thank you i find this to be very helpful. since hearing this flute im in love with the way it sounds. the thing is i dont play any instruments at all and know almost nothing about playing or reading music lol. but this instrument inspires me. im debating to get a short xiao..... but not sure and i might end up getting a small native american flute which sound very similar. im looking at the dizi too , and the dizi is nice but the xiao sound is more airy and deeper and more sexy.

don't get a SHORT one, those are HARDER to play! If you want to start, go for a dizi that is mid size, like a C or D, and then buy the beginner blowhole-helper thingy on aliexpress. That makes you able to at least play a note right away. F or G is written on the xiao beside the hole, it's very clear. You can buy online and they often label the F or G key on the description.

Doesn't xiao just mean small in chinese?

I depends on the tone. Small in chinese is 小 (xiǎo), which is in third (falling-rising) tone. Xiao flute on the other hand is written with the character 簫 (xiāo) which has the same pronuciation as 小 but is in first (level) tone rather than third.
