I love the realness of your videos man! None of this picture perfect stylized and staged videos here. Loving that it's all about the soil fertility, the food and the family. More power to you, just awesome! 👍 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 😁

Yes, too many gardening programs are not realistic. We don't all have beautiful walled gardens with hundreds of pounds worth of lovely raised beds and invisible gardeners who are probably doing all the work! Most of us are short of time and or money and Monty's style of make do and mend is much more relevant.

The reason some people say you can apply compost any time of the year is because they are not bothered about nutrient leaching. The nutrients become available to plants through biological processes in the soil thanks to the compost as a mulch not a fertiliser. If I had a 'rough' compost in Autumn and needed my compost bay to start a new heap I would spread it and sow a cover crop on it if I wasn't going to sow/plant something to overwinter.

I’ve always worried about planting into my aged woodchips for fear of nutrient leaching, but this gives me hope that I don’t have to sieve for 8 hours

Cover crops a great way of protecting the garden over winter, there are some no diggers that discourage their use but I've found them really useful

Always enjoy watching how u prepare the soil. Makes alot of sense. This year I added alot of homemade compost to my soil. So hoping it will help my crops grow better this year. I had to level my beds up they where new last year and some part dipped down further then others

Thank you for this informative video Monty. I wondered how to best deal with bindeeed. I took on an allotment plot last year and its been really persistent. Other allotment holders recommend putting down weed killer but I'm not for that as I dont want poisons anywhere near me nor the soil I'm working with. Do you or anyone else here have any suggestions please? Many thanks.
@fordtelly6573
@fordtelly6573 Жыл бұрын
Charles Dowding covers this on his channel. Worth a search on there. Smother them with layers of cardboard or plastic tarpaulin etc to weaken and kill most. Some will persist but he says that as soon as you see it pull it out and gradually over time it will weaken the plant and die off. Another method I've heard of if you do end up using weedkiller, is to train the bindweed up a stick. Then when you have enough growth, bundle it into a freezer bag. Then spray weedkiller into the bag and tie the bag up to close and then wait. You are then only killing the bindweed and not the rest of your garden.

Can I use black weed membrane to cover or do I have to get some cardboard?
@catherinematthews9573

Hi - clueless new gardener here yet again. I'm following your month by month videos and in autumn I put cardboard over my raised beds (and followed your advice on planting garlic which is growing). I'd assumed I was supposed to take the cardboard up when it was time to plant but now I'm guessing I just put soil on top. So I have two, probably stupid, questions. When I come to plant things like carrots directly into the beds how do I get through the cardboard which has only broken down a little bit. Secondly I've only had a compost bin for a year and initially I didn't know what I was doing so I haven't yet got brilliant crumbly compost. Thanks again for all the advice and tips.

for most things soil over the top will be good enough, the gardboard will break down quicker when it's covered, things like carrots are better planted in really lose sandy soils, i grow them in raised container to avoid crrot fly - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpDPZoZmjb19bZI

Cut slits in the cardboard where you want to sow carrots, add some bought sieved compost (and some sand if you want), sow your carrot seed, make sure the compost doesn't dry out, cover to make sure birds don't throw your line of compost everywhere. Some people put a piece of wood over the row to reduce evaporation but shouldnt be a problem till Summer depending on your climate.
