Earlier this year I had the driver shaft shortened from 45.25" to 44.5". Fitter added a little glue to the inside of the head to increase head mass (so the swing weight was same as the longer driver). I hit the driver much more solidly now, find more fairways and there is no noticeable loss of distance.

I love the idea of a go to Club. I tried a shorter shaft on my driver and yeah, I could control it a little better but then I got to thinking if I’m on a hole that I really need control my three wood is money so I returned the driver to 45 inch shaft. Now it definitely isn’t as controllable but on longer par fives and I have a little breathing room. I’ll bring out the big dog to hunt and do my best to make a swing.

I just placed my 3 wood shaft on my driver head and started hitting ball straighter and longer, I recommend to those that struggling with driver shaft length.

Hi, I refere to the last testerman sad, very seldom he did a 47inch skaft fitting on someones new driver! I see myself exactly like that 47"golfer.!!! Im a retired PGA teacher, age 84, this week June 6. Have three drivers, and four diffr shafts on those clubs. Callaway FX, shafts, 47 and 44 3/4, Cobra 47 in 10 degr, Cobra 47 in 12degr loft. They all work fine, daily form doesnt matter, can hit all 90% on fairw! So Im not compl, just always want more distanse all the time! Have great time use two drivers on cource all the time, testning, recom that for all players, test and see! Johnny D Bergh PGA Prof, retired

I hacked 3” of an old driver I had. Added lead tape to hosel side of the driver head and on the bottom, way at the back. It works just fine!

Sergio garcia plays with a 43, Tiger and Fowler 43 1/2. I recon the big manufacturers know shorter is better but want us to have trouble with the driver so they can sell us a new 'game changer' every 6 month.

It has a lot to do with the big movement for distance. A longer shaft will help you hit the ball further, but a shorter shaft is easier to control and hit straight.

@@2ndswing. Cant argue with Physics, the longer the lever the further it will go if you catch the COG sweetspot. Non sweetspot with long lever shots are not as long as sweetspot short lever, and the average golfer will hit this sweety more often. Tom Wishon explains it alot better than I.

Club manufactures just want to sell clubs, so they lengthen it to say it goes further.

When you say “45 inches”, is that just the shaft? Does it include the head? What about the hozzle adjustment piece? How do you define length?

In my personal experience, my optimum driver shaft length is 45" any shorter or longer and I struggle to find the driver sweet spot and end up losing distance and accuracy.

I totally agree. Once you've solved the issu of consistence, speed is the solution. Hence, it's more profitable to take 10 hours with a good teacher in order to improve its score rather than buying the marvelous new $700 driver every two year.
