Depending on thickness and hardness (oak) you will see hot spots and blade burn.
@bighands695 жыл бұрын
Daniel Balfour It is fine for the odd small ripping cut but with prolonged usage it will dull the blade. Also dense long cuts you can have issues with a cross cutting blade. Also if you are doing fine woodworking you will notice small problems here and there which means it may not be considered fine woodworking.

wow, i am using a mitre saw nowadays to build my raised beds and i have noticed that the blade leaves a lot of ripping that i have to file out. Darn, I didnt even know there are different type of blades existing, I thought a mitre saw blade is just a mitre saw blade... It probably sounds ridiculous for many, but this is how some really beginners think :-) I cant thank you enough for this video! :-D

@bighands695 жыл бұрын
Emma T Mitre saws are for cross cutting. I today will still call them a cross cut saw while everybody else calls them a mitre saw. If you are using a mitre saw there is a chance that it has some generic cheap blade in it. So that can mean it might not be a genuine cross cutting blade. Have a look at a genuine cross cut blade from the likes of Freud/diable which are not that expensive but offer amazing quality for the price.

Sometimes I have to cut hardwoods like Purple Heart. The thing that confuses me is that when I look at the back of the saw blade packaging, there is a table that has a range of no. of teeth vs type of materials. For example the table says the 10" x24T rip blade is not the best to cut hardwood vs a 10" x 60T saw blade is better. With seeing this on the blade packaging I bought the latter. So now you are saying its best to use a 24T blade to make a cut on any wood type hardwood or soft wood. I am now even more confused. I understand that using a higher teeth blade is best for crosscutting and the low teeth blade is best for ripping and removing more material along the length of the board. What is the best blade to use for ripping hardwoods?
@jaakkolehto14872 жыл бұрын
rip hardwoods with 24t blade rip softwoods with 24 or 40t blade crosscut all woods with 60 to 90 tooth blade you can use a general purpose or combination blade if you dont want to change blades
@tonyharris50157 жыл бұрын
Thanks for another great video Colin. One thing you didn't show was using a cross cut blade for ripping. If a ripping gullet cleans out the long fibers, how does not having one affect your cuts?
@knecht1057 жыл бұрын
Yes, just not enough time to show everything, I actually did rip a shorter piece with a crosscut blade and it works fine, nice clean edges, it just works slower
@dirkvercauteren18767 жыл бұрын
There is a general ( fist)roole for number of teeth an thickness of wood. While ripcutting we need to have about 2 to 3 teeth cutting in the (solid) wood. This means the thicker the wood the less teeth on the sawblade. This can also be calculated but i think this will lead us to far. Cross cut sawblades have to much teeth for ripping purpose (exept for "weak" wood thickness - see above). Every teeth needs power to cut in the wood, a high number of teeth needs much more power. A wood working tool needs "food", in this case wood. If the teeth only takes a small amounth of wood this will build up heat due to execed friction. Certainly you have allready seen heat marks on the wood. A crosscut blade used for ripping wil need much faster resharpening. Best regards

Full kerf blades DO NOT Outlast narrow kerf blades. Yes, they have 25% bigger teeth (25% wider) but they're also cutting more wood in the form of an exactly 25% wider kerf.

I always cringe when i hear americans speak of measurements in inches or any other measurement from the imperial system for that matter. 3/32inch??? 1/4th of an inch, 1/15 of an inch, 1 inch and 2/3's,... Like why? xD 1mm, 5mm, 20mm, 1000mm,... 10mm is 1 cm, 100cm is 1m, 1km is 1000m,..... On the contrary the imperial system is so weird and confusing. If NASA does realize this and doesnt use it, i don't get why not all americans stop using such an inferior system of measurements. Anyway, great vid nonetheless! :)

Diablo blades are not cheap, but certainly not the most costly and produce a great cut for a reasonable price. I have Diablos on my circular saw, 10" table saw and 12" miter saw. They are at a price point where I wonder whether they are worth having them professionally sharpened or is it better to just replace them? How many sharpenings should one expect from a full curf blade compared to a thin curf blade?

@brucema5659 Жыл бұрын
I think one thing that is important to note is that if you rip with a cross cut blade you tends to burn the wood because of the heat build up. That’s why everyone are using the combo blade so you don’t need to keep changing blades. I tends to burn hardwood on rip cut, even though I always try to keep the blade clean. You just reminded me that maybe I should change to a ripping blade for rip cuts.

@danceanddreams14 жыл бұрын
you show the difference between crosscut and ripping blade, ok. BUT: you make the same mistake that is seen on many ww channels keeping the blade too low. the teeth an kerv has to petrude full above the wood to erase dust and fibers easily. otherwise you get burnmarks. see 10:35 , even with your good blades in 3/4 material. This mistake make so many because they see it on nearly every channel. the reason for that is a safety feeling because you see just the tip of the blade and to keep the sawdust down in the saw. but if the blade is too low the fibers will be forced through the cut and burn. and before anyone comment this, please try out. regards from cologne

Why not use a cross cut blade for everything? What am I missing?
@sizif7175 жыл бұрын
The cross cut can't take out the chips of large pieces of wood so fast and effectively. And in many industrial applications - people don't really need smooth cuts. Especially if they don't cross cut.
@bakedbeings5 жыл бұрын
You have to feed the wood slowly when ripping with a crosscut because it can’t remove the chips/fibres as quickly. The slower feed = more time in contact with blade, sometimes resulting in burning the wood.

Not shure this "knob" is a kickback protection. Often this is a protection (rejector) for the next teeth. It reduces the possibility, while cutting, knots are hurting / damadging the next teeth. In fact this "knob" is a little lower than the teeth. The knot is pushed away from the following teeth. Not always 100% guaranteed but in general this works fine. When sharpening this kind of blades the differance in hight between teeth and rejector must be respected. Always follow, in this matter, the specifications from the manufacturer of your sawblades. Best regards.

Felipe Forlin It depends on the level of finish you have. Fine woodworking would need that level of detail but not commercial joinery. Some people will just have a universal blade others will require ripping, others cross cut and some will need all of the above.
