Let us not forget that there is a group of people (and I'm one of them...) that are best served with one of the vintage mechanical Berninas. Sure, I like watching these vids about these modern sewing computers: they are very impressive. But I would not want to trade any of my mechanical machines: not my iconic 830 Bernina record, nor my 1940's Bernina 121 straightstitcher (nor any of the others). They are workhorses that were built to last. But for me, it's mainly the intuitive manner of operating them that works so well for me. To such a degree that I don't mind that they have less features. (To be honest, I'm not a quilter, nor am I a particular fan of embroidery... Sure, if I would be, my vintage machines would most probably no longer cover my needs.)

Can’t wait for your 790 plus video!!

I understand. Sooo BERNINA i very overdue for a new machine. However I've been told that we won't see a new machine until 2023 and with the way production is sooooooo behind I wouldn't expect to see a machine that a customer will be able to have in their home until 2023 at the earliest. unfortunately ! So they introduce new machine in July and we don't see them in the store until September-November. In the case of the new 770Plus I am still waiting on machine that I ordered when they were released back in August. I've just gotten news that many models have been halted in production because of part shortage. Very frustrating of us dealers but if you are worried about a new model coming out in the next six months there won't be one sadly :( However doesn't mean you can't wait for something new to come out, haha because it will happen soon. Also when they do release new models some dealers will take deposits so you can be the first person to get one. If you have any questions let me know. :)

Thank you for so clearly explaining the pros/cons of 5/9mm stitch when it comes to piecing. That was very helpful. I just always assumed BIGGER WAS BETTER! I guess maybe one question I have, does the dual feed features help to balance out the disadvantage of having the 9mm feed dogs when you're doing piecing - or are you still better off with narrow feed dogs and lower-feed only when it comes to precision?

I have a 770 which I purchased for quilting. Initially I wanted a 570 due to budget but the 770 can embroider larger projects. I struggle with piecing small blocks on the 9mm as well. My Juki 2010TL with 5mm stitch width pieces beautifully but its so clunky...I have been contemplating on getting a 475 for piecing and garment sewing
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651 2 жыл бұрын
You fit the profile of my of my customers. They decided to go for the 770 because you do get a bigger machine which is very useful compared to going with the 570 but both fully capable. However the 9mm stitch width is sometimes a little difficult to work with more delicate times and seam allowances. The 5.5mm stitch plate helps but doesn't eliminate the problem. This is why I think the 475 is an amazing counterpart to the 770. :)

Also, can you demonstrate how the straight stitch plate and the #10 presser foot works and why you like it so much. Right now with my 740, I am just doing leaders and ends with a 57D to get around the 9mm stitch plate. It's okay but want to see if I want to change it up. Thank you Thank you Thank you

Haha I understand the 790+ is An amazing machines the 735 will be a great machine as well but the 790 will have many features the 735 won’t have. But it really depends on what you want to do and the look your going for 5.5 mm or the 9 mm stitch width. The 770 + is very very similar to the 790+ now. But doesn’t meN the 790 won’t get an upgrade to elevate it more.

I just recently bought a 750QE second hand. I am a quilter from Canada, the price of a new 770QE was just too much. I do not see any tutorials on the 750 and was wondering how it compares, or what is the difference between it and the 770 which I do see a lot of tutorials on. I am enjoying your tutorials. I am using them to learn how to use the machine as I have never had a Bernina before. I am hoping I can in future add the quilting module to it as I am finding this such a cool way to quilt. What machine would you recommend for garment sewing. Like buttoned men's shirts, jeans (using flat felled seams-so lots of layers), and children garments. I currently use the Bernina 380, but I find the space between the needle to the base a problem (I also used a vintage Singer 201, which has a 8 inch distance, which was very nice. But well, the Bernina is much better after all). Also I would like to know more about the 9mm vs the 5.5mm differences : I sew a lot of shirts, and the 5.5mm stitch width works fine, I can hardly imagine how the 9mm will be better... Another question : Do I need pressure adjustment on the presser foot ?

Hi Cody. This was really good info. I have a question. I bought the 790 Crystal Edition coming from a 570. It's beautiful and sews super nice, but it's just too big. My sewing room is in a loft and I am 71 - too old to be carrying the big heavy machine with embroidery module. I've decided that I don't want this set-up anymore. I don't want embroidery anymore. I like the results but it is too much hassle for me. What would my options be? You can only trade up, right? And I want to go down. Does Bernina sell the new 590 Crystal edition without the embroidery module? I'd like to get to that machine or go back to the 570 with no embroidery. What would you do if you were me? Thanks for any advice.

Hi Cody, thanks so much for doing this series. It has been so informative and helpful! I currently have a 475. I have an interest in getting into thread painting. That being said, which machine or machines would you feel would be best suited for someone that is doing a fair amount of thread painting? ( I could consider trading in the 475 or keeping it in addition to another machine.) Your comment about the 475's 5.5 being great for smaller piecing vs the 9 makes a lot if sense. I hadn't thought of that before. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651
@sewingwithcodyandpete8651 2 жыл бұрын
I am so happy you enjoyed my video and found it helpful. So to answer your question about thread painting, my only question is how big of projects are you planning thread painting? I feel that all of the machines are very capable of thread painting but the size of the projects is what is going to hold you back in relation to the size of your machine. With thread painting you don't really need any fancy machine feature so in that case I would go to the first member of the 7 series. Depending on what machine is available at your local dealer at the time you decide to purchase you could see if they still have the 740 or you might have to go with the 735 which is replacing the 740. These two machine both have their pros and some cons just like with any machine. But for you the 740 (if still available) would complete your machine features if you keep your 475. The 740 has 9mm, dual feed and more space IF you add the BSR. But with thread painting you don't need BSR in my opinion. However the 735 also adds some nice features too, it gives you that big 7'' screen and the ability to add embroidery whenever you'd like if you ever want it. However if I would to go with the 735 i would get rid of my 475 because it's just a bigger version of the 475, (5.5 mm)... Why I would choose the 735 over the any model below it is because its larger and if you are looking to create projects that you are going to be moving all over the place (under the machine) the more space the better and you don't need anything else special feature wise. Going with a 5 series isn't going to give you much more space to do such compared to the 475. the 475 has a 7'' throat space and the 5 series has a 8.5" however the 7 series has a 10" throat. :) I hope this helps.

Hi Cody, great video again. Do I understand from your discussion regarding stitch plates that you can actually use a 5.5mm straight stitch plate on the 7series and, if so, is this any different to the 9mm straight stitch plate I already have for my 790? As you say, sometimes the 9mm machines, even with the single hole stitch plate, can suck in the material unless one uses a leader/ender. I’m really looking forward to your take on the 790 as I upgraded to this from the 770, which I agree is a fantastic machine, however, for various reasons the 790 has the edge for me, but, of course, costs serious money! 🥴

@yc70jade 2 жыл бұрын

You’re pure in a pickle. I would recommend the 770. But it is a toss up between the 770 and the 735. But on the other hand you can always use the walking foot with the 735 and you get excepting feeding but don’t have the versatility of the dual feed but exceptional feeding. If you haven’t used the BERNINA walking foot it is awesome and has 1/4” marking on it too.

My suggestion would be a previously loved or demo 535. It will give you the space to quilt more easily and you can always add the BSR later if you get into free motion quilting. Otherwise the 480 is your other option it’s just an inch shorter and it has a 9mm stitch width which I find nice for garments. But a new 535 is over the $2500 budget. Unless you catch it on sale which might be coming in June 😉
