of summer I'll be thrillingly diving into darker and scarier books. For instance, I plan on reread The Quincunx by Charles Palliser.

Thank you so much for those kind words! I do understand and know others who will choose a book about being snowed in, for example, in a heatwave. Books just enhance our life so much when we read mindfully to suit our own circumstances sometimes. 📚❤️

I'm hoping to read some Rose Macaulay this summer too. I am also starting to read East of Eden for the first time.

After a recent vacation in Italy, although not Venice, I am reading the Gondola Maker. I have a stack of books to get through although I keep seeing new ones to buy. I may just buy Manderley Forever, after your review of it and maybe Bitter Orange. If you haven't already read it you may like The Soldiers Wife by Margaret Leroy, a Second World War novel set in Guernsey.

What a lovely surprise to have an extra video with so many splendid recommendations for summer. I finished A Sky Painted Gold well ahead of time and I'm currently reading The Secret Lives of Dresses by Erin McKean, which I'm enjoying so far. Also non-fiction The Inner Life of Animals which is fascinating, The same author (Peter Wohlleben) also wrote another very interesting book, The Hidden Life of Trees. I'm a big fan of Monica Edwards especially the Romney Marsh books. I have ten of her titles but I don't have Dolphin Summer, I'll try to find a second-hand copy. Another one I've been trying to track down is Sand in our Shoes but no luck yet. Many more titles to tempt me and room on the bookshelves now after a recent massive clear out.😄

Hello Miranda…thank you for this extra video. I always love your choice of titles and quite an aggressive TBR list it is. I started to read The Summer Before The War last year but for some reason, it did not hold my interest and so I put it aside. I am anxious to read your review and depending I may give it a go again. Spending the evening in the garden sounds lovely, unfortunately I live in a bug area so evenings can be annoying however mornings are delightful. I’m looking forward to the Joy in the Morning discussion this month. A very funny book. Happy reading.🌸

So many gorgeous books. I think I'll try some of Agatha's Mary Westmacott novels this summer. I've been working my way through some murder mysteries by Caroline Graham. Set in the 1980s they are what the TV series Midsomer Murders was based upon. They are absolutely wonderful! Very redolent of Agatha 🔎
